Apple to Buy Sony?

They're one of the best when it comes to the marketing - they REALLY know how to sell a product, regardless of how technically underwhelming and overpriced it may be. I mean they've already monopolised the Mp3 market, most of the laptop market and more or less the phone market too (for now anyway).

That is simply wrong.
Agree on your marketing point though.

I wouldn't be that surprised if Sony did want to sell off SCE actually.

Apparently it might be Activision/Blizzard, who are the most profitable games company at the moment (Call of Duty, World of Warcraft, Guitar Hero, Starcraft). If that happens I won't be playing WoW anymore, I can assure you.

What would you say the financial impact of the PS3 was as a vehicle for Blu-ray and 3D? Without it, Blu-ray would have been dead in the water and HD-DVD would have won the format war. How much will Sony gain back in business in terms of Blu-ray licencing (software and hardware - blu-violet diode production etc.) and disc pressing over say the 15+ years of its life? If 3D is a success, how much will the 40m+ PS3s capable of 3D help push TV and glasses sales? We're not even getting into new sales of movies on a different disc format.

SCE might have made a very large loss as a division in terms of hardware with the PS3, but the situation is more complicated than that. As above, and the fact that many of the components come from other Sony divisions such as semi-conductor and electronics, propping them up in the process.

Maybe 'monopolise' was too strong a word.

But they've really left their mark in the laptop market, and they were easily the dominant smartphone in the market before Android's recent-ish surge.

No. They. Weren't.
