I know laporte is better on the ball but IIRC Giménez was considered the best young pure defensive talent on the planet a few years ago.
I would love to see us sell Rojo and buy Giménez, give him the #5 shirt. He's a great header of the ball and compliments Bailly who is nothing special when it comes to aerial duals.He has even admitted that he dreams of playing in the Premier League

He is potentially very good. Just not sure City are the club to go to improve as they don't exactly concentrate on defending. I am furious with him. The players pleaded with him to stay and he did and has now dropped them in the shit. They have a kid at CB and another kid trying to get his fitness back after cancer and a backup. Nunez and Yeray are both relatively short as well. Laporte was the height in that defence.

Bilbao are on a really good unbeaten run in the league after a dodgy start. His form has really picked up and he is looking back to his best again after a bad injury.

Gimenez has regressed quite a lot.
Laporte is a much better version of John Stones. Class defender and I hate that he is going to City. Wanted last summer to go for him instead of Lindeloff and the summer before that to get him instead of Bailly.
He is a really good defender and can come out of defence with the ball and can pass the ball. He potentially is the one who can fix that defence and that is worrying. I wanted him here as well, but we have done it on the cheap. It might work for us, but we have to get DDG signed otherwise the defence will be shown up badly. He has saved their skins a few times.
Also weren't City looking at Inigo Martinez, maybe he has regressed a bit as well? Yes Bilbao now get a load of money but their options to spend it are limited and we now need another CB.
If he's not better than Koscielny than he's not worth whatever the amount City are paying for him.
I think it is more Deschamp is an idiot. Funny enough he nearly got a cap a few month back. Koscielny got a head injury and it looked like he was coming off and Laporte was ready to come on. Koscielny stayed on and the chance was gone. Spain were sniffing round on the residency rule, but now he is leaving Spain that chance might have gone as well. He could be moving to make himself more high profile. He is a cracking defender.
While I find it very weird that suddenly City are paying Laporte's huge release clause and the price just seems too much, I don't think this kind of logic should be applied in such cases. Fernandinho wasn't a Brazil international when City signed him for about 35m, so everyone went nuts, yet it was probably City's best business in those years. And Brazil's midfield are options are something else to France's options are in pretty much any area.

He costs us much as Bailly and Lindelof combined, but he is better than both of them. He would also be a perfect partner for Jones, Bailly or Smalling. We had money to go for him instead of Lindelof (to be fair, I rate the Swede too).
The problem with City is that he suits them perfectly. He is a left footed but much better Stones, and he complements Otamendi perfectly. It is what they exactly need.
There are other defenders right there who are good and we can get like Gimenez, but there aren't many ball playing defenders. And now City has two best ball playing CBs in the world. Wankers.

City would lose something in an attacking sense as I'd imagine one of Silva/Sane would drop out for a defender if they made a change to 3-4-3
I don't see it myself - he didn't play that way at Barca or Bayern in my memory- unless he'd be looking to be more solid in the latter stages of the CL

We already have one older attacker in Aguero who will cost a fortune to replace in a few years time. Replacing Sanchez would have been just as difficult!
You are the second person, who's missing the point. His injury set him back, which is why he couldn't force himself into France's squad. Deschamps, as @DomesticTadpole put it, can be a bit thick when it comes to selecting the best players. Koscielny isn't that bad either and you can't just have young defenders in front of Lloris. Varane, Umtiti, Kimpembe, Zouma, Laporte, Lenglet, Upamecano, Lucas Hernandez, etc. Their options are insane there and all fairly young, too. He's one of their best players there, despite the competition.
I'm sure he'll be playing for you for free after being greeted by Niall Quinn at Manchester Airport.
