Are longer songs better?

Absolutely they do - why spend 8 minutes when you can say it all in 2mins 30 sec

:D

And be very cryptic in the process.

I remember in yr 10 Music we studied them and the one song I remember looking at was Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds.

Sgt. Pepper is class.

I'm with Weaste on this. Long songs give you the possibility to compose a song consisting of almost entirely different parts within a theme, and they lack repetition, see Bohemian Rhapsody as a great example.

If they always are better? I don't know, but long songs do have a certain appeal to them for above stated reason.

Agreed. They just seem to have more of an "epic" feel to them.

Bohemian Rhapsody and Stairway to Heaven are two of the biggest pieces of drivelling shite ever committed to vinyl. Like A Rolling Stone is a masterpiece so I'll let you off.

Yes, Stairway to Heaven is not even the best long song on that album.

It's the worst track on the album, in fact the worst track ever laid down by Led Zep.

I may have let the worst track on the album comment slide, but to then say its their worst track...dont be a total fecking dolt...ok its overplayed and maybe over-rated and zep have loads of songs better but dont overegg the whole "stairway to heaven is shite" thing cause then it becomes a bit too obvious youre not really a zeppelin fan and are just spouting platitudes to appear informed.

oh and the answer of course is some longer songs are better but some short songs are better.

Poet and The Pendulum really is a great song indeed.
As is Ghost Love Score (10 mins)

Some of Dream Theater's songs are great examples of this as well. Octavarium (24:00), A Change of Seasons (23:06) and The Count of Tuscany (19:16) are some of my all time favorite songs.

Don't expect symphonic metal though. That second part of my post was more a general comment to this whole thread.

But Dream Theater is always worth a listen.

The last 8 minutes of The Count Of Tuscany are up there with the best music i have ever heard.
