Don't agree. Yes, the fee was too big & we shouldn't have bought him at all - but despite the history, he's here now and he's a useful squad player to have on the bench. There are far worse players in the squad we should be getting rid of first, imho.
Having "one of the best wingers in the division" should be the standard for Utd as you rightly say, though that's not essential for a squad/bench player - you talk as though he should only be assessed as a starter.
Which players are they out of curiousity? To my mind, the only players that should be out the door before him are Rojo and Blackett. I don't rate Fellaini, but too his credit he's actually doing alright at the moment.

He's on big wages and lingard is more valuable as a squad player now. Its time for him to move on now and let the club get a few pence in change.

Would be a brilliant transfer for Crystal Palace. We won't recoup much but atleast they have some dosh now with the sale of Bolasie, so they can afford his wages.

Great servant for us but at times he was our starting option on the wing. Would always kinda depress me seeing him on the team sheet but he did slowly win me over with his hard work and determination.

I remember when we bought him, thinking "why another middle of the road winger when we need cm's?"

His purchase never made sense to me.

Says it all that the most memorable part of his stay here has been a bird crapping in his mouth.

Kanchelskis, Giggs, Beckham, Ronaldo... Young and Valencia

Huge drop in quality. We had become Liverpool signing poor wide players.

Because 2 of our signings were underwhelming on paper? Bit knee jerk considering we also bought Di Maria.

I thought his most memorable part was the 8-2 for us. He was our best player, couple goals, couple assists or something of the sort.

Seems to be likable and happy to be here, but its obvious he's not really the level of player we should have in our squad. Hope he gets a move this window so he can get minutes elsewhere.

The fans can have cult heroes it is why ole is loved so much more then Ronaldo despite not having half of the talent

Recent years I can see an attempt to bring in more flair so if it doesn't work I.e. di Maria it's understandable.

Once Ronaldo left we brought some very average players and for me Valencia and Young were never United quality wingers especially not Young.

I've always had this niggling feeling that it was more because SAF was constrained a bit more by the Glazers then (Kind of like how Wenger is with Arsenal today). Obviously our massive sponsorship deals following Gill's departure has changed the picture somewhat.

We were in for Hazad and Lucas, mind. Failed on both so I can understand the disappointment when the plan B is Young & Valencia.

One of the main reasons we qualified for the top 4 under Van Gaal in the first season. Half the caf had their pitchforks out ready to stab him while waiting for him to fail. Turns out he saw off Di Maria and was one of the best players in the run in. Then it was supposed to be Depay who was supposedly miles better than Young. Until everyone saw him play that is. Good squad player and I see zero reason to sell unless he wants first team football. Aside from Martial the only one who can take players on and put some pressure.

Yup, agree.

He is an ok squad player and has been one of our best performers at points in the last couple of years when we had underperforming players and an horrendous injury list. I think we have definitely reached the point now though where there are 2-3 players better than him in every position he can play in so it would be best for him to move on.

He's a better player than Memphis. But age isn't in his favour.

not just on paper

not just on paper

My point being, you can't be dismissive of our wingers recruitment by singling out transfers of young and valencia alone. Our coups of di Maria and depay showed we had ambitioun to get world class levels or potential, beating PSG to both.

Whether they worked out or not is a different discussion.

You are 'avin a laugh right? Valencia is way more complete as RB than Ashley Young.
Don't agree, valencia has made a lot of poor errors at the back in terms of his positioning and reading of play. He is however very strong 1 v 1 plus his pace allows him to recover a lot of the time. Offensively Young is better imo.

Oh yea, him. Needs to go. Martial and Memphis for the left, Mkhitaryan and Lingard for the right. The Youngster is simply not very good. He's a winger who can't really beat a man, and will get 3-5 goals in a season probably.

Seems a decent bloke though, even if he is a cheat.

I reckon that we will see a very different Valencia this season. As proven in the Bournemouth match where he basically ran the entire right-wing on his own since Mata cut in at every opportunity.

Sadly I expect our Valencia to get positionally exposed against the proper teams in the league though. But to no greater effect than Ashley would have been.

We'll agree to disagree on that one.

And what do you base this on? Considering that Ashley has played very rarely at RB, like pointed out by another poster in here.

There is simply no basis of comparison. Ashley has played too few matches at RB to be compared to Valencia.

We should 100% keep him. Would put in a shift in the Europa League.

When he used to play at wingback he never showed the tactical naivete that Valencia often showed.

You mean all three times he played there? It was way easier to look good as a defender in LvG's setup, since the entire team were set up to take no risk and always be in balance.

He's a 31 yo player on over £100k a week not making the match day squads. It doesn't make any sense keeping him.

I have a hard time seeing where he fits in. Is he our second choice right back? Or maybe Mourinho thinks that he could get game time as LB, RB, LW, or RW depending on injuries? It'll be interesting to see if he is selected for the cup games.

He is not a RB. Stop with this nonsense. Hope we sell him, but think he will end up being a back up winger with not much game time. Probably will get sold next summer anyway.

Might end up leaving himself if he wants first team football. Zaha moving to Spurs could open an actual deal for Palace this time, following that strange twitter rumour.

Yeah, that would make some sense. Young to Palace would be good for all parties I think.
