Australian Rules Football, season 2013

Buddy was a bit of a mess this year, we often looked better without him. I know Sydney have a good philosophy but I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up doing a Fevola and losing the plot.

Going to miss Guerra, he had the best rug I've ever seen! Be interesting to see who we pick up, we've got a bit of room in the salary cap now.

Truthfully I was at peace with the prospect of him leaving a year ago. As soon as he decided to postpone negotiations at the start of the season I knew he'd be off... And I couldn't blame him as it seemed like GWS would be offering a once in a lifetime deal.

Unfortunately it was the other Sydney side though. But if he wants to leave Melbourne then fair enough. He will never become that certified Hawthorn legend though, which is a real shame.

He has been much more of a peripheral figure these last two seasons anyway, although he will always take the best defender regardless of form which is a loss.

As for the cap room - next season a better lot of players will be available, so I think we will be making a big play fit someone next season.

A new ruckman I daresay. Although I don't think we're in for Mumford.

Buddy has said he's gone to Sydney for more premierships but to be honest they looked spent as a squad this year, five matches against us and the Cats ended in five losses, a few of which were heavy.

I think we should still look for another defender, Lake is old, and Schoenmakers and Stratton are too slight to really hold a defence together. Gibson is superb though.

Mumford has gone to GWS. We picked up Big Boy Ben Ben McEvoy from St Kilda in a trade that came out if nowhere. We traded Savage (shame to lose him but fair enough he wanted guaranteed game-time) and a first round pick.

So that is our Ruck situation sorted for a fair while yet.

Franklin said that because it's the cliche thing to say. If he really wanted more premierships as the sole deciding factor why would you leave the team that just won one a few days prior? But they are obviously much more likely to compete than GWS for a few years yet.

Lake/Gibson are simply brilliant defenders, and Birchall is the best running backman in the league. Stratton is a 3rd tall or small defender, but I disagree on Schoey - he was looking great at Centre Half Back up until his injury. I expect he will come back into the side and Gibson will move to the 3rd tall position which he is made for.

How Gibson hasn't made the All Australian team at all in any of the last three seasons is a joke. But being Hawthorn's best and fairest in a premiership winning season makes up for it.

Oh yeah forgot about McEvoy. He was a good pick up.

Schoenmakers can be great but he's not consistent and is also coming back from a major injury. And is slight. I'm not sure how long we'll have Lake for. Running backman has never been a problem position for us, it's always been the big physical presence. As brilliant as Gibson is, he's a little short. Savage suffered from the fact we have a number of players identical to him, so it was the right move.
