So I was in the Entertainment Forum and I noticed a sticky thread started by Geebs a couple of years ago asking posters to post songs. All of the items are modern day rock. So it got me to thinking. There's a whole lot of music out there that isn't rock caftards! I would like to post a You Tube video every few days or so of pieces other than rock and explain why this particular piece of music is special. The music would include classical, swing, the older standards, do wop, older rock, in other words, just about anything that has not been covered in the present music threads. I am a classically trained pianist and, in all modesty have a vast knowledge of music (;) I would like to share and maybe, just maybe, broaden your horizons and let you listen to something you would not ordinarily hear. After each video is posted, I would like to hear your take on the selection. The first entry is a sexy one: “Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss”, a great song by Mel Carter, a unique talent. It was the last of its kind: after 1965 Jimi Hendrix etc. came on the scene. This piece evokes everything that a woman wants to hear from a man. It's a real panty dropper. Note the bolded lyrics.

"Hold me, hold me
Never let me go until you've told me, told me
What I want to know and then just hold me, hold me
Make me tell you I'm in love with you
Thrill me (thrill me), thrill me (thrill me)
Walk me down the lane where shadows
will be (will be) will be (will be)
Hiding lovers just the same as we'll be, we'll be
When you make me tell you I love you
They told me "Be sensible with your new love"
"Don't be fooled, thinking this is the last you'll find"
But they never stood in the dark with you, love
When you take me in your arms
and drive me slowly out of my mind
Kiss me (kiss me), kiss me (kiss me)
And when you do, I'll know that you
will miss me (miss me), miss me (miss me)
If we ever say "Adieu", so kiss me, kiss me
Make me tell you I'm in love with you
(Kiss me) kiss me, (kiss me) kiss me
When you do, I'll know that you will
miss me (miss me), miss me (miss me)
If we ever say "Adieu" so kiss me, kiss me
Make me tell you I'm in love with you
(Hold me, thrill me)
(Never, never, never let me go)"

U2 and Gloria Estafan covered this but not as well IMO.

Now someone help me and imbed the video. Thanks

Two of the best
I LOVE Nina Simone in particular...

Country music seems to get a bad rep on here and in general these days but when done properly it is quite beautiful as can be seen by Laura Cantrell one of the favourites of John Peel.

This brilliant song was recently used in an advert for the Dolce & Gabbana Light Blue Advert. I can't seem to get hold of the original on YouTube but the above clip is the original song with a guy playing a mandolin over it.

It seems I haven't read the opening post thoroughly enough. I blame that in part on Barbara's incompetence regarding embedding making half the post gibberish ;)

I'm not a musician nor do I possess a vast knowledge of music but i thought it was beautiful and it inspired me to check out more music from the 50/60's. As you can see from my music I've taken a liking to Sam Cooke and I would greatly appreciate recommendations towards similar music.

Let me explain this once again. We are talking about one video. This is not a video posting thread! Thanks for your contributions. BTW, BB King was one of the greats. A real old-fashioned blues man.

IMO Country music's bad rep stems from the huge amount of mysoginistic
whisky soaked wife beating bull that's peddled. I can think of very few male C&W artists outside of Johnny Cash who I'd credit with any artistic merit. Female C&W is often painfully beatiful though in its chronicling of genuinely hard lives and beauty found through struggle.

One of my personal favourites:

She'd always courted controversy and her hard life was well documented not least in the brilliant "Coal Miner's Daughter" but the shear beauty of this particular song and the heartfelt mourning she feels for her dead husband of 48 years in spite of the fact he was an alcoholic, abusive philanderer who married her at the age of 14 truly moves me.

For those not familiar with it the guitarist with her on this one is Jack White of the White Stripes who co-wrote her comeback album Van Lear Rose which vears from poignant country ballads to seriously upbeat country rock tracks like Portland, Oregon. A brilliant album on every track which proves that country music can be relevant and showcases the fantastic voice as well as incredible beauty of the 69 year old legend. Really looking forward to her follow up album with White later this year.

PS: I've cleared up some of the trash that shouldn't have been in here Babs, good thread and definitely not in need of any Jamie Foxx and the likes.

My respect to Jack White just increased. I never knew he even like country!
He's always cited Loretta Lynn as a key influence including dedicating "White Blood Cells" to her but many music journos dismissed it as a piss take even though they'd performed covers of Lynn's controversial record "Rated X". They ate their words with the release of Van Lear Rose.

On topic: I did read the original post and love the Mel Carter song. However I've always found the hysterical screaming at live performances hideous. So personally i'd take a studio recording of the song.

On Country: Really like some of Loretta Lynn's music but that song "god makes no mistakes" is just plain ugly. Dolly Parton - before she became a cartoon - made some of the all time great country music. The Little Sparrow album is as good as anything in the genre.

On off topic self indulgence: As everyone is doing it, here is 2 that I like.

Couldn't find Tom Paxton's definitive version but Seegar does a good job anyway:

No. On the side topic, country music has some funny songs. One of my favourites is "All My Exs are in Texas". There will be a country music entry later in this series. I'm not telling you what it is at this time.

Definitely not how Barbara intended this thread to go!

I'm sorry Barbara. Its still fixable if people stop posting videos.

Yes, I deleted my post as it was just youtube videos.
I don't understand why this post is a sticky though and I would suggest that she edit her first post to make it bit less of a mess.

And when have U2 covered Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me? They did a song called Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me but it's not a cover nor is it remotely similar.

I will look forward to this thread when it gets going.

Are you stressed? Having a bad day? Or life? You cannot assemble a flat pack. Maybe your misses started one of those arguments. Your boss hates you. You have no friends. You have not been shagged since the Crimean War. Or perhaps you have explored your masculine side, your feminine side, your metro sexual side, your unconventional side, and now you want to explore your spiritual side. Friends, I have the answer to your problems. In a word, Mozart. One of the great geniuses of all time. Catagorized in the Classical Period of musical composition, along with Beethoven and, to some extent Haydn. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Had a hard, poverty-stricken sad life and died very young. In spite of all of this, he was able to compose some of the most glorious, uplifting music ever written. Without further ado, I present a choral work of his, Ave Verum Corpus, conducted by the late American conductor and composer, Leonard Bernstein. Sit back, close your eyes, take deep breaths, blot out everything from you mind, and reeeeelaaaax.

Now someone upload this for me! Thanks

Woops, sorry Barbara. I think it's just the blurb to do with the youtube link that made me miss the main point of this thread.

When you have the link.

Copy the bold part of the link. If you then "go advanced" for your post, and click on the youtube button it will bring up

A beautiful piece. But i could only just sit listen to this for so long before i got bored, in all honesty. I personally would rather listen to Vivaldi and Chopin ahead of Mozart, if i had to choose what to listen to for a period of time.

But as background music for relaxing then Mozart is the obvious choice as it just seems to make you feel at ease.

Wow that post does sound a tad gay.

Ah. Xander gets the point. Thank you for your opinion.

I suspect more people would get the point if you could edit the original post using the very simple instructions a couple of people have posted and make it more readable.:p

Either way, good idea for a thread.

That Mozart piece is the only one of his I have on my ipod. I agree with Xander. I'd rather listen to someone like Chopin if I'm going to sit down and listen to the music properly.

It'd probably make relaxing background music while you're reading but otherwise it'd put me to sleep.

On that note, I used to try and listen to Chopin while I studied and it was impossible. It got distracting because it was so catchy.

PS: I've cleared up some of the trash that shouldn't have been in here Babs, good thread and definitely not in need of any Jamie Foxx and the likes.

Why not just bin all the posts in this thread? It'd help put it on track.
