Back up to Pogba?!

There's not many players around like Pogba, and it's clear we miss him when he doesnt play. Any team would!

To me, we need someone similar to step in when injured/rested.

My question is, who is out there who could bring a similar game to Pogba?

Someone who has the following attributes:

Good passing range
Vision
Keeps ball under pressure
Strong
Drives with the ball

Who's out there?

Andreas Pereira - Let's bring him back in January. I see him more of a replacement to Herrera. I am not convinced we will be very active in Jan. I think we will wait for the summer. I'd like to get Fosu & Pereira but as midfielders. Not RB, CB or winger. Both can be top midfielders. - We will need new players but I think we should wait untill summer to recruit.

Ross Barkley?

A sort of CM/AM hybrid wouldn't be the worst idea. Might look at Banega, Kovacic, Jonathan Viera, Pastore, Pjanic.

Seri is also a talented passer/creator/ball carrier (albeit a little deeper in his positioning).

Pogba's absence is the reason + non availability of fellaini as well. Herrera is badly out of form. We definitely need to bring in reinforcements in January otherwise our season could go down the hill. Initially I was quite confident about our squad depth, but not so much anymore with the number of injuries we have had. We need a CM 100% in January.

Call back Pereira or sneaky bid for Wilshere.

No matter who the player though, it’s the system/tactics that are the issue. We sit too deep as a team and don’t pass the ball quick enough.

Best post I have read in a while, you are exactly right. Messi and Ronaldo wouldnt be half the players they are if they played here. They would probably be told to play hoofball up to Messi to hold it up, while Ronaldo made it up from LB/RB.

I'll start by saying that City won with two lucky goals, that Pogba would have made a difference, and that Mourinho is doing a great job. I'm even of the belief that Lukaku's chance at the end came from one of the 2 best moves of the match... unfortunately, it hit the keeper in the face.

So is that the shopping list?
Savic (£?)
Goretzka (free)
Ozil (free)
Greizmann (€100)
+ a wingback/fullback

Yes, City did win with two lucky goals. But the issue lies in the fact that we place so much responsibility in Pogba which shouldn't be the case. We can't just rely on De Gea to save us with a 1-0 lead like we had against Bournemouth and we cannot expect Pogba to always bale us out. Pogba could have his off days as well but we need a quality signing to not make us suck when he isn't playing. We lost the game in midfield despite City scoring lucky goals.

As for my players to bring in for the summer.
Savic (65m) would be high on my list
Goretzka (free) seems like he's Bayern bound
Weigl (35m) + Mhiki. Instead of Goretzka, he would be our rotation for Matic and our Carrick replacement
Ozil (free)
Griezmann (85m) whose seems to be Barca bound
Guedes (40m) whose actually been a terrific right winger for Valencia this season.

So 65 + 35 + 40 = 140m

Ronaldo had his best goal scoring record under Mourinho??? He scored 168 goals in 3 years, better than any other 3 year period in his career.

Lazio midfielder Savic should be a good option to pick up.

I watched him closely since United linked with him and I have to say he is really impressive. He is tall and strong, physically suits Premier League already. I can see why Mourinho interests on him. Upgraded version of Fellaini and the midfield trio Pogba-Savic-Matic would be super powerful.

A little short on guile/creativity, no?

Real Madrid and Barcelona were also playing 3 midfielders. Pogba provides creativity and attacking drills. Savic provides box to box ability. Matic provides stability. It might not as skillful as Kroos/Modric/Iniesta, but it would be a dream trio for Mourinho and Premier League. Especially against top teams.

Obviously we are talking about the solution if Pogba not playing, then it would be Matic-Savic and Savic also got the attacking abilities. He loves to enter the opposite box.

That was Real Madrid. How many world class players was he playing with in a 2 horse race? Im talking about an average Utd side, whose main attacking option is hoofball.

I'd love Loftus-Cheek.
yet again I think Andreas Pereirra could grow into that position if he stayed and build up his confidence here.
If i have to fork out big money move, Weigl, Dahoud or this guy:

Jankto is like Pogba, but less finesse.. he likes to shield the ball, tall, quick and have a good shot in him.

Angel Gomes could become one, but still too early.

This.

No matter who we bring in, the style of football won’t change. So doesn’t matter.

We used to be a team that could compete on all fronts with 4 different striker options that were all fantastic, that's what I want to see in midfield as well. I like what we have at CB, we've got 4 or 5 players of a similar quality all fighting for the same position. That is how I want to see our CM situation too. This should be the quality of depth we should aim to have, teams like Bayern Munich have gone strength to strength having so many options in CM. When a player with the quality of Thiago Alcântara is injured, their team doesn't fall apart.

With that in mind - Weigl is the player we need to do everything we can to sign. He's a player that can compete to play alongside Pogba and Matić or even put Matić under threat should we persist with a 2-man midfield. He'd be a long-term option in our midfield. And that is exactly the type of quality we should be aiming for. If we as a club aim to sign average players like Wilshere/Barkley then we'll just have to expect mediocrity every time a key player of ours is injured like right now. Weigl is the type of player that can run an entire midfield on his own, he was doing that under Tuchel in a Regista role - think Pirlo. He's a player that can close players down quickly, retain possession and unlock teammates with his excellent passing range. We've seen what the team is like without Pogba, but I don't think we also want to experience our team falling apart without Matić and lose that solidity, Weigl in big games partnering Matić would also allow Pogba to play much more advanced and link up closer to Lukaku. Also wouldn't hurt having another player in the team that can make penetrating passes.

From what I've heard, Savic isn't a great passer, he is good at breaking up the play though. Furthermore we need creativity, so I don't think we should sign Savic unless he really is THAT good and one of those players you'd sign even if you were very good in that position and had lots of depth there.

I think on the shopping list of players we should sign are:

- Goretzka (don't know too much about him but he sounds good, seems to have lots of good attributes).
- Özil (class player, Mourinho would know how to get the best out of him if he signed him).
- Griezmann (personally I think he is a very good player but a bit overrated, never in the top 5 players in the world let alone 3, nevertheless he is used to playing in a pragmatic system).
- Alex Sandro (unless Luke Shaw can become a regular by seasons end - hopefully he does prove to be worth the money).

Griezmann can play right wing correct? If so I can see us potentially lining up like this next season:

4-2-3-1 -

De Gea

Valencia Bailly Rojo Sandro/Shaw

Pogba Matic

Griezmann Özil Martial

Lukaku

or 3-4-1-2

De Gea

Bailly Lindelöf Rojo

Valencia Pogba Matic Young/Shaw/Sandro

Özil

Martial Griezmann

or 4-3-3:

De Gea

Valencia Bailly Rojo Sandro/Shaw

Matic
Goretzka Pogba

Griezmann Martial
Lukaku

Griez can play on right but it’s definitely not his best position. He was mainly played as striker or second striker on Atletico. I would buy a specialist right winger who can cross rather than buy a £90m striker but he might needs to play out of his fav position.
