having Lichtsteiner and Evra as full backs, who are hardly better or more productive than Irwin/Bergomi from the side.

That is a completely ridiculous claim. Evra was much better than Irwin going forward, its not even a competition.

On Lichsteiner and Bergomi, you have got to be joking again. Below is a Lichsteiner compilation with many overlaps, assists, crosses from as far up as the corner flag and even runs into the box.

Go ahead, show me at least 2 or 3 attacking moves from Bergomi and I'll agree with you.

At the end of the day there is much bigger gulf in quality in the individuals that would decide the game and their counterparts which is what I'm trying to elaborate.

I agree your team has much better personnel, no question about that. (Although I like the chemistry in team physio a lot more)

If it wasn't for Bergomi, I would definitely have voted for you.

Completely disagree. Evra has always been more frustrating for me to watch at United in attack, barring a season or two, let alone 33+ Evra at Juve. He has less assists and less goals than Irwin, despite playing in more dominant team and Irwin was 100% the better crosser than Evra for me from either side. Evra was way too inconsistent in his crossing and whilst he occupied attacking positions often enough the end product was no better than Irwin's.

As for Bergomi:

he scored some absolute belters from the right side and joined the attack often enough. In that video you can see him putting the ball in the net from the edge of the area with some unstoppable cannons.

There are hardly that many compilations on Bergomi available considering he's a full back and played in less highlighted era(will try to search for some).

If you want two examples, then here are from the highest stage in 82 WC:
Against the general run of play, Italy broke and won a corner on 75 minutes. Bruno Conti launched the kick left-footed into the box, where Bergomi knocked it down for Marco Tardelli to swing his left boot at it. The shot wasn’t going to trouble Peres…. except that Rossi was waiting on the six-yard line to redirect the ball past the hapless balding keeper. The lazy Junior had stayed back on his goal-line and played everyone onside. The goal clinched a hat-trick for Rossi, and it left Brazil staring at elimination.

esperate to claw their way back into the game, the Germans poured forward, but when Scirea stepped out and helped Rossi to rob Breitner, they were exposed on the counter-attack. Scirea came forward and combined well with Conti and Bergomi to the right of the German penalty area, before coolly laying a ball across the edge of the box for the oncoming Marco Tardelli.

As for Bergomi:

He is not the first defender to score belters. What I'd like to see is genuine wing play, overlaps, crosses, assists.

You hardly need your wing backs to score here with MVB and Eusebio up front.

You desperately need good wing play though.

In terms of chemistry Perfumo/Blanc and Scholes/Stielike both seem off for me but I guess that's only me then.

For Bergomi - he's not the sole provider on that side. We have 3 players able to stretch the play - him, Vidal, Eusebio. And I don't mean crosses only, Eusebio can pull defenders wide to open space for others - my tactics are not purely based to run to the byline and cross and repeat.

I'd definitely take a balanced but great full back (Thuram/Bergomi) ahead of someone like Lichsteiner who attacked the space for a dominant team.

Bergomi played mainly in an era that was watertight and very few full backs had the freedom to bomb forward on consistent basis. He's one of the most versatile defenders ever and if we are discounting the option that he might adapt to the modern (more adventurous style) game then we should simply stick with very rigid roles and formations when we consider players across decades.

I really don't see Physio's team to be set up to be watertight at the back with this personnel. Especially with a more static central core, considering the mobility of our forwards and midfielders. They will be buzzing all across that space and give them very little opportunity or margin for error. Eusebio, Vidal, Marco, scored some absolute belters from outside the box. So really is it the wing play that is vital in this game or the plan to contain that attacking unit with Physio's defence/midfield?

Because the plan is really sit deep and counter, which seems enough to handle two of the best strikers in history.

I havent watched enough of Perfumo to comment, but on Scholes/Steilike I agree and already commented above. But its adjustable by playing the younger version of Scholes in the Didi role.

On Bergomi, lets agree to disagree mate as clearly we can argue all night but will not agree with each other on the subject

Both are absolutely crucial. With Maldini and Bergmark there, who were both excellent defenders first and foremost, I think its not weak at all, especially for round 1 (although Perfumo is an Enigma to me)

but that is not the version on show here :) And even if we discount Perfumo, Blanc would have a torrid time with MvB/Eusebio. And I don't mean only in the air, as this is not the sole plan here.

He was complete striker with a fantastic game and could beat couple of defenders just with a drop of his shoulder.

Yeah, agree to disagree. Won't happen in this game, but will try to get back on that topic another day with a bit more video proof.

The Black Panther is having a rough deal here, so for those on the fence an excellent compilation of him weaving through compact defences and scoring from all over the pitch. His explosive nature is well suited along very busy midfield unit and a top notch playmaker in Rivera to provide the ammo.

Vote, people, this is how Brexit happened! :D

I think I have won given that Chilavert cost £30m and Peruzzi cost £20m. Is this correct at @2mufc0 ?

Well played Engima. I didn't think I would get through that. Your front two and Rivera were immense. I made an error with Perfumo. A more rugged partner to Blanc would have been better.
