Antony | On loan to Real Betis

1 goal, 1 assist in his last 1000 minutes or so.

I think it was better when they were all buying into the hype. Don't think we're getting him off the books this summer with this drop off in productivity, and he's no better for the PL now than he was when he left.

So basically how be started here and then it all goes down hill?

Nah he's still constantly the highest or 2nd highest rated player for Betis. The poster you quoted is just sour

Betis transfer fees look gloom (for us).
30 mil euros is max fee which they paid for a player and it was Denilson decades ago. Since then they paid over 20 mil only two times (28 mil and 22 mil). When you count Antony wages in all that.....i don't think that they are potential buyers.

Great timing

We need to highlight him been not good enough before every game he plays

It says a lot when United only have a couple of fit attackers yet nobody mentions Antony or Rashy.

Glad he scored again, he needs to keep chipping in with a goal to get that permanent move in the summer!

Blimey. That was a world record transfer fee at the time!

During the period of no goals and assists, he averaged 3 key passes a game. However, the most notable example of his development has been his level of involvement. Instead of hugging the touchline and incessantly trying to cut in to have a shot on goal which was one of the main criticisms aimed his way by detractors as being one dimensional. Conversely, he's been a quasi-playmaker for Real Betis trusted by his teammates and coach to have large tactical influence. He's one of the go to players they look for, not only when they are being boisterous in the transition phase where they need players to make an appropriate decision for the collective, but also offering fluidity in possession when it comes to dealing with low blocks by acting as the connector in the build up play. If Brazil currently had a coach, I think the period in question where he didn't get a goal nor assist would've put him in very good standing for the next international call up.

If I was him, I would stay at Real Betis for another season and assess his options not from the biggest name making an offer, nor the ones offering the highest wages. But rather he needs to be incredibly selective in determining what side actually requires his skillset. This should be a given, but we see it all the time unfortunately .

Unpopular opinion but I think Antony is benefiting from the lack of physicality in the La Liga relative to the Premier League. If he comes back he will most likely disappoint.

Also…no coincidence that United perform better in Europe where there is more space than in the league. I think Amorim mentioned it too.

Isn't this the opinion of practically everyone on earth? what part is meant to be unpopular?

Hopefully, these performances will make another La Liga team with money take a punt on him. Anything upwards of Gbp 30m would be good for us.

It's internet tradition to pre-empt a sentence with 'unpopular opinion', before going on to give the most widely held opinion imaginable.

I'm happy for Antony, he seems to be enjoying life in Seville. He always had a good work ethic, I just don't think he had the physicality for the PL - even though I know that's an unpopular opinion.

Good goal and hope Betis can make it permanent. Seems so much more happier and looks to really be enjoying his football.

Why are people so salty about him? His time at United was about him not being good enough or having off field issues. ETH and the scouting department 100% to blame for him not being up to the levels.
Personally want him to be incredibly successful so we can get him off our books, yet seems to be a theme where people just want him to fail. Lads been playing well and is in a bit of a crap side, so isn’t going to score every week.

They might not be able to sign him but I assume the hope is that someone with enough money is interested enough following this move to then sign him

Athletico Madrid have been linked, I don't know how serious their interest is but if serious surely they can afford a 40 million fee. I think with the way his playing he won't lack suitors.

I'm not salty about him. Just calling it how I saw it. If anything I'm tired of the narrative that every player who leaves United is now flourishing just because they've scored a couple of times

Not that I'm advocating for him to return to United, but does anyone see him working as a right sided CAM? Physicality is obviously an issue with him, but he seems technical enough.

Depends on price really. At 15m there'll be plenty of suitors. At 30m, you might consider sending OM an email with links to his domestic violence accusations or something

I think if we sold Hojlund this summer to La liga or serie a, he’d look incredible again and everyone would be asking why we sold him and saying it was a mistake

Some players struggle with things here I think. Never thought Antony was a bad player, I just don’t think he ever settled. Hasn’t he already said in an interview that he feels more at peace and more left alone in Spain?

What a brilliantly taken goal, especially considering it's his right foot. Really happy for him, hope he gets a move this summer.

Far less pressure. I don’t think it’s necessarily the country per se, it’s that he’s at a club if he doesn’t score or play well - no one notices.

You are right, he’s not a bad player. He was a £20m pound squad player. Not a £90m player and our most expensive player.

Pleased for him. Good for everyone if he can move on.

Drives me mental, you literally see posts saying things like, “unpopular opinion: the sky is blue”. Seriously, what’s the point.

Sure, he has always been a (wide) midfielder. He only became a forward at Ajax, people judge him on his lack of goals but that's only something he developed later at Ajax.

He was mainly a playmaker (sometimes a braindead one), his speed and shooting caused him to play more up front. He is quite good in tight spaces, keeps the ball well (but can also lose it stupidly) and can create.

I would love to hear more of your unpopular opinions. Mine is that Hojlund is not playing very well

This would make so much sense for both parties. Antony is the archetypal Simone-Atletico player. Passionate, hard working, technical in small spaces with running power in open spaces and can chip in well on both end of the boxes.
