The man who conned his way on to Manchester United's official team photo says the daring stunt was planned two years ago. And Karl Power, from Droylsden in Greater Manchester, reckoned: "It must be the biggest and best football sting of all time."

We were planning to do it for this year's final in Milan but we doubted United would get there

Karl Power stunned the United players prior to their Champions League clash against Bayern Munich by strolling on to the pitch and posing for a pre-match photograph.

Millions watching on television were also amazed and, after catching their breath, were keen to find out just who the impostor was.

After a massive manhunt, Power was unveiled.

And the unemployed labourer, who planned the stunt as a tribute to Old Trafford legend Eric Cantona, was clearly delighted with his amazing achievement.

"Men and my mates have been doing things like this for years - but this was the best," Power told The Sun.

Keane spots Power as he gatecrashes the official team photo

"We've videoed players in hotels and got ourselves into official press conferences before all the biggest games in Europe.

"It was during a match against in Barcelona in Spain that we first hatched the plot. We got onto the pitch and it was so easy we thought we could go one better.

"We were planning to do it for this year's final in Milan but we doubted United would get there.

"So we knew it was Munich or bust. We planned it like a military campaign and brought three United kits with us - red, white and blue.

"Then we found out where the team were staying and got one of the directors to tell us what colour they'd be wearing.

"We then went back and rehearsed it all in our hotel room. We got a taxi to the ground pretended we were with a TV crew, and the gatemen let us in.

When the teams walked out, I went to the players' entrance and knew nothing was going to stop me

Karl Power
"We managed to get down to pitchside and waited for the players to come out of the tunnel
"Then with 20 minutes till kick-off, we saw an opening where there were no stewards and a couple of us walked all the way round the running track and ended up behind the goal.

"We sat with the photographers watching the warm-up. Then, when the teams walked out, I went to the players' entrance and knew nothing was going to stop me."

Gary Neville almost ruined the stunt by attempting to point Power out, but the 33-year-old United fan stayed put as the photographers snapped away.

Someone i dont know who maybe Power, did it at a cricket match. When the batesmen got out and was walking up to the pavilion this guy walked onto the pitch with all the gear on looking like the next batesmen, everyone was clapping him on as though he was on the team and then he got half way, took the helmut off and walked back to the stands, everyone was in laughter even the police officers.

Sports prankster Karl Power gets Old Trafford life ban

Serial sports prankster Karl Power has been banned from Old Trafford for life by Manchester United officials.

Power and nine friends fooled United security staff before Saturday's game with Liverpool into thinking they were part of an official pre-match sponsorship group.

The group, all wearing official Manchester United tops, got on the pitch and lined up for a photograph before making their way to the Scoreboard End of the ground.

They then re-enacted Diego Forlan's opening goal in the previous league game with Liverpool at Anfield.

The scorer was wearing a blond-wig, with the goalkeeper taking off his United shirt to reveal a Liverpool one, with 'Dudek' on the back, a reference to the Pole's blunder which gave the Uruguayan his tap-in.

Once they had completed their act, the group ran to the Liverpool fans, incensing them with their celebrations.

Greater Manchester Police arrested all 10 for "encroachment" although it is believed they could also face more serious offences. They have now been released on bail pending further enquiries.

Power's previous scams included lining-up alongside the United team ahead of a Champions League tie with Bayern Munich, walking out to bat during an England Test match, and knocking-up at Wimbledon during last year's tennis championship.

A club spokesman said: "Obviously this is a police matter now, so we cannot say too much. However, we are treating the incident very seriously and all 10 people involved will be banned from Old Trafford for life."

A brilliant moment in time . . . Two things stay in my memory;

(1) A Cole was nearly afraid to look beside him, he was trying to look at Power, but by moving his eye's as minimal as possible. :nervous:

(2) The look on Keano's face, his possible thoughts " who the f**k is yer man".

There was a TV documentry on him a while back, he is a funny bloke! He also got onto the Formula1 podium and celebrated as the winner!
I think United have been a bit harsh on him, I reckon a years ban would be more than a punishment for him as he is obviously a big United fan!
On a more serious side, he has also highlighted the poor security at sporting events around the world, if a prankster can stand alongside the team, just imagine what a terrorist could do?

bartez keeps givin' him the eye "ques que who"

life time ban seems harsh for a guy just takin' the piss.

Exactly, Its not like he has damaged anything, all he did was have a bit of a laugh and at the same time showing how poor the security is. Rather then punish him they should learn from him.

If a punishment must be dished out then a fine perhaps, or even a minimal ban...not a bloody life long ban to a supporter ! he bought all the kits for gods sakes !

IIRC he also strolled out as an England batsman at an Old Trafford test...

Anyone heard anything more about this guy?

Very harsh from OT giving him a lifetime ban for something that was so unthreatening.

I did something similar once and ended up having lunch with the team on tour. Security is a bit lapse i reckon, though you can see why the players get annoyed. Im no terrorist...and it didnt take much planning. But the next guy might be.

He's related to a mate of mine.

Nice bloke by all accounts. Good craic getting in the team photo.
