Arthur Melo - Juventus's old number five

Yagami’s father. Sad to see his Liverpool career didn’t take off (not really)

Probably Yagami. I won't tag him because he'll likely get pelters.

Oh yeah, him. He was a good poster as well. Until he chose that bizarre hill to die on. Didn’t help when he chose to make a come back as soon as Casemiro had a dodgy few games, only to disappear agains as soon as he found some form. Glastonesque behaviour.

Just found out this guy played for Fiorentina last season and made 33 appearances. I genuinely forgot he existed until his name came up in a PSR conversation about dodgy deals. Was hugely rated at one point. Seen as the ideal player for Barca m, ultra press resistant. Was talked about in exalted company. Still only 27 but apparently a complete wash out of a player.

I also forgot that there ever was an Arthur Melo. So my first thought was, that this Melo-guy who played for Juve 1000 years ago could never be 27. Turns out Felipe Melo still plays for Fluminense at the age of 41 according to whoscored.

fecking hell…Felipe Melo is still playing? Mental. I also just found out that Roque Santa Cruz, who made his first team debut in 1997….1997!!!…..is still playing in the Paraguay first division. He last scored a goal for his club Libertad, in May. Aged 42 and 8 months. . He made his debut in 1997, let that sink in. It’s 2024 and he’s still playing.

I also read that Romario, who owns a club in Rio called America (not sure what level they play at, but they are professional), has just registered himself to play this season, and he’s 58. I am sure the level is really low, but still hilarious. I bet he still knows how to score a goal with ridiculous ease.

Yeah supreme talent - fit into the Barca dna like a glove. Should’ve solved their midfield woes post Xavi/Iniesta….not sure 100% what happened but can only assume a case of all the talent but very little of the mental stuff to supplement that talent.

Remember watching him in the UCL against spurs in London, and he was so dominant (alongside Messi). What a waste.

That’s some fantastic stories I didn’t know about . Thanks Simon. Romario, what a legend.

What until you find out about this Japanese guy called Miura....

Huge waste. I heard he was a hard partier and at one point had an injury layoff caused by untreated STDs. Pretty sure his wasted career is all down to personal choices.

I went down a rabbit hole after hearing about Felipe Melo

I know about Miura but to be honest had only heard about him because of his age. Whereas Roque Santa Cruz is a player I remember well from his prime, being at Bayern etc. There are a bunch of players in their mid to late forties still playing somewhere but it’s much more eye catching when they were once really good players you remember competing at the top level in a past era. It’s like finding out a couple of years ago that Rivaldo was still playing. There were older players out there, he was 41 or 42 I believe, but I had assumed he had retired 7 or 8 years before.

I’m a sucker for stuff like that. I still remember when Socrates came out of retirement and played a whopping 12 minutes for Garforth Town back in 2004. He was 50, and died just six and a half years later. He Infamously asked to warm up before he came on, and did so by going back to the dressing room to stand in front of the heater and drink a couple of beers and smoke a cigarette. That same season they had Lee Sharpe play for them. And the year after Antonio Careca had a short stint with the club. Legendary.

He's there with Óscar Cardozo, who recently turned 41 himself, famed for being prolific with Benfica back in the day and a striker I wanted back to join us simply because of his numbers. His record on wiki are impressive too with Libertad. Having a quick glance at their recent games, it seems he and Santa Cruz rotate and/come off the bench. I wonder if they've both started at the same time as it must be some record for the oldest strike partnership.

Those are some great stories. Roque started his career when I started elementary school. Nonetheless he's still playing professional football while I am barely able to get out of bed on some days.

Class is permanent. I actually support his return (as in, club sponsorship). Can't embed IG, maybe someone can tell me which part of the URL to get rid of.

Comments are funny. People pointing out he never trained as a footballer and now that he is a senator he takes up training
