Television Anyone recommend me any TV Shows?

In truth, Mad Men is difficult to recommend to anybody because it's a bit of an acquired taste. Generally speaking, people initially find it dry and monotonous and I know of many that maintain that sentiment well into the second season before they finally give up. Because really, not much goes on in Mad Men but what is unique about it is that it is a bit of a character study of people, especially women, in the '60s.

Mad Men is top tier elect should it's final few seasons match the quality of the first four, as is Breaking Bad, in fact it doesn't actually have to match the quality, it could have a slight drop as most do, but it's pretty much stonewall in classic status.

Got a bit of everything in there, comedy, drama, cancelled shows, miniseries, theres plenty worth mentioning too as I haven't mentioned any culty shows as I don't think are consistent enough in terms of writing to be on this level despite how much I could be hooked to the likes of X-Files and BSG(and even to a lesser extent LOST, but I have never enjoyed them as much on DVD/Download rewatches, being involved in their run was part of the fun I think, I dunno.)

Seriously? 46 posts and not one nomination for Sons of Anarchy? Ignoring season 3 it's fecking brilliant.

Enjoying Homeland too.

Prison Break and Sons of Anarchy aren't even close to essential TV, especially when you are starting out.

I recently started watching Spooks, which I am now quite into and would recommend.

I'm 4 episodes into Season 3 of this. It's the bee's knees.

No Justified? Really?

Any good comedies people recommend? Parks and recreations?

Just finished watching the 4th season of breaking bad, have to say that it's easily the best show i have ever seen. Blown away! Have to wait till July for the season finale though

Just finished watching Sons of Anarchy which was pretty good but couldn't quite break into the elite group of The Sopranos, The Wire, The Shield and Breaking Bad. Need a new show now to watch along with the forthcoming 5th season of Breaking Bad. A US crime drama would do nicely so I'm thinking Southland. Would anyone recommend Southland? What about Deadwood or Mad Men like? Is Justified any good? Of course, it doesn't have to be crime drama- a comedy might be nice for a change.

You can watch the complete series of "I Claudius" on youtube now, as far as I'm concerned television peaked with this wonderful show. I'm not really one for re-watching things but I am halfway through my third viewing.

Utterly brilliant, certainly in the elite group you speak of. In my opinion it's probably more worthwhile than all of those shows bar The Sopranos.

Isn't 24 essentially right wing porn?

And season 2 is rubbish.

24 Season 1 is great TV, it's all downhill from there. That's a pretty shit list apart from a few.

Only just started watching Archer, it's great.

I've decided i'm going to add Game of Thrones to this list. Two seasons of brilliance is more than enough really, Mad Men season 5 continued to cements it's own greatness even further. I haven't really watched much else since I made this list, been busy and in one of those funks where I'm completely off watching new stuff really, happens. Though I'll find time for the Newsroom and Breaking Bad in the gaps that GoT and Mad Men have now left in my life for another year :'(

Anyone been watching Awake on Sky Atlantic? I caught the pilot which was pretty good. Got the rest on planner.

Among the most recent releases, Hatfields & McCoys mini series, starring Kevin Costner, Bill Paxton and Tom Berenger, are quite good.

The torrent is out, and subs are available. PM me who wants the link.

Why do people like curb your enthusiasm? Ive seen one and a half season and I think its terrible.. The plot lines are obvious and repetitive (its basically "Larry does something stupid / jerky and it hits him in the face later when someone else is being even more of a jerk about it")

Then theres just a huge amount of angry shouting back and forth which is just annoying because it lacks the realism and "I can relate to that" of George from Seinfeld or the funny ridiculousness of Its Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

Its basically "George from Seinfeld"^2 which makes it over the top and unfunny. And theres a lack of a diverse set of characters as well. DOes the show get better than it is halfway into season 2?

I love Seinfeld btw, so I find it strange that I just dont like curb at all because many people recommend it because they know I like Seinfeld.

How could you possibly get through 1 and a half seasons of something you think is terrible?

Larry has evolved as a writer since Seinfeld, the multi-tiered plots get more elaborate than they could be in a traditional sitcom format and he has so much more freedom. When he wrote that for network TV 'The Contest' was an idea most would not have been able to get made.

Whereas on HBO he can do this

Plus Jerry Seinfeld as a comedian is super clean, never swears or talks controversial subjects.. Curb is very much a reflection of David's comic mind (that we don't get to see since he no longer does stand up), while with Seinfeld it was really showcasing his writing talent in a more limited way.
