Avatar - Welcome to the future of cinema!

I agree. Have been interested in seeing what this is like but that trailer was very underwhelming. How exactly is it a leap forward in cinema?

I couldn't wait to see the trailer as i had heard about this movie for a long time, but i have no word to describe such a thing.

Leap forward in cinema ? fecking hope not. Cinema isn't just about visual effects.

to be honest, it could be in 5D for all I care, if the story or the acting are shit then it's not worth it...when will people realize that SFX can only go so far without a fecking story..Script >>>> Everything else

The trailer looks pants btw

I thought the trailer looked pretty impressive, watch it in 1080p.

Obviously the novelty of watching a movie in HD will quickly wear off if the plot is a bit shit.

Its going to be shown in 3D.

The first blockbuster to be designed specifically for 3D. I'll be very interested to see what Cameron can come up with, his past movies have all been very good, hell even Titanic gets brilliant when the ship starts sinking.

Pure escapism, should be an interesting watch.

Pah, I remember watching Jaws 3-D at the cinema.

What Mockney said. Script>>>>>Gimmicks

Deffo.

But if you can combine the two and make it work, then great.

On the face of it, its doesn’t look my type of thing, but i will be interested to see what its like.

They were saying on BBC news last night that the cinemas need a digital projector which cost about £80k - only 320 out of 3,600 UK cinemas already have them. So i cant see it being shown at many independent cinemas.

I think there will be a pretty large upgrade in most cinemas. This should be a very big hit across the globe, it'll come alive in 3d. I trust the director of Terminator1/2 and Aliens to come good on this. The only problem with Cameron is the dialogue at times can be a little... crap. The story's are normally very good.

Personally i'll be going down to London and dragging my Sister to watch it at the BFI IMAX.

Watched the trailer for this yesterday, looks a bit rubbish. There's nothing there drawing me in. I'm sure it'll look stunning in the cinema, but as others have said, that's useless without a good film behind it. Then again, it's only a teaser, so it's only real intention is to look pretty and get your interest. Also, what the hell is up with the blue alien things??? They look shit.

EDIT: Just to say, I do expect this film to be decent, it's James Cameron afterall. Just very underwhelmed at this point.

On a related note, is anybody else just not at all fussed by the thought of 3D cinema in general? Every so often Hollywood tries it again, and I really couldn't give a shit. And it's not even a case of I want them to focus on story instead, theres plenty of time to get both elements right. It's an attempt to make the cinema visit an experience again, but the last thing I want from new films is more reason for the audience to talk throughout the fecking thing. Also, paying £2 extra? No chance.

Hahaha! I knew it! When I saw that crap trailer all I could think about is that the man-creature is going to fall in love with the woman-creature. And they did, even the trailers now-a-days sucks and is totally predictable. It was inevitable, I'm so bored of this Hollywood mainstream crap, it's just the same shit in a different wrapping.

I'm rating this film from a gut-feeling, good graphics but crap story. Everything is gently placed on a blanket of CGI and it's more dedicated to show that more than the actually story, that had somewhat potential, but decided to ruin it to make more people go see it. Need some lovin' so the girls will see it. 3/10. I was not amused.

I'm officially boycotting this film and will never eat my words.

Errr, thats two aliens kissing at the end....usualy a hollywood story would have a human kissing the alien

I dunno. I think it looks like it might be fun.

As far as big, dumb Sci Fi extravaganzas goes it could be the best in a long, long time. Don't forget this isn't being put together by George Lucas or Michael fecking Bay. In James Cameron we trust.

I also reckon that blue alien bird is gonna turn out to be the most arousing non-human film character since Jessica Rabbit.

Right so from that trailer i get this.

Disabled guy is, i assume, some great soldier who got injured in combat. A problem breaks out on a strange planet and they go to help. But he needs a new body and with this alien they capture/he volunteers they use some crazy science to make him be able to use the body. With new body he goes to save the planet leading to him falling in love with alien girl and the audience weeping with joy at the pure cgi fest that is before us.

I'm not buying it, future of cinema my arse.

I'm sure Cameron and the film industry will be rocked to their core by your one man 'boycott'.

Looks like it might be an entertaining movie, but it was never going to be as revolutionary as Cameron was hyping it as.

Looks like it will be an interesting movie, at the least a decent night out at the cinema.

Is it based on a book or a game or something?

I think this film was doomed to underwhelm the moment some people started hailing it as "the future of cinema". I'm sure it'll be a very good sci-fi action movie, particularly with James "Aliens" Cameron at the helm, but there's no way it's going to revolutionise the whole experience.

To a plot degree I agree, but I think the big thing is going to be the full 3-D experience.

We'll just have to wait and see

Absolutely.

Although for anyone to have an informed opinion about whether or not it is the future of cinema they'll have to watch it... well... in a cinema. A lot of the buzz around it is the quality of the image and the projector, rather than any content of the movie itself.

I don't see why everyones being so picky about it, it's just the trailer so far, and it doesn't exactly look bad. It's not like we know the entire plot or anything, and it's James Cameron!

The design looks really impressive. Have no idea about plot but it looks like Pocahontas meets Flash Gordon from the teaser. Hopefully the script is more original than that and it matches the visuals.

I certainly want to go and see it at the cinema, and I haven't been to the cinema for years.

Yeah I quite liked the trailer, and the graphics looked excellent.

Agreed.

What's wrong with the trailer? How on earth have so many people formed an opinion from 3minutes of screen time? I thought it looked quite interesting to be honest, could be a good film. Certainly there was a lot of potential for a great film in that trailer, but it's really too hard to tell from that though.

Should be very interesting. Looking forward to it. The man made Terminator, that's enough for me. :)

Can you imagine, though, if it were brilliant. What would you do? Eventually cinemas would stop showing it, and then you'd be fecked. A modern television surely couldn't replicate the 3d effect when it comes out on Bluray?

I've seen the trailer online a couple of times and was not particularly impressed. Then I saw it today on Sky, and it certainly looks better in HD. But it was prefaced by one of those movie channel trailers that cuts together lots of clips of classic movies, and it is going to have to really go some before it gets me as excited as some of the things on there. I hope it is going to be good - but it reminds me of the Binks, and not in a good way. Maybe its the oversized blue alien thing or just the overuse of CGI generally. With the exception of a very few characters (Gollum, Woody, Donkey spring to mind) - creating CGI 'actors' that genuinely inspire an emotional response seems to still be beyond filmakers.

Still - it is James Cameron, so it will be worth a look.
