the Glazers have spent, i posted yesterday the amount we had spent in the last 5 years. From memory £460mil this is 2nd only to City who spend £600m the spends of other clubs are in the £200mils at most with Liverpool only spending £101mil in the last 5 years - we just waste money for fun. Its not the spend thats the issue its buying the wrong players for huge sums of money....

I don't understand the persistence with him from several managers now. He has got a bit of character on the field, but I don't find him inspiring, and he spends most time hoofing the ball or yelling at the referee. Yes, he sometimes play okay, but most of the time he is a hindrance to our play. If we had recruited better fullbacks in due time, he would never be playing as much as he is now.

You obviously didn't read what I said properly. They did go through a few years where they spend a bit, but the last 2 years (since Sanchez) we have barely spent anything when you factor in sales etc. The Glazers have tightened the purse strings, that is clear.
I understand your point but take issue with the wording. The Glazers haven't spent. As owners they have literally never spent a penny of their money on this football club.
Banter FC. I should have added we probably only offered him a new contract because we are too cheap to go out and buy a replacement. Nice to see Di Marzio saying he has turned our offer down

It is time for him to go and be replaced. He's 35 now, he has a great offer from Italy where it's less intense, we don't (and shouldn't) play him much, so why are we doing this?

I don’t know what’s sadder, us offering the extension or him turning it down to go to Inter. Either way I am happy to see him out the door. Never a question of effort or attitude because he always gave everything, just not good enough and represents the decline of the club perfectly

Now it's reported he has rejected the offer. This is meant to be the captain of the club and regardless what you think of him as a player if he jumps ship mid season it will highlight how depressingly poor the club is run.

Good luck to him. Was often quite good, never a single bad story in the press, never any lack of effort or energy.
I don't understand us offering him a contract: We have AwB + Dalot on the right, Shaw + Williams on the left and they've been doing a good enough job. Sure he'll be a good backup if both our fullback options are fecked on either side, but I'd rather just play young players.
Too inconsistent for winger role and quite average as fullback.
Hopefully this example won't happen in future of this club as it looks more and more grim and pessimistic.

I don`t blame him at all for wanting to leave. He`s got a chance of winning trophies at Inter in the last few years of his career. He`s given good service to United and always given his best . If all the players we have had during his time here had put in the same amount of effort we would be far better off now for it.

If he wants to leave he has deserved to be let go for a reasonable amount of cash from Inter due to his long record at the club. He propably just wants to play more fotball and get the most out of his last years.

the fact that they ‘haven’t put any of the own money in’ is completely irrelevant to how much we spend on transfer fees and wages.
Back to Young - given our injuries across the squad, and our inexperience and injury prone full backs, I’d rather he stayed until the summer. He’s still a good player, and I don’t imagine he will be anything but professional if he’s here for another few months.
If he goes in this window, there won’t be a fee involved or it will be nominal (£500k-£1m max).

it’s ridiculous because of the timing and the reactionary nature of a contact offer... if it’s true?
I would see nothing wrong in offering him another year, but if that was the case, it should have been done in November, and I’ve no doubt he would have signed at that point in time - not once he’s been talking to other clubs. Very poor if it’s true we have offered him a contract at this stage.
personally, I think he should be kept until Jan, and then released, which I presume was the plan last summer.

I want to say he's not good enough anymore so it's fine but that statement doesn't hold any merit in reference to United these days. If the rumors going around that he no longer wants to be included in the squad and is pushing to leave now, it really says a lot about Ole and the status of the club. Senior players like Young are usually the first to lose faith in a manager. We've already seen statements from DDG and Matic this year so it's hardly surprising.
It is baffling, even when he was signed, he was barely good enough to be here. The fact he stayed 7 seasons after that probably sums up the state of our club. People bleat on about his 'professionalism', guess what, that's the minimum you expect from any professional player being paid millions to do their job. And he's barely done a good job of that.
He had zero problems stinking the place out, season after season, and harped about his love for United, when his alternatives were taking a pay-cut and taking a huge step down by moving to relegation contenders in PL/Championship. But, the moment an opportunity has arisen to play for a CL club. Club captain is happy to move mid-way through the season, when the club is going through its most tumultuous season this century and needs a figure like him in the dressing room. He's no different to likes of Sanchez, Lukaku etc. who jumped ship, the moment a better placed club came calling, happy to pay the wages they were earning here. This forum branded them as 'bad characters' and 'mercenaries', yet folks are falling themselves over to thank 'absolute professional' Young for his 'loyalty' over 9 seasons when he's dis-interested in even being part of matchday squad anymore once Inter came calling. You couldn't make this shit up. Loyal is what I would call likes of Scholes and Giggs, who rejected better placed clubs, and lucrative contract offers to stay put at United. Not Ashley fecking Young.
Probably because we are not in the Champions League and the massive spending took us backwards not forwards. They ran out of new debt to spend.
It's pretty incredible. Only reason Young stayed so long is because United were his peak and nobody else wanted him until Inter came along to bail us out. Many players would love to be at our club for 10 years. It's just that they're not good enough and weren't as lucky to stay in some small role. Young should consider himself lucky, not loyal.
The most mindblowing thing about Young is that he was allowed to come back home with the team after that mistake in the second leg vs. Barcelona. That night I decied not to watch another game with him in the team - he almost gave me a heart attack. My break might soon be over.
