Barcelona: Charged with corruption .... again!

This goes to show to people that say that players like Messi and Ronaldo at this stage of their career limit their team's performance because the team's strategy is still focused on them but in truth, they are the players that cover the cracks of the team and make them look alive while scrapping results.

This Barcelona without Messi to cover their flaws is just a mid-table team.

Koeman is tragic, but... two years ago Pique was basically saying the same thing Koeman is saying now and was even saying he will be "the first to leave". then he changed his mind and simply said he doesn't actually see himself ever leaving because he cares only for Barca  of course both him and Sergi will be on players side, as they represent the other part of cancer - old, spent and overpaid players that overstayed but will never consider walking away from the massive contracts they're on. they know what the fans want to hear but in reality, everyone will be gone before those two cockroaches. they already lost Suarez and Messi + Griez, and De Jong and couple of others will probably leave before Pique and Sergi do. attack is the best defence, obviously.
Pique is the reason they're even able to play Memphis, he slashed his wages in half for them. At every point during this crisis he was the first to put the club's financial needs ahead of his, and the others only followed his lead. He even brought them the Rakuten sponsorship ffs

His love for the club and commitment to them is the one thing that can't come into question

Their appointments post-Pep are definitely up there with ours post-SAF. Luis Enrique aside, I guess.

It also says quite a bit that he is the manager installed by these clubs that spend billions. Why don’t they give it too other managers? Because they feel Pep is the best. Yeah he might of spend piles of money at City but he racks up 100 point seasons and clears up domestically
Exactly. If Pep had come here and spent as much as we have done, we'd have a lot more to show for it. So many other managers at so many different clubs have had chances to spend big and still not produced a team half as good as pretty much every team Pep has built. You are not only guaranteed success by giving Pep money, but excellent football, too, which, as we've seen first hand with van Gaal, Mourinho and Ole, isn't as easy as it's made out to be.

Koeman sent off

Memphis missed 3 good chances.

De Jong was decent pre red card. Araujo and Ter Stegen good. All their other players were garbage. Dest and De Jong were the worst off the bunch.

Luuk de Jong has always been a garbage striker. He is only there because the manager is Dutch. They literally could have gotten anyone better than him.

I know the manager hasn’t had much to spend and I have sympathy in that respect but bringing in Dutch players while their national team is really low in quality in comparison to past eras was a bizarre decision.

If they sack him and bring in Martínez they’ll have the same problem. He is no better as a manager than Koeman.

Dest was always a bad combo too. Ajax tax + American soccer star = hype train!

No one even rated Dest besides Ajax fans. Koeman spent 20m on Ajax's backup RB.

I think he's destined to become Barsa president before too long.

Definitely just papering over the cracks. From a financial perspective there is possibly an argument that Messi/Ronaldo limited Barca and Juve financially to be able to invest properly but given the way both clubs have wasted wages and transfer fees it's hardly a good reason either.

he already owns a club, not sure if he would have to relinquish that to be president of Barcelona

Are there any sites or resources to read about their youth players? I see on Twitter all these references to their new crop of teenagers and I haven't really heard that much about them except for Pedri (who is brilliant).

Wonder which of their mates the new board will appoint. Barca have appointed nothing but average managers post Pep. Sure Luis Enrique played nice football, but he's achieved nothing before or since and let's be honest, my infant son would make a team with Neymar, Messi and Suarez look decent.

I'm not questioning his love for Barca. I'm aware he took the biggest cut among the players. after all, all of their highest earners accepted the wage cut, even Griez in the end. Sergi will also be given a cut in his new contract. even Koeman took a wage cut so no one is saying they don't care for the club, vast majority of them obviously care enough.

what I'm questioning is whether the members of the old guard can still back it up on the pitch instead simply popping with words of "wisdom" here and there before another humiliation. they will continue to say the right things like always, that's never been the issue. I just don't think they can do more than that these days. after all, taking a cut ≠ having a good game. those aren't even my words, plenty on Barca forums wanted them gone or retired whenever I bothered to check their forums. they're getting absolutely slaughtered there.

the truth is, Koeman said nothing wrong. he said the aim is always to win games and titles, but due to them being broke and all the injuries, expectations should sometimes be more realistic as it's not really a regular season at Barca. vaaaast majority of us here on caf, Barca fans, pundits, members of the board, even the players think the same and will agree with that regardless of who their manager is. Koeman is the ugly truth here while Sergi, when he says their rivals aren't better than Barca is simply a pleasant lie, nothing more. in life, we prefer to hear more of Sergi than what Koeman is saying, I get that, but it's just a cheap shot from a nothing player who is aware his manager is getting sacked, is an easy target so he can afford to be loud now.

I mean, the guy openly cried in front of everyone two weeks ago because the crowd slaughtered him. they're way past the point where loving the club means something as it's rarely seen on the pitch these days.

Busquets, Piqué and S. Roberto do not even give the level to be substitutes in this team, Alba does but distributing minutes with Baldé.

In my opinion the valid players for the next few years are these:

Defensa - A. Baldé at left back, fast, strong and technical. Great potential with only 17 years.
Araujo, a beast physically. Fast, powerful, imposing in the aerial game, difficult to dribble in the 1vs1. Top Player. 22yo.
The rest of CB are expendable. In Barcelona b we will have to see the evolution of Mingo Ramos.
At right back Mingueza have the physical and technical capacity to be a valid player both as a right back and as a centre-back. Too impetuous and that makes him make mistakes.
Dest, great disappointment so far. In a year he has not improved anything, he even plays worse than when he arrived.

Mid - Here it is very easy. De Jong, Pedri , Gavi and Nico, the rest of the players depend on their performance.

Attack - Fati if he recovers well is top player. Memphis, Dembele, Agüero they are good players but not top. Demir still needs to improve a lot.
Ilias Akomach is the great hope in Barcelona b but still 16 years old, left-footed winger who plays on the right.

Vilanova was doing very good from what I remember, but have never rated that much anyone after that. Think Luis Enrique benefited more than anything about the team he inherited and their front 3 at the time but he was still decent enough for them, quite a lot more competente than their last appointments. Tata Martino was also remarkably bad.

Would he drag them down to look merely decent? I still reckon those three in a ten man side would look outrageous. I suppose someone would have to look after the infant on the pitch, so effectively playing with 9 men. Yeah OK, I guess that might make them look merely decent.

You win this one KirkDuyt, if that is in fact your real name. But don't imagine this is the end of it.

“Luuk de Jong feasts on crosses into the box.”

It’s almost a struggle to believe a commentator would say such a thing in a Barcelona match unless it were in reference to the opposition.

nah, he came because after last minute griezmann transfer, the options were limited in quantity and quality, and from those level b (or c, or d...) strikers he could choose de jong who, at least, he knew him... we weren't going to get anything better at that point.

i think you are being to optimist...
i think araujo, mingueza, pedri and fati (if the injury doesn't affect him too much) are very solid plays and top players (by top player i mean a player that can be consistent in a top team 11, not that they are world stars). de jong is not so young anymore.
then nico, gavi and balde look good... but there are big question marks there (i could include demir here). at this point, it is more plausible that they are "betis like" meat. we will see. potential "ricky puigs", who is getting lost completely....

the rest are to me to far to be even considered as a 1st team player. they could get there for sure... but...

i don't think we will have a decent squad in AT LEAST 2-3 years. and that is best case scenario. we are not in position (from a financial and a competitive perspective) to sign any top class player. it will depend on getting the "salzburgo haaland" and the talent developed in house.

Years and years of smugness, I'm enjoying the post-Messi mess just as much as I expected.

this is actually extremely hilarious coming from a united fan...

i have nothing against united... but i guess many people think that after years and years of smugness, they are still enjoying post SAF mess... and it's been a decade. i hope you dont enjoy barça mess so long ;)

Yes agreed

I thought the big issue is that they can't afford to sack him? It's more money down the drain...

Koeman knows that everyone in the Barca hierarchy wants him gone.

You'd hope a club legend who is so obviously out of his depth would do the decent thing and resign. But who would want to voluntarily forgo a nice salary?

You mean.... like half the squad that refuses to do this? Why should he? They are all on wages they wouldn't get anywhere else in Europe at least.

I said what happens to Barca if they fall out of the group stage and don't get 4th in the league. At the time, I felt it was unlikely but a possibility. However, if this continues much longer it becomes more and more possible.

Delightful.

Messi has been keeping them relevant for years.

This is basically their SAF retiring moment and they have nowhere to hide.

Did they really have zero shots on target?

Yes and no... we managed to fail twice without goalkeeper. One of them was going to be a goal but a defender stopped it. I don't know why UEFA doesn't count it as a shot on target.
We had 4-5 very clear chances but, as usual, we just missed them. All of them with 1-0 in the scoreboard (Benfica scored in minute 2).

The only objective is making it to the top4.
Making to the knock-out stage is a secondary objective for the year, not very relevant.
