Looking forward to this. Sharapova not playing?

Can't see anyone out of the top 4 men winning it really.

Tennis has changed so much since the start of the open era when it was all about the US and Australia. In another 5 or 10 years they'll both be off the map entirely. It's getting like club football with Europe top dogs, South Americans next, and the rest nowhere.

oh right. Her ranking must have plummeted eh?

Not sure how far she fell but she is still ranked at number nine in the WTA Rankings.

Must have played decently at times, in between winning this last year and then shutting it down after the injury.

Hate to say it, but I think Andy Murray has a chance. Nadal's conditioning doesn't seem as good as last year, and Federer is on the wane, it seems. I'd love to see Roger win it, but I think it may end up being one of Djokovic/Murray that does it.

In the women's, I'd expect on the Williams sisters to pick up enough form to do it-whether they can be arsed is the question really.

Murray seems to be on form at the moment and would be good to see him win a slam tournament but Federer always seems to start the year in good form and I'll tip him to win. Ivanovic for the womens.

I hate to say it myself, but if I put money on anyone it would be Murray he has been great of late and the payoff would be the highest. Still would love to see RF win it though

Not that they can't be arsed, but more of will they mentally self-destruction at the first sight of things not going their way.

As a Brit I dont think I can stomach Murray winning, it was bad enough with the whole media wanking over Tim 'No mark' Henman every year. Im Murray wins then we'll have this same shite all over again. He's basically the John Terry of Tennis.

Its bad enough that he's abit of an arrogant cock really.

Why would you 'hate' to say it?

Because I don't like the lad's attitude, as I've said in the past. And because I would find it hard to stomach the British media/summer tennis fans' wankathon over him if he did it.

He's becoming a better player than I thought he would, but that's not to say there's not plenty of players I'd like to see win it ahead of him.

Nah, it's the pre-tournament preparation that does for them, time and time again, IMO. I've heard a stat, although I don't know if it's true, that they are numbers 1 and 2 respectively in terms of % of match points saved. I think once they are out there in the right frame of mind, they tend to have a better chance than most.

How long do you give him at the top of his powers, Brophs?

Seems inevitable that the injuries, especially the knees, will cause a big drop in certain aspects of his play some time in the future unfortunately. Especially his movement around the court and the power he can generate from different angles. He is still only 22 of course, but other players in the past have racked up the titles in a reasonably short span, before 'burning out'.

That's a good point, Keyser. He has a style of movement that's very hard on the joints, and that's not even taking into account the way he bludgeons the ball. Looking at him this year, I think he's not 100%, fitness-wise. Yet. I expect him to get a bit of rhythm going, and the more matches he plays, and wins, the sharper he'll get.

But, yeah, I'm not convinced he'll have the sort of longevity that other players on the circuit might do. Because his game is so reliant on the physicality of both his movement, and shot-making, it's likely that if he isn't fully-fit, his results may suffer. I still reckon he'll do fantastically well over the next few years, but hard courts, like at the Aussie Open, may present a bit more of a challenge because of the impact on the joints.

But it's hard to know for certain. He's still very young, and his schedule is a little more punishing than it ought to be. I expect his team to have a look at that, and ration his time a bit more in the next season or two. That should help quite a bit.

I don't want Murray to win it because of his support of Anybody but England in the world cup. As an Englishman I now support anybody but Murray.

I love the hate for Murray, it makes me like him more.

The love for Federer on the other hand makes me rather nauseous. I have no end of respect for his talents and what he's done for the sport but before he was "the great Rodger" i think you'll find he was a bit of a "arrogant cock" himself. It's easy to be Mr nice guy when you win everything.

He's made snide comments in the past regarding Murray and has already shown his displeasure with the bookies for placing him as favourite.

When Murray was asked who he thought was favourite he answered "Umm... I think Federer wants to be favourite, so I'd probably give it to him."

Class, i hope Murray wins it just to stick it to everyone who hates him for being a genuinely world class player.

Yeah because Henman and co were ripping into him beforehand about Scotland not even making it to the world cup. Still with their laughter at his expense ringing in his ears he is asked who he wants to win and he answers "anyone but england" and the sun and co start the anti Murray movement amoungst the neanderthal english football fans.

Nice of the british news papers to show any sort of integrity regarding a player who at the time was 18? Yeah he deserves to have no support from english people despite being the only player in the UK who has won a match for Britain in the last few years.

Murray should just pull out of the davis cup actually...

I think I saw it on the news. I get good reception on the television in my cave. You are obviously quite emotionally involved with this subject judging by your neanderthal references but it doesn't take away the fact that he did publicly support England's opponents.

I don't care how old he was or what other people had said to him beforehand and I couldn't care less about the Davis cup. If I don't want to support Murray then I wont and if that makes me a Sun reading Neanderthal then "Ugh Ugh Ugh Grrr"

He didn't say you were a neanderthal, did he? It doesn't matter whether you support Murray or not but an understanding of your reasons why, since you are posting about it, is good for all of us. You have made it plain that you are not interested in why Murray has been portrayed as anti-English, which is fine.

Na it's just the papers who made it out to be more than it was, it was banter between him and Henman about a sport outside of tennis.

I wouldn't support england and i don't think every englishman on the planet would hate me for it because the fact is i am not english.

Anyway regardless many people don't like Murray, many scottish people can't stand him and that's nothing to do with his one of comment regarding england in a world cup.

I like the fact he shows some emotion and i like him as a player. Unfortunately because he is an exeptional player already the hype is huge and peoples praise, especially during matches (the commentators really wank over him) is a little hard to stumach, even for a fan like myself.

I think it was implied, hence my reply.

I thought the England comment would endear him to a lot of Scots.

I gathered you weren't English!

He is a good player and the press often seem to concentrate on his personality rather than his game.
I think the commentators get carried away because he is British and the same could often be said for Henman.
