Film Avatar: The Way of Water

iMax Sydney still hasn't reopened after 6+ years of redevelopment. Still a few months off apparently but then again they have been saying that since 2020.
I saw Interstellar in that when I was there 7 or 8 years ago. Accidentally got seats at the front right instead of the back left and it was a huge mistake. The screen is ginormous and I was straining my neck to see all but the bottom right corner.

The seats were far too close to the screen. They tore the whole thing down and the new one will be the largest iMax screen in the world. Hopefully the seats will be further away this time.

And they just closed the whole shopping centre at Darling Harbour, shops, restaurants and bars, the whole lot. They are going to demolish and redevelop.

Damn. That’s taking away the notoriety of my local IMAX.

Yours looks much better, mind. Kinda like a funky W Hotel.

Be alright though if you’re getting a hand job, so long as the rhythm is right.
too graphic/rude?

I saw it at HOYTS cinema in entertainment quarter. Was really impressed with the cinema - electric reclining seats etc.

Sounds good. I might try to watch it there even if it is a little bit of a hike from my Inner West comfort zone.

I walked past it today on the way to/from work. It looks nearly finished.

Ok, cool. I’ve an 11 nearly 12 daughter as well. Might target my recruitment on her instead!
Has she / they seen the first one? Try them with that. My two both loved the first one and both loved the second and want to go and see it again already! A real spectacle of cinema.

Yeah, they both enjoyed the first one. Only problem is my son is 13 going on 18 and thinks this is a “kids film”. Reckon it will be an easier sell to herself.

Happy to seemingly go against the grain here, thought this was fantastic.

I maintain that no film needs to go over three hours (and I'm stunned that Babylon's runtime exceeds it as well by the way) and parts of the middle section could have been condensed without affecting the film overall.

But I thought the story was developed really well, the ending sets it up perfectly (obviously can say no more without spoilering) and it goes without saying visually breathtaking.

It's at least the equal of the first film and I'd recommend to all.

I guess that's why we love films and the fact that they're so subjective!

It's actually pretty violent mate

Thinking about it, you’re not actually going against the grain. The opinions in the thread from everyone who’s actually seen it seem to all (or nearly all) be positive. All the negative stuff is either sharing (British) movie critics opinions or from people who haven’t seen it yet.

Not a fan of 3D. Is this recommended to watch in 2D? Don’t think 2D is an option in imax annoyingly.

Saw it a few days ago and yeah it's good. Thought the first one was a bit better but not by much. I'm worried they're going to milk the crap out of it now though and the quality almost always suffers. I mean, part two has just been released but part five is already confirmed..

It was surprisingly enjoyable. It's gonna get crapped on by cynics cos of its naivety and cheesiness, which it has in spades in fairness, but it's genuinely enjoyable. It's amazingly well made, the world building is excellent, and it didn't feel that long - though it could be trimmed in places.

Also, anyone who enjoyed Top Gun earlier this year and dares say anything about the scenario or script here is a hypocrite.

Word for word I would have written this.

My additions : Yes, the odd (huge) section in the middle is gratuitous and does nothing really… but it’s still properly enjoyable.

The whole thing is 3+ hours of fun. Yes it was bloated, but it was never ugly and laborious.

It’s a really fun movie, and better than 70-80% of marvel movies that people consume with dicks in their hands.

I’m old. It was enjoyable. Kids will absolutely love it. Looking forward to the next few.

I think that's a great point and I thought a similar thing when watching it, Marvel films do get a free ride from a lot of people.

In the last year I've sat through Thor L&T and Morbius which were all sorts of awful and some other rubbish like Amsterdam and Uncharted which went under the radar because of their cast.

Black Adam (appreciate that's DC) and Black Panther WF were streets better than the Marvel films above but I would genuinely say this latest Avatar film is better than both of them.

Glad you enjoyed it for me it was absolutely the opposite. But I agree with you that this could've been a great 80's movie with a running time of 89 minutes.

Neither Thor or Morbius got any kind of free ride though.... absolutely trashed. Because they were shite. Actually most recent Marvels get trashed now.

Well we all have our opinions, we may agree on Avatar. Black Adam is one of the worst movies I’ve seen….

Watched it last night. The 3D is great, the CGI is fantastic and I enjoyed the experience. It is, once again, a Cowboys and Indians story at its heart but so is Star Wars. I just don't know why it has taken Cameron 13 years to make a sequel. If he plans to make another few of them, how long will it take?

How dare you! Avatar is the only blockbuster with a simplistic story don't you know?

Am going at 7pm. Full IMAX/3D experience. On my own (wife thinks this makes me a weirdo). Have packed a wee bag with cinema snacks, a tasty drink and a potent edible. Christmas has come early in this house :D
Initially my interest was piqued wondering why you need a wee bag. 3 hours too long for your bladder?

Then my curiosity was subsequently dwarfed by my wondering what a potent edible is? I mean, I know what MY version of a potent edible is but … you know, people are weird!

Sounds great to be honest, enjoy yourself tripping out over those gorgeous visuals!
