If we sign him for the reported price then there should be an investigation into why we are giving so much money to Ajax and Dortmund for their players.

The new Ajax manager is a bit weird

Not really what I expect from a club with such pedigree. He seems to have no idea how to handle the media which should ring alarm bells for the club.

Apparently, ETH was initially awkward with the media too. So maybe they see it as a sign.

We have had our fair share of media superstar managers at United.

He carries a certain resemblance to Squidward of Spongebob fame.

Oh my god I knew there some cartoon character I was thinking of when looking at him and couldn't think of it, this is it! absolutely spot on for him

No offence and disrespect to your team but when a club as big as us come and offer ridiculous money for one of your players then they aren’t gonna reject it. Would you say he’s worth 80m? I mean what did you pay for him was it 20m? Obviously you have sporting ambitions but they obviously don’t match Antony’s otherwise he wouldn’t be refusing to train to force through a move, it’s just the lure of the premier league and a giant club, that’s why a few players will leave CL clubs to join us in the Europa league.

This post really lacks self-awareness. RM or other clubs have done the same thing to us. How are you when the shoe's on the other foot?

What do you mean? When Real Madrid are always taking our player? A lot of players always dream of playing for Madrid like Ronaldo did but we didn’t stand in his way, we got a decent amount of money and let him go. It’s just one of them things… players have aspirations and they’ll find it hard to reject certain clubs, that’s just the way it is.

Gotta be honest, don't get the fascination EtH clearly has with Antony. That's a Pogba from Juve fee, and I certainly can't see that level of quality.

We need an attacker for sure, but if that giant fee was split into signing plus enormous wages for a more established star it feels less of a risk to me.

I think for all his talent, Pogba is a creative midfielder and there are many options in that position even if not as talented. Antony is a left footed pacy winger and there just aren’t very many of those at the moment. It’s supply and demand unfortunately. You rarely see top teams without a first team left footed wide player. We are addressing a genuine problem area with this signing.

Clearly, you have forgotten what it was like.

it doesn’t come out of their pockets

it never has and never will
It will /was not come from Glazer pockets, Manutd brand earning will pay own transfer fee, own salary and Tampa Bay Buccaneers salary

Agency theory. More money that goes into players => less money to distribute as dividends to the Glazers. Right now, they're taking 20-30m a year out of the club. This aspect will be cut out. There is cash leaking out of the club irrespective. It's a choice of that going into players to develop the club vs going into Glazer pockets.

If he can add more goals to his game, I think we are looking at a player who could be amongst the best in World football in his position. His ability in tight spaces is phenomenal, his passing is very underrated, he's got pace and he's a great ball carrier. Really could be an incredible signing if it works out.

At the same age Mahrez was playing in Ligue 2 and scored 8 goals in 2 seasons.

Salah was playing in Switzerland and scored 9 goals in 2 seasons.

Ronaldo was playing for us at 21 and wasn’t producing the numbers we know he can hit.

Antony has massive potential and I’m sure he will add goals to his gameplay in the coming years, trying to analyse stats of a 21-22 year old winger isn’t wise.

A year younger, Memphis scored 22 and assisted 6 in the Eredivise (plus 5g/1a in EL). Unfortunately, these comparisons mean nothing to predict an individual player's future

Difference is that no one paid £80m for those players at that time.

1. We are terminating a contract will be expired in 2027 which make the price higher up.
2. We are lack of that position in the team after Mason was unavailable and our attacking side is so thin
3. Our manager ETH want him to be there to play in the team.
4. He is a young and talented player who can play multiple years
5. We are in a most competitive league which hard to train up a player from young team to first team
6. We are still not a robot team to run the tactic who set from ETH, it makes difficult to absorb the fault from prospective, result is a necessary target for the manager
7. We are a inconsistent team who need to get the result first

Or we can try to buy 20 pretty young players who cost 5m per each then play them no matter what result or what situation to see who can come out. Then it will be most economical.

Why are so many people giving Ajax shit because they don't want to sell their best player 5 days before the end of the window? We did absolutely nothing for 3 months and now feel entitled to their squad because the sky is falling and we have money? Get a grip. They are in their right to not want to jeopardize their season and CL campaign. They can demand any fee they want. Or they can simply not sell at all.

And I can't say Antony's antics paint a pretty picture. Whose to say he won't to the same to us in 3 years when Madrid come calling?

Not very good examples, because
- Mahrez then went to Leicester for £0.44M
- Salah then went to Chelsea for £13.9M

You could add hundreds of the same caliber that had potential but never reached it. No one knows their names, because they went incognito after a £5M transfer to a big club.
If you splash record sums on pure potential, it can get ugly.

I'm not saying Antony is shite because he hasn't got the numbers, but I think there is a limit. He's not a 100M player, I'd back out of it or stay with that offer.
Ajax won't get a higher fee from anywhere. And they don't want keep an unhappy man.

True, only thing that matters is skillset of the player and what he can bring to this team.

Looking forward to him coming to United. Will add another dimension to our attack and create competition for places among our attackers. The added bonus is ETH already knows his game and of course Antony really wants to come to United.

A very long reply to a simple subject :wenger:
He hasn't done enough to justify that price tag.....simple as that!

There's an article on SkySports by Tim Vickery, who's their South American correspondent. He says ETH is so dialed in on him because he spent a significant amount of time developing him from a raw talent with too much showboating to someone with more sharper skills conducive to better end product and he won't walk away from that when they are still in such early stages of his career. The relationship reminds me a bit of Fergie and Ronaldo.

All of you being worked up over the fee, just give up. We have only ourselves to blame, and it's been happening for years with these idiots in charge. Everybody knows that they will extract 30 in addition from our incompetent management. Let's just hope they don't bring this club down with their reckless spending.

We did big for him before but Ajax have always wanted a pretty high price. As for his antics, thats just the nature of the game. We are higher up in the food chain than Ajax.

Man, From a purely footballing perspective Greenwood has cost us a lot in future spend. All of this drama would have been unnecessary if he wasnt an idiot.

I will never understand why we didn’t move for him as soon as the season was over. He was clearly on our list. He was always one of our priority signings. That was the time where we could have got him for 50-60m maximum before Ajax got all the money in after selling their players.

But we got told by club briefings that we were focused on FDJ first before we move on to other targets. That really worked out well. Now we have to pay this obscene fee and that’s our punishment. We must get him even at that price now. The kick in the stomach is we won’t be able to afford anyone else after him because of our astute strategy.

Not only we would have saved money and had started the season better if we had got Antony earlier but also it deflates the optimism and excitement when you conduct your transfer business like that. Having said that, just get it done now and get it over with.

It's a deal that could have been sought back when Ten Hag was announced if the Glazers weren't being tight bastards

Oddly quiet yesterday, this one.

Were Ajax supposed to be training yesterday? Did he show up?

He didn't train, but he did show up. He gets fined if he doesn't.

Does not look like Ajax with get Ziyech, so thats a bit of a problem

If we really had gone big for him he'd be here already. We could have pushed hard with 70M plus Laird, or Diallo, or Elanga, or whatever. We didn't. We pulled out and that was that. Then we got wrecked by Brighton and Brentford and found 100M lying around. And now suddenly Ajax should simply bow to our will and sell? Nah, man. Imagine if Real Madrid or PSG could simply stroll in and take our best players whenever they desire. It'd suck and we'd be up in arms. Ajax have all the leverage and we have none. Antony would never throw his toys out of the pram right before the WC, so they can also rely on him putting in shifts. If this falls through, we only have ourselves to blame.

Are you really naive enough to think the market works this way?
It is really simple mate,
If someone wants to buy my house and I don't want to sell it then to ward of interest I will ask for a ridiculous price...maybe twice it's value but if the person still wants to buy it then the person is either an idiot or he just has money to burn.

We did, but Ajax always asked for £70-90m which we obviously said was too much at that point.

Unfortunately they haven't backed down so we are in the same situation.

they did train and he didn't go.

This narrative that we would've gotten him for ~50m if we moved earlier seems super weird when it was widely reported that they demanded more or less the same amount they're quoting us now at the start of the window

The root cause is always the Glazers. Until they go and the right type of ownership comes in and appoints the right people for the jobs, we'll always overpay for targets in transfer fees and salaries, and not get a thing in return when we try and sell players.

Rangnick was the only hope so far of changing it but the Glazers didn't want what came with it. They didn't want to make 8, 9 or 10 signings and the proof is in the pudding as they've only made 4 signings with a possible one or two more left in the window.

We are 100% in agreement with the bolded part.

Thing is, a house could be just a normal house to you, but for me it carries special value. So I will offer more. That doesn't make me an idiot. I just want it more. You cannot judge the other buyer, because you have no idea what the motivation is behind the purchase. So to say "an investigation needs to be launched" is just a bit silly, imo. Anyway, all good ;)

Rangnick was a bluffer. A charlatan. Did you see the prices of the targets he supposed recommended? Absolute joke

For the Ajax fans who see Antony regularly. What aspect of his game frustrates you, could be technical, physical, tactical or maybe attitude flaw.
@AjaxCunian

Where would he need to take big steps to become an elite wideman.

Alvarez and Laimer? How much was Nkunku before his contract renewal? Forgot if he had a release clause. To be fair I don't know his full list of targets, but it would be foolish to think his directory was limited to 3-4 names.
