Backup LB

I can't believe that are still sad that Fabio is gone

He had 4-5 amazing weeks at the end of the 2010-2011 season........in the rest of his MUFC days he was average and most of the time injured

If he wouldn't be Rafael's twin then people would talk about him like they talk about Büttner

He undoubtedly showed potential. Much more than Buttner or Smalling have ever showed at FB - two diabolical back ups.

We're also forgetting we have only one first team right back at the club, no? I have a horrible feeling Valencia will be used there a lot next year. Ugh.

A full back who can cover both left and right I suppose is ideal.

Barcelona's Adriano is experienced and can cover both left and right back, but he's 29 and probably not for sale. Losing Evra is a disappointment.

Think we should go for Blind. Can play as a LB or in midfield and has a good engine in him. Also only 24 so imo a much much better buy than Vermaelen

It isn't Smalling's fault that he must play there.......we all know he isn't a full-back. Carrick would be shit on the right wing too.

We've too many average players in our squad....Fabio was one of them

I'm not knocking Smalling's talent as a CB, he'd be fantastic if he played there consistently. He's shit at RB though, and he must lose confidence having to play somewhere where all his ball-playing deficiencies are exposed, which does affect his performances at CB IMO. Fabio's showed that he could play at a good level for us in the past, I think most of the frustration with him isn't that he's a world beater we let go but that we didn't give him a chance and preferred Smalling at RB (to his detriment) and Butter at LB (who could not claim to be any better than him).

Of course Fabio was a better option at right-back than Jones/Smalling and at LB than Büttner.

Still we're needing better back-ups than Fabio or Büttner in this positions......someone like Adriano

Hilariously we already have one in our book. His name is Marnick Vermijl.
I'm excited to see what van Gaal does with him. I'm not sure how he did at NEC but I'm sure van Gaal must have seen him play a few times. Was a very consistent performer in the reserves and as you say can play right or left. He even started off as a winger so could do a job there but we seem to have enough numbers there already. Reece James has been very good too and I think he is even better in CM. I think Reece could be be used a bit like Blind.

Santon maybe? Plays mostly on the left despite being right-footed so definitely capable of playing on both sides. Would probably not cost much. Clyne aswell but Southampton would be reluctant to sell. Kurzawa seems like an exciting lad, he's my backup for Shaw on my FM save :)

Convert Fletcher to right back and have Raf as left back cover.

Weren't we linked to a young Bosnian guy too a few months ago.

Sead Kolašinac? Apparently we'd made an offer for him back then but no news since.. Guess we moved on

Vermaelen would be a good backup option, and also I'm sure we have a buy back option on Fabio if needed and would bring him back if we aren't getting anyone else.

So many saying Vermaelen but he is even worse at LB than he is at CB. Vertonghen is the one that plays LB still better.

Plus Vermaelen is so injury prone and once you start shifting around isn't able to cope.

Hopefully not a big signing, either someone cheap and either at the start or nearer the end of their career. Or give some of our reserves a chance.
Or just bring back Denis Irwin

Giggs could have prob being back up for a year :)

I'm still pissed Moyes sold Fabio, Fergie seemed to rate Fabio the better of the Da Silva's hence him starting in a Champions League final at right-back even though Rafael was fit and is the more natural right-back.

He just didn't develop as much. Barely shined for QPR.

Hopefully it's someone who will be relatively cheap and accepting of a squad role.

In all honesty, I can't see anyone performing better in that designated role than Evra while maintaining harmony and allowing us to prioritise other needs in the squad. We've been extensively linked with Rodriguez lately, but he isn't worth the outlay now that we've signed Shaw. It should be one or the other otherwise we really won't get the best out of one or either with both.

Ideally we would sign Blind who is unlikely to cost more than £15M. He can cover a number of positions, is tactically flexible and he is a consistent and solid performer if not spectacular. If not, Kolasinac could be a good addition, would cost less than Blind and has plenty of room for improvement at 21.
