Australian Open 2014

Expecting Murray to disappoint. I don't believe he is fully fit and unless he is 100% he has no chance against Nadal or Djokovic. Hopefully I'm wrong and he brings Scotland another Slam. Djokovic will win it I reckon.

Bye bye girls :(

Robson...3.0
Flipkens .6.6

Watson....,,,.5.6.3
Hantuchova .6.3.6

So Murray is again the only british player in the single draws after just 3 hours of the tournament  .........we have Wimbledon and have only one good (Murray is amazing) player :(

Djokovic has got an easy draw here. Can see him winning this. Murray won't win. He would have to beat Federer, Nadal and Djokovic. It isn't going to happen

Rafa has a pretty tricky first round. :nervous:

Especially considering that he is usually piss poor in the first week of slams.

Nadal's camp complaining about the speed of the courts. Oh the irony.

Tomic always seems to look very talented in the slams. Could be very tricky for Nadal.

Why do the Aussies not like Tomic?

Hewitt's been hanging in there but this is a boring match.

Who are the good up and coming players in men's tennis?

In short, there aren't any. On the main tour, at least. Generally, the junior Slams means absolutely nothing - see Gasquet - and the players that were meant to promise so much - Dimitrov, Raonic Tomic and Harrison - continue to loiter around struggling to make an impact.

I don't think the increased focus on physicality helps, but it isn't that much of an excuse. Just a lack of talent and application. Tomic, for example, is now 21. Nadal won his first Slam at 19. Novak was in his first Slam final and at No.3 in the world at 20. Andy was in his first Slam and at No.4 aged 21. A massive gulf in class.

Janowicz looks the best bet to me, but he isn't even young in tennis terms.

Yer Janowicz and Dimitrov seem to be the only ones even worse showing an interest in. Gonna be funny that after this real golden age it looks very likely there will be a real slump, people like Del Potro would have won much more in any recent era bar this one and looks like the next one too.

No way Delpo would have won a Grand Slam in the nineties. In my opinion...

Anyway, yeh... tennis level has failed us. Not enough constant quality to fight up there with Rafa and Nole.

For the future, i hope Christian Garín can do good. He is 17yo and currently 386 in the atp ranking. I guess this year we will know if he is good enough or just one more average player. (probably Argentina and Spain has a young army of young players coming through...)

Beautiful to watch Murray absolutely batter players in the early rounds, like watching your football team smash the smaller clubs 5-0. Don't think he'll be fit enough to win this though after his long injury.

Millet proper pumped, Murray's gotta regroup in the fourth and calm the match down a bit. Should still be fine.

Murray does this though - will give away a set - make his opponent all excited and break him first up in the 4th set. Don't see a problem

Yeah hopefully that break signals the end of Murray's lull even if he does lose the this set.

Well that fourth set would have been over and dusted in about 10 minutes. G, S and match Murray, played OK, really raised his level at 5-1 down in the 3rd and won 23 consecutive points.

The general depth in the mens game is fantastic. As for Del Potro, I'm not old enough to remember the tennis in the early 90's, but the fast courts would have suited his game well. I see no reason why he couldn't have won a Slam. His win at the '09 US was brilliant. 3 players, 5 if you include Federer and a pumped up Potro, and that's more than enough to argue that there is "constant quality" at the top of the mens game.

Good win for Andy today! A quarter final would be a good tournament, all things considered.

First match of Rafa i watched so far this Australian Open. Playing great. 6-1,6-2,6-3 victory over Monfils.

Aye, looked very good. Not had the easiest draw either but got a bit lucky with Tomic puling out. Who does he play next?

Pity about Del Potro going out.

Man, if Federer wins a slam this year, I'll just frickin' lose it.

I still think he can, but he probably needs to work his way into the top 4 and get an easier draw and THEN play a great 3 final matches.

He's left himself with too many big guns to beat this time.

Yeah I am hoping for one too. Then the head says, "look a this Australian Open. He needs to beat Tsonga-Murray-Nadal-Djokovic to win" :(
Hope his ranking improves by the time Wimbledon come along and he gets draw where he only needs to face at max 2 out of Murray-Nadal-Djokovic.

Andy looked good today. Next round should be a walkover. A quarter final or further would be a great way to return.

I'm glad Serena's out. She was beginning to annoy me like when Federer couldn't stop winning grand slams

There aren't any coming through with the combination of talent and mental strength. The top 3 will still be winning Slams into their 30's. Nobody can touch them.
