Athletics World Championships 2019

Couldn't agree with you more. Compare and contrast London 2012. The crowds were big and the atmosphere was brilliant.
I hope that they learn for the WC.

Even the paralympics, with less "big names" had incredible support.

Absolutely shameful from the organizers. They could even have given tickets for free, invite school children, do whatever, get some people in there..

They've apparently invited the army into the crowd today to make it a bit fuller for TV and make some noise...

Not good seeing a virtually empty stadium. Doha has a population of 1.8 million.

Some people need to lose their jobs taking this extra dosh to stage it there.

Comparing it to the Olympics and quite possibly the greatest atmosphere ever seen in athletics or at least many decades is a little overkill.

Gemili through to the 200m final, dominated the race.

Was a great 400m hurdles last night. Loved seeing Warholm getting hyped up before the race, then dominating. Shame it wasn't a WR, but that might happen next year. Also great high jump competition. Lasitskine is incredible... very emotionless, but pretty much unbeatable. Also Levchenko

She is a babe! Check out Amalie Iuel a 400m hurdler from Norway.

I swear athletes are getting more and more attractive

200m final here we go, come on Adam Gemili - decent chance of a bronze here.

Gemili comes I think 5th. Just faded at the end.

EDIT: Was 4th.

so the organisers excuses for the small crowds are Qatar was awarded the games before the regional boycott was declared it was intended as an arab area games but now there are no local flights, the locals prefer distance running and have less love for the sprints and the finals are very late local time to suit international television .gabby logan gave the hapless IAAF rep plenty of stick my suspicion is even if all those factors had been optimal the crowds would have been still poor. they took the money .

Coe has been very brash about it:

Don't think his approach here is very self-aware or constructive. There's a wide spectrum between 'going to the same 8-9 places' for the championships and going somewhere completely ill-suited to hosting. We can take the championships to new places which will still also generate proper crowds. The BBC are doing well to promote the sport and the championships despite the empty stadium killing the atmosphere.

Agreed. Having said that, London also hosted the World Championship in 2017 and it was great in terms of attendance and atmosphere.

The World Championship in Moscow in 2013 also had attendance problems. That's what happens when you let money dictate....

Delighted Dina didn't feck it up. Controlled that really well.

Before it was fecking hilarious that the authorities moved a vocal group next to the BBC studio, loved that Gabby Logan immediately pointed out how subtle it was...

Such a shame that there’s so few people actually in attendance for times like this.

Johnson-Thompson could Thompson my Johnson any day of the week

Congratulations to Dina. Great race for her and fantastic achievement. Hoping many more to come.

It seems GB have appealed a ruling in the hammer event, which would mean we could get a silver. Seems that a throw was judged to have been a foul but it does not look like a foul on the camera angle. The athlete also missed out on another three throws.

Dunno what happens if we are successful, does he get the three attempts tomorrow? Think it was Steve Backley on commentary who immediately questioned the foul.

Hammer appeal was unsuccessful.

After all of the talk yesterday about Dina becoming the 7th female individual gold medallist, looking like we're gonna get the 8th straight away, KJT just needs to not break her leg and she's won the heptathlon. Could finish with a massive score as well.
