Asmir Begovic expects to be sold by Stoke City this summer - but has played down reports he has already agreed to join Manchester United.

Begovic has established himself as one of the Premier League's most consistent goalkeepers since joining from Portsmouth three years ago and is closing on 100 appearances for Stoke.

He has been mooted as a replacement for David de Gea at Old Trafford and there have also been claims that Manchester City want to sign the 25-year-old as a back-up for Joe Hart.

The Bosnia international insists he has not made a decision on his future, but believes Stoke's recent signing of Jack Butland will lead to his departure from the Britannia Stadium at the end of the season.

"I read in the papers that I said no to City and yes to United," Begovic told Oslobodjenje. "But the truth is, I haven't decided on anything.

"I didn't say yes or no to anybody. I haven't signed anything - no contract, no pre-contract. But I believe that Stoke didn't buy Butland to be a reserve so I think I'm going to be sold in the summer.

"To whom? I can't move to a smaller club and I also know that some top clubs are interested in me. They are also the only ones who can afford the fee.

"Now I'm just happy that January is over. It was a hard month for us, so many rumours. Now, we can focus on our games again."

England keeper Butland will link up with Stoke in the summer after the teenager was loaned back to Birmingham for the rest of the season last week.

He looks good yeah, but I'd prefer to stick with de Gea.

Please no.

Have to agree, would much rather stick with DDG.

There is no denying that he is a very good keeper and he is looking like filling his early potential. Wouldn't be a bad shout, if for some reason DDG happened to leave.

I keep reading about this, but I'd be surprised if we were interested.

Hoping its just him and his agent trying to stir up interest.

Probably a replacement for Lindegaard if it happens? Anders can't get a game at the moment and he isn't the type who would content to be just a number 2. Begovic and DDG will then battle it out to be the rightful number 1

If we're bringing in Begovic then its hopefully because De Gea is part of a deal for Ronaldo. Even so, I'd still be gutted to see him leave.

Madrid sell Ronaldo AND buy a replacement for St. Iker? Cant see that happening :)

Thanks but no thanks. Why should we spend money in a player who will spent the majority of time in the bench. And we are mental if we sell De Gea.

Tbh, De Gea might benefit from a loan somewhere where the spotlight isn't as intense. We all know he will be great in a couple of seasons time so I'd hate to sell and see Barca/Real benefit. But a loan is doable and he will come back a better player.

Begovic is a solid keeper but Idk if he's good enough for us.

Valdes to somewhere in Brazl
Reina to Barca
Begovic to Liverpool

Are you buying into the bullshit? He is doing just fine right now. A loan would be a backwards move imo.

De Gea is already better than Begovic. Why on Earth should we loan him and sign a keeper who will cost some money and is not as good as De Gea, and later return De Gea from the loan.

We should also loan Welbeck and sign (insert a decent Premiership striker) and later Welbeck will return stronger. Rafael too.

begovic is ok but seriously getting rid of de gea for him?

de gea has the potential to be the undisputed best keeper on the planet. such is his ceiling.

i would only sell de gea if it meant ronnie was coming home.

.

It is really difficult understanding this. You say that he will become the undisputed keeper on the world but you would sell him in a deal which includes Ronaldo.

De Gea is 22 and by your first statement we can have a great keeper for the next 15 years and in 10 of those years most likely he will be the best in the world. Ronaldo is 28 years old already, and probably in 2 years he will start regressing as a player while in 5 years, well he will be nothing special.

What's the thinking behind that? Has he expressed interest in going to Brazil?

His major sponsor is a Brazlian company called Penalty that is more than willing to pay for him to come play in Brazil. He said earlier in the year that he could see himself playing in Brazil in the future.

He's a very good keeper and deserves to move to a bigger club but I prefer DDG over him

Will make the same mistakes DDG makes but wont get half the media scrutiny thanks to the bunch of wankers over there

Begovic is a downgrade to de Gea and has a lower ceiling. Not a good move for the present or future.

There are a few mind boggling suggestions in this thread. Sell Anders, get Begovic and let him battle it out with De Gea? That's just even more of the keeper rotation we've been bemoaning in patches for the past year and a half. When has anything good ever come of that? Loaning out De Ga while he's already a sensational keeper, just because he still makes the odd mistake? Laughable really.

Why is it that supporters and the media invariably go completely braindead when talking about goalkeepers?

Not a good idea in my opinion.

I think Begovic is a very good keeper, but we already have a very good keeper with the potential to be great, we must stick with DDG as I think in a few years we will be drooling over how good he is.

There is also the fact, it is easier to look good as a keeper in a poorer team, there is less pressure and, lets be serious, Stoke do not exactly set out attacking formations, they basically employ a back 4 of centre halves that do not push on, makes it easier to be a keeper when you play behind that, you know that any arial attack will almost certainly be handled even if you do not come and claim the cross.
