Australian Football League - Season 2014

He’s the best I’ve seen by a margin, granted I’m only 27.

20+ votes in the Brownlow 8 years running

8 time All-Australian

5 consecutive Players’ player of the season (was it?)

2 Brownlow Medals, which should really be 4 (this season and ’10, when Judd wasn’t rightfully suspended for his elbow on Pavlich – ‘not enough force’ in the contact, yet Pavlich required 6 stitches? He was the media darling and got away with anything… I still remember him eye-gouging Campbell Brown yet Brown was the one who copped the media backlash for daring to get his eyes in the way of Judd’s hand!)

Older generations will tell you his dad, Leigh Matthews (900+ goals as a midfielder/small forward) and Wayne Carey are the holy trinity… But Ablett Jnr has at least set himself in with this lot.

I think over the next few seasons as his career starts winding down he will make the transition to a small-forward, and will still average 20+ touches a game and 3 goals… No doubt in my mind he will hit those numbers.

Dunstall was better than Ablett snr and jr is definitely better than his old man. Which isn't a dig at the old man.

If I'm going to have a dig at him I'd call him a creepy, abusive, God bothering cnut.

Carey is the greatest player I have seen but Ablett jr is without a doubt the best mid.

Ablett jr should have at least 5 browlows. (2008, 2009, 2010, 2012 and 2013)

I'm going tomorrow... Nerves haven't kicked in just yet, though I dare-say I won't be eating anything tomorrow.

Watching at home. Hopefully I can get to sleep. Obviously staying up for the United game that night too. Hopefully it is a good day/night on both fronts. Please beat Sydney. Cannot stand them. If it is close I am not sure how i'll cope. Don't want a repeat of 2012. Refuse to watch a second of that match ever again. I never will.

Hawthorn tearing the Swans a new arse hole in the first half.

Wonderful footy from them.

Also Ted Richards looks like Vidic.

Unbelievable performance. It was a privilege to bear witness to the rich flogging that was handed out on Sat, it was a simply stunning performance.

Hodge taking out the Norm Smith Medal just caps off the fairytale day - though Lewis and Mitchell can count themselves unlucky.

Langford, the son of a legend, is FAST becoming a legend in his own right. When he kicked that impossible goal I lost my mind.

Great win, well deserved. The Swans were shit.

Sadly the crowd was horrendous. I heard numerous dipshits making monkey sounds booing Goodes. Embarrassing.

Heard the booing but no monkey noises, that's shocking if true.

feck me I'm still walking on air... Going to watch the replay another couple of times tonight... What a farqing perfect day.

I've watched the replay about 5 times already. Loved it.

I've watched the replay about 5 times already. Loved it.

Same with me mate.

I got the DVD with the alternate commentaries yesterday and cannot wait to watch the game again with the three other commentaries this weekend.

I watched a replay of AFL 360's review, and 'On the Couch' (or should I say Swan the Couch)..... It just made for beautiful viewing.

Never have I seen a team pull out such a performance when it mattered the most, against the much fancied side.

What an amazing day. Really, every single thing went to plan:

- Hodge dominates in his 250th, receiving his 2nd Normie (3rd ever player to win two - Gary 'Conan' Ayres and Andrew McLeod being the other two)
- Mitchell, Lewis getting off the leash and destroying Sydney's much vaunted bigger bodied midfield in emphatic fashion
- the legendary name Langford once again dominating in a GF, feck me if he didn't announce himself as a genuine up-and-coming superstar of the competition in front of 100k people, plus the millions watching
- Buddy finally realising what he has left behind. He was sitting on the team bus by himself for 30 minutes post-match, before anyone else got on there according to the media... No doubt it's hit home fully and horribly... I will always love him though
- Clarkson cementing his place as a certified legendary coach, and the best since Matthews
- the team being ridiculously aggressive and scaring Sydney. We got into their heads and did not relent. I haven't seen such a quality side be so rattled for a whole game... There were so many poor poor decisions made, and skill errors from them due to our pressure
- tackles on Hannefairy by Roughie, Hale, Breust... And Hodge just barging him over when Hannefairy tried to tackle him (to be fair I do love Hannebery when he's not playing the Hawks)
- winning ALL four quarters of the match
- not letting up and letting Syndey gain any momentum throughout the match, they kicked consecutive goals only twice throughout the game. Every time they challenged we responded, every time they had a run of possession we slowed it down and soaked it up
- the crowd chanting 'BACK TO BACK, BACK TO BACK' all throughout the last quarter... Amazing... Simply amazing
- producing a performance that I will NEVER get bored of watching. So emphatic, so brilliant

Farq me I could wax lyrical for hours... I feel for my missus who has had to cop the brunt of it.

On a side note, FFS I hope people reamed Tom Waterhouse with his ludicrous $4 odds for us, I hope he's paying through his teeth.

Did anyone see the huge poster released with all the players celebrating? Did anyone notice there was no Hodge in the picture (how the hell they could release a version without the captain is ridiculous.

This is why he wasn't in it:

You can even see the players posing for the picture on the right hand side.

I've seen that around various places, class act from Hodge.

He's going to be a fecking superb player for Hawthorn, Chip. Mercurial player when he's on song.

Yep, pleased with Frawley. Probably means Spangher goes out but Chip is the superior player so all good. The Ryder to Port deal is sort of dragging on, hopefully he stays. Port will be a threat next year regardless but Ryder would strengthen them significantly.

I think Frawley is exactly what we need but his reported salary is a bit much.

Did anyone see Herittier Lumumba's speech at Collingwood best and fairest. He is a fecking dipshit of the highest order and clearly as dumb as a post.

I read a bit of what he said, and it just sounded like a normal farewell speech, with a slightly odd digression about how the club helped him realise the 'true meaning of his name.'

What did I miss?

I laughed a lot. Then I cringed. Then I just felt embarrassed. Horrific. He spouts nonsense.

A quick google-about yielded this:

“Now, in 2014, we find ourselves in a very interesting time, not only for the football club, but (for) this whole world.

“The landscape is changing and I know that if the Collingwood Football Club is to go to the next level ... it must stand on the right side of history.

“One thing I have learnt on my journey is that ... I know what side of history I stand on.”

Yes, a bit cryptic and wanky.

The bit about his name was just weird. I think I remember something about him "having the last laugh" or something.

What side of history do they stand on in America? They usually do the opposite to us, so I'm assuming left?

Crazy times... Sounds like the Doggies are about to oust McCartney over this Griffin fiasco.

Whilst I don't agree with CoLA I think the fact the AFL have done this now, in the middle of trade week, is a bit of a joke.

Sydney should have been given prior warning, though something tells me they may have had a big deal lined up (Ryder?) and the AFL were fearing the backlash if they pulled it off.

Having said this - this is good news for us Hawthorn supporters.

Who's going to watch the international rules match on Saturday from Perth. Channel 7 will show it.

Same time as AU away to CCM. No Chance

Havent even kept up to date with the squad, who is in?

My bad, it was the replay thats on the same time.

I'll probably watch it. Although I like watching Adelaide play in the A-league so maybe I will flick between, the Mariners are dull anyway. It's a strong squad. I don't really care though, just as long as Hodge, Mitchell, Breust and Birchall do not get injured I don't care what happens.

Basil fecking Zempilas is doing commentary. Is Dennis Cometti there? I fecking hope so.

One-sided contest. Amazing to see a team of so much talent.
