Film Avatar: The Way of Water

I wish Hollywood would spend its money on making more dinosaur films. There aren't enough dinosaur films.
 
I saw the original in the cinema and the 3D blew me away. The film itself is average though. With a good story it could have been great.
 
As an overall film it was average to poor. But it was full of scenes that were genuinely jaw dropping to watch at the time. Way more so than any action/comic book movie of recent years. And a collection of jaw dropping scenes is basically all you want from a blockbuster. Although that might have been because it was all new to us and our palettes are far too jaded for something similar to work again.

Yeah, I always seen it as like a demo to show what could be done with CGI and in 3d, was it HDR too? I remember it seeming ridiculously colourful compared to everything else.

I think the 2nd will have a bit more substance story wise, but not have the visual wow factor of the first for the reasons you mention. It'll still be beautiful, but won't be anything we haven't seen before.

Yeah there's not going to be a massive leap from what we've seen before but Cameron has been striving for more realism in the sequels. He didn't want the shitty underwater effects as in Aquaman so he's been spending years developing equipment that will make the underwater scenes look as if they really are underwater. The facial movements will be more realistic too capturing more detail in the facial expressions and speech etc.

People watching will probably just take it for granted but not realise the lengths he went to to get results he wanted on screen.

The first one was great fun if nothing but a standard colonisers vs noble indigenous people parable with great effects.

The second one could be more of the same, take brain out and enjoy the action. Or a total clusterfeck. We shall see.

Can't be worse than a Marvel film though.

Nah, he'll still do them as it's his vision, his pet project, so to speak. He's been working on this for over 30 years. He'll be starting on some elements way before then. It's the post production that takes all the time.

I also read an article where Cameron said 2 and 3 needed to do well at the box office for 4 and 5 to get made. I guess the risk is that they are so expensive to make that they need to do really well to even earn the costs back.
 
I reckon this one will do well Box office wise, as its been almost 15 years since the first. However if it will be shit (which is likely considering the first story was bad), and the 3rd is due to be out only two years later, I reckon the 3rd wont perform anywhere near as well

Ah fair enough. I guess it all depends on what he means by 'doing well' then. As I said before if other franchises like Mission Impossible, Pirates, Fast & Furious, Transformers etc. can still rake in the shekels, I can't see any reason why Avatar won't.
 
I'm extremely disappointed that a forum search reveals that EdgyCafe isn't actually a thing.

Edit: Unlike Libcafe, which has a proud history. Though that only goes back to 2017, which is also surprising. Marxcafe only goes back to the end of 2020.

Given our appetite for brainless cgi entertainment you would think they should do well enough for 4 and 5 to get made. Of course 3 and 4 could be rubbish and/or tastes have moved on to all superheros all the time.

The thing with Avatar was that it was visually unlike anything seen before in terms of filming, CGI, 3D, etc. They had to literally invent the camera they used to film it.

These days, CGI has moved on a lot, and is used so much more and has advanced greatly, so is Avatar 2 actually going to be any better? It'll be visually stunning, yes, but will it be "never seen before" levels of stunning like the first one?

Yeah, exactly. Wasn’t the first avatar the first time we got to see 3D in full colour? That was mind blowing.

As I said before the "never seen before" stuff will be the realism of the underwater sequences and the improved facial motion capture that he's spent all this time perfecting. Whether viewers will fully appreciate it or it just go over their heads remains to be seen. It certainly won't be looking anything like Aquaman, that's for sure.
