Argentina NT | WC Discussion

As someone who wanted Argentina to win, the ref was obviously more favourable to them. Paredes probably deserved a straight red for his actions, Messi was getting fouls for everything and the 10 minutes should've even been more after Argentina wasted more than half of them.

Happy they got through because the Netherlands played rubbish football and that semi-final against Croatia would've been torture.

Basically my feelings, plus Martinez (goalie) is a massive shithouse.

Complete opposite to Brazil Croatia penalty shootout. Both teams respectful to the other and lots of hugging after the game.
It's like comparing United vs Arsenal to City va Liverpool. Totally different encounters. Brazil Croatia was a regular match this clearly had spite from both sides.

Yeah, now put the Netherlands players insulting and trying to distract them during the penalties. Or everything Van Gaal has been saying, their keeper...

If you talk too much, don't expect people to be nice to you.
Yep, feels like a tad bit of bias against South American sides, and things get a little overlooked when it’s European sides. Still, classless but the Dutch were clearly playing at it as well.

Echo everything in this post.

What did LVG say before the game that so irritated Messi?

He said that Messi is not involved when the opposite team has the ball, and that’s an advantage.
He also said that if they get to penalties, they will have the advantage.
And when the lineups where revealed, he said we were scared.

besides, there’s a history between Van Gaal and Argentinian players. We know about the Di Maria story but the first one to be mistreated by Van Gaal was Riquelme at Barcelona.

The “topo giggio” is an iconic celebration in protest by Riquelme. Messi honored him doing it against Van Gaal.

You're not exactly saints either and certainly have a nasty streak. Add to that your usual arrogance especially from your supporters.

Netherlands are a great footballing nation, always had wonderful players and should have won at least one WC, but I'm never sad when I see them dumped out.
Haha I was a bit angry and drunk last night. :wenger:

Argentina deserved to win, but Im not sure where this sudden arrogance axcusation comes from? Our entirr countrt has been screaming about how shite we are. It's just Van Gaal and that has nothing to do with Argentina, that's just Van Gaal.

@Sayros

I do think Argentina overreacted to certain things but Dutch were talking a lot of crap and this was even before the PK’s. It wasn’t unprovoked.
Fair enough, my issue was far more with your GK trying to act like a tough guy for no reason to De Jong and the kicked ball at the bench.

Ah thanks, didn't know that. No wonder if was so fierce yesterday.

On paper I couldn’t see how this team could win the World Cup. But having watched them, they don’t give many chances away and press a lot more in their own half, rather than the opposition. This is against the normal press we see from City and Liverpool. Interesting tactics.

Both teams were shithousing each other. Both teams were roughing up each other. I don't get the one sided views

Yup. It was one of those explosive matches which I do like. It's all become too placid nowadays.

True, both teams were as bad as each other and ref completely lost control of the game

If you can't take it don't dish it out, this happens in every league in every country around the world.

Neither team can really claim to be a victim with all the shithousing but Netherlands surrounding pretty much every penalty taker took it to a new level. But somehow there is weird one sided narrative here about Argentina being the dirtier side

Yeah, that's what happened, he just kicked a ball! Have to laugh at Martinez complaining about the added time when he take 1 min to take every single goal kick once his team goes up, no matter how early, does the exact same for Villa. Probably one of the most unlikeable players in the league.

For me, it's the post game stuff that really tipped Argentina over. I don't really like the proper arsey stuff during the match, but obviously it happens and tempers flair. But to celebrate like that when all is said and done, is just utterly classless. I'd be saying the same thing if the Dutch did it, but somehow, I don't think that would have happened.

I think Brazil would have defeated them. Croatia I feel will fall short. I really wanted to see Brazil v
Argentina in a WC, may have been a cagey affair but would have been fun and tense.

Such an unlikeable team, it’s definitely not their fault though.

I always have a soft spot for Argentina, but now I want them out. They just won a WC QF and all they do post match is to complain about the ref, whine and insult.

Why do you keep saying the 10 mins was laughable. There was multiple subs there was 3 goals, there was lots of time lost with minor bust ups. That's the difference between the usual 6 7 mins and the 10. 10 in this game wasn't unreasonable

Because it was. The stoppages didn't add up to the time he added on. Three of the subs came on at the same time and took one minute. The big 'fight' near the end took one more minute. The time from Netherlands' goal to kick off was like 40 seconds. Argentina's goal lost one minute. Even accounting for the new approach to added time, 10 was on the generous side.

I'd ask why not even one additional minute was added on in the first half of extra time. Did all those stoppages just cease to happen from then on? There were two stoppages for subs in the second half of extra time and he only added on an extra minute. So the sub breaks were the only thing to delay the game in that period? There were no fouls, no moments where he spoke to players, no set pieces? If he's going to be pedantic as feck with timekeeping in one half, it's quite strange that he wouldn't carry that over for others, no?

The reaction from the Argentina players was justified.

Not that I expect the people who were crying last night to come in now and admit it.
The reaction from the Dutch players was justified because Argentina started with the shithousery and the ref allowed it, so you just gotta go with it

Yeah the referee was incredibly inconsistent.

Messi did get away with a yellow for the handball but I would say that just proves his inconsistency rather than his bias.

Which is why Timber wasnt sent off for one of his many fouls after the yellow.

Both sets of players were sick of him and constantly complaining about how he reffed the game.

In what world would a guy who wants Argentina to progress add 10 minutes of extra time?

To be fair, the best Argentina instalments always had this mean attitude… yet they have to prove they can go all the way this year because it just seems they get bailed out again and again… which is good, will it be enough, though??

Then don't attempt to claim some moral high ground afterwards , simple!

Both countries have a long and storied history of football shithousery so I don't know why the knives are out for Argentina.

Argentina Team is just not good enough, it’sa miracle and almost on Messi that they got into semifinals. Love that they kicked out the Dutch, such a dirty team, and would like they kick out Croatia now because of some salty fans round here.

Have felt from the beginning of the tournament Argentina are getting favourable treatment from refs. All 3 penalties awarded were questionable. It’s the story that would write the World Cup for purists, Messi to win it with Argentina.

When certain behaviors are allowed and not sanctioned in due time, these things happen.
More and more players throw themselves to the ground to deceive the referee, and even later they protest and go as victims.
This goes for all countries, some more than others.

Don't worry this will be the attitude if you win the World Cup. For Messi it'll mean that he was 'helped' there and so dodn't match Maradona. The only teams left that, by this forum, are 'allowed' to win the World Cup are England, France and Portugal. Croatia are too boring and Argentina are cheats. Personally I really hope its you or Croatia to win it all but you'll take nothing but abuse from the rest unfortunately. And if Messi wins it, it will have been given to him so he still can't be the best ever. This with England having Saka in their team who is the worst diver in the World by a huge distance objectively.

Edit: also the Dutch frekick they score from was actually a free to Arg for the push on the guy in front of the Dutch player first which caused the whole thing. However the rest will never accept this.

Also, Virgil van Dijk leveling a player for kicking a ball. Arguably should have seen red, in my opinion. Complete bully tactics, and I'm glad they are out.
This must be a joke. Paredes had nothing to do on the pitch after this shit, should at the very least be a double booking considering the foul warranted a yellow on its own before even considering shooting the ball into the opponents' bench.

VVD was rightly booked for reacting with an attitude that can't be tolerated on a football pitch but if your takeaway from the whole situation is that the Dutch got advantaged by the incident you're out of your mind.

The Saudi and Netherlands ones were penalties though. With last night, decisions were everywhere, not just for Argentina.

I will come out and admit there was fault on both sides now have seen some of the footage
