I watched on tv yesterday as the arctic monkeys performed at glastonbury but there wasn't any rhythm or rhyme in their songs. I know that they've had massive singles and stuff but what's the big hype around them. Their songs sounded like crap to me but that's just my opinion.

So what do you guys think of them......

I've heard of them aswell, but not quite sure what all the fuss is about...

So let me get this straight, you've "heard of them" but not heard them actually? If that's the case you won't be sure what all the hype is about.

Decent 1st album some very good tracks on there which get you moving your feet. Other then there 1st single brianstorm off there 2nd album I've not heard any of the others, I don't want to if it's anything like that either.

I've heard one or two of their songs..."do me a favour?" I think, and "Thks for the mmrs?" they were ok but nothing special.

It's a cracking album Ret.

Took me about four listens though for me to get into, but I love it now.

Give it a chance.

Another overhyped Indie band in my opinion.

Despite what Kinky will inevitably contribute...their songs, musically, are a lot more sophisticated/complicated than the average "indie" band out there. That's why, on first listen, there does appear to be little "rhyme or rhythm" Of course, that simply isn't true.

Their lyrics walk the expert line between easily accessible and deeply astute. They can be moving, funny and cutting.

Plus, their drummer is the shit.

Of course, the music police will pounce on this post any second now, as is their wont, unable to accept that different people like different things.

p.s. First person to quote my post by rewriting "Plus, their drummer is shit" will be outed as a buggerer of small animals.

I was marvelling at the drummer today, rewatching yesterdays Glasto.

Great fecking drummer.

you are a defensive fellow aren't you?

In my opinion they are an overhyped indie band, who have good some good tunes but aren't really that special. NME bumb the shit out of them.

Not at all, "Another overhyped Indie band in my opinion" is the same brushing comment you made in another thread on this subject. And what an insightfull and informative offering it was too.

Pointless.

I get a kick out of their Yorkshire attitude as well. I lived in Huddersfield for seven years so have a great affinity with the tykes.

This can't be the same band I'm thinking of

Especially the part about the lyrics. I mean, what?

I'm not saying they're crap, or that it's forbidden to like them, but people fuss over them as if they're something really incredible. They're not. There's no real soul, or depth to their music. Their songs are just, well...songs

Some people fuss over them because they think they're incredible.

Others don't, because they don't.

Not liking them is one thing...getting at people who do is another.

Well, I haven't bothered to listen to any of their music... However, if a bunch of monkeys can survive in the arctic then they are fully deserving of my respect.

It's not really my kind of music but I still quite like them. I respect them for how much they hate publicity and how they refused to headline a gig after only releasing one album: they didn't think they deserved it. It's refreshing to see that kind of attitude these days.

performing at glastonbury, that can't be public now can it:lol:
btw all bands love the publicity or they won't perform live. If they hated that much why didn't they just release their singles soley on the internet and not show their faces, seeing as they "hate publicity"

You're an idiot.

Well I may have miss understood what he wrote but no band in the world hates publicity:nervous:

They have to play live gigs to satisfy the fans and of course the record company, it's probably in their contract somewhere.

Also, they are not a band who 'enjoy' the publicity as much as say, Busted. Most of the awards ceremonies where they are nominated/win prizes, they usually fail to attend. Also at a recent one the singer even had his mum with him to accept the award.

Oh i c:D

Arctic Monkeys are alright for what they do I guess. Reminds me of the hype around Oasis in the early and mid ninties. A few catchy tunes and portraying a 'working class' image gets the public on their side and the hype machine takes over.

In my opinion, there is little that is special about either Arctic Monkeys or Oasis musically, lyrically or through live performance (I have seen them both live); it has all been done many times before. But I don't have anything against these bands or people that like them, as I said, they're alright for what they do. But they don't interest or excite me in any way.

Each to their own then...

you really are deffensive, i've seen it when anyone says that they don't get the band

i respect the fact that you like them and haven't insulted them saying "oh they're shit", i just stated my opinion which i am entilted to do. if you don't like my opinion thats your problem but calling it "pointless" just because you don't agree is very ignorant. This thread after all was about how he doesn't get them and was asking for opinions of them.

I agree....they're alright. No more than that.

Just call me a cnut and have done with it FFS.

Ha, i wouldn't

i love music debates, its one of the things that makes music so great one mans Venga Boys is anothers Beatles

It's hard knowing that I am right and everyone else is just deluded, one day you will all come round to my way of thinking ;)

"Performing" and "publicity" are not the same thing. You can love performing because of the adrenaline and because you're sharing your music with loads of people who rate it and want to hear it. Publicity is going to award shows and doing ads, both of which they don't like to do.

I'm sure they love their fans and love being able to play their music infront of thousands of people who want to listen to them, but they hate being famous. And it's not that common these days to find famous people with that attitude, which is why I respect them.

I have no idea what all the hype is about just an average band that the music industry NME etc. decided to proclaim them as an amazing band so all the sheep followed.
