Around one in five professional football players currently use snus, tobacco-free nicotine pouches or both, according to a study.

Weird thing is, these people are using the lightweight stuff. You won't find the majority of people using the hardcore stuff that burns through to your nose.

That's not weird at all.

A few reasons:

1. Trends - smoking cigarettes started to become lame here in the late 90's/early 2000's. Snus just kind of took over.

2. Less bothersome - snus only stinks for a few seconds when you open the box or try to kiss someone who's snusing. While annoying, it doesn't come close to trying to escape from cigarette smoke.

3. Much easier to hide (for some) - depending on your face shape, it's not always that obvious that you're using snus.

4. Super addictive - I honestly think it's harder to quit snus than cigarettes.

5. Lack of knowledge - snus wasn't considered that unhealthy 20 years ago. Many people got addicted back then. And even now plenty claim that while it's unhealthy, so is alcohol, excessive sugar and smoking. They have just "picked their vice".
Excellent breakdown. I started smoking at 14, snus at 15, managed to quit smoking at 16, I’ve never been able to quit snus. Also 3, you really can’t tell when I have a pouch in. As far as I can tell (personally) it doesn’t affect my fitness.

His story his hilarious. Poor bastard.

Aye

Would have probably been in the bathroom for a week if he was given one of the stronger kinds of snus that are sold in Sweden.

not surprised at all. I was relatively close to some hockey players in the past, and they practically all did it instead of smoking. Mind you, that was 15-20 years ago, so I wouldn't be surprised if it were even more common nowadays.

Woosh? What did I miss?

"You think 1-5 people in the UK smoke/snus?"

Don't know where you're from so things might be different in your country, but that would normally be read as between 1 and 5 people, or 1 to 5 people in total.

That's why you got this as a joking reply:

"I've not seen any studies but I am going to go out on a limb and say that more than 5 people in the UK smoke. "

20% as a fraction is usually written 1/5th or 1/5.

I used to work with a guy from the armed forces in Sweden and he gave me one of his snus on a night out. Absolutely blew my head off.

Thanks for spelling it out for him, was irritating me that he didn't get it.

Was just reading about the pouches, says a side effect can be hiccups.

Not surprised, I vape (smoke too for some stupid reason), and when I'm adding my small bottles of nicotine shots to the larger bottles of flavoured stuff I bite the little spout off the top so it pours quicker without having to squeeze when mixing. Often get a little bit of the strong nicotine stuff in my mouth as a result and it sets me off hiccuping.

I'm not going to die am I?

Right ok.

Doubt Rasmus would but Brandon Williams is almost a guarantee.
It was just a play on words on my end, I don't for a second believe Rasmus is at it but could fully believe Brandon the balloon inhaler Williams is at it.

Probably. Eventually. But not from hiccups.

I don’t get tobacco. It’s like all drugs, but without the rewarding high. I just don’t get why anyone would start doing it. Just smoke some weed every now and then. At least you get something out of it, other than cancer.

It's extremely commonplace amongst young people in Denmark. All my wife's nephews consume it and shrug their shoulders and say "you smoked" at our generation-

As far as I know it isn't a forbidden product by Fifa or Uefa?

Why would it be forbidden? It's nicotine

It's not exactly healthy. I don't have time to check for other studies right now but here is an article, in English, about a recent one

https://www.sciencenorway.no/cancer...points-out-that-the-numbers-are-small/2246791

As the article points out the numbers are small, but it's not exactly a habit that one would seem to think is conductive to leading a healthy life. Plus, you look like an absolute moron if you use snus
Big macs and vindaloos aren't healthy either should we ban them for footballers?

Why? Its far better than smoking.

Brilliant response. It's better than something horrifically bad for you.

Like asking why do you smash your head on a wooden fence.
Because its better than smashing it on a metal fence.

Should clubs require their athlete employees to eat healthy in order to maximise their performances? Yes, of course.
Besides, it's a dumb argument. Nicotine regularly is obviously worse for you than the odd big mac.
