Are the lads back in training yet?

fecking hell back already? Feels like they were just playing a week ago in the cup final. Not much of a break this year

Because we had the world cup, the season finished a couple weeks later than it should have.

Lovely to see the Norwegian kid there. Here’s hoping for first team involvement.

When are the likes of Rashford joining up?

You must be very sure if you dare to claim that Martial isnt injured. Not exactly the safe option to pick. I didnt spot Martial in the YouTube training video either but i also didnt really look for him specifically.
Saw a pic a few days ago with him

Mainoo Looks like he’s definitely been in the gym but he looks pretty graceful with the ball, he could be our breakthrough guy this season.

The rest of the squad returns to Carrington on Saturday. EtH doesn’t expect any of them to be involved against Lyon, as they need a bit of training before playing.

They are now.

I know players these days are very dedicated to their profession and it's the in thing to work hard during the off season, but I really hope some of these lads did the sensible thing and got some much needed extended mental and physical rest. Obviously these are just pics, and I'm hoping it's just the flight, but Bruno looks like he's put himself through a more gruelling break than when we were in 4 competitions.

Uncle Case, now he looks like a man who's been on holiday!

Can two guys be friends these days without it being a 'bromance'?

yeah. i’ve got a few close mates and no one ever uses that term for us, and we’re always doing bro-ey things together, like; lifting weights, high-fiving, giving each other bed time kisses.

The players on international duties started their holidays around 19-20 June. I'm sure they had a couple of weeks totally off and then used the last 1,5-2 weeks to get back fit again.

Oh and I think Casemiro smuggled MG to Carrington in his mouth.

Yeah I reckon so too. I however think for a footballer (especially one like Bruno), 2 weeks completely off may not be enough rest to fully recharge and let your body repair itself. I'm sure team doctors know better than I though!

Sometime, perhaps a decade or two ago, it seemed like players actually used more or less the whole off-season to rest and relax (or drink like crazy) but the way the game is going the players kind of have to do some proper training for at least a week before they return to their clubs. I'd say a couple of weeks off and then mixing the next couple of weeks between training and relaxing might be enough for the body to recover. It's the mental part I'm more concerned about.

I would have given Bruno and Rashy another week off whom literally played the whole of last season, but then i’m not the manager so let’s hope they are really well rested physically and mentally!

Hey if he’s big he must be a DM. I mean that totally worked with McTominay right

That's my worry, this new thing of a DM being the deepest midfielder must mean he breaks up play and is purely defensive with work rate like Kanté, there are plenty of brilliant examples of deeper midfielders who set the tone and become deep lying playmakers like Carrick was for us a bit, I actually see Mainoo from what I've seen as a box to box player without perhaps the typical dribbling skills you would expect but with a higher pass game than that position typically requires but I do think ETH is trying to hone his game as it's clear from how he used our squad this year at least that he's got a deep lying defensive midfielder (Casemiro) for which we have no cover, an 8 as a deep lying playmaker like Eriksen or Bruno when he played deeper and the 10 that actually tracks back a lot and does a lot of defensive work too but is there to force high up turnovers and chance creation which only Bruno does effectively. The purchase of Mount however makes me think he want's two hybrid 8/10's with Bruno & Mount either side of Casemiro who both have legs and can progress the ball better.

It remains to be seen but I think that element of Mainoo's game is the one we are working on and Eriksen will play vs smaller teams where we expect more of the ball and his vision, passing can be fully utilised, which furthers the need for real Casemiro cover.
