I think Ten Hag is making a big mistake here. Only looks in the Eredivisie, which is called a farmer league by many of you here. The league isn't that bad in my opinion but it's certainly not great either. Now you have 4 (!) Eredivisie players that cost around 230 million. That's insane actually and I doubt these are the players United needed. I seriously fear for Ten Hag's position if you look at the upcoming matches. I think he's a brilliant coach so I hope he can show England what he's made off but he's making a classic new trainer mistake here. We will also have reduced the wage bill by 60m when Ronaldo leaves plus an additional 25% cut on top. So no, there is no world that exists where Chelsea can outspend us based on their club income - they were over a billion in debt under Roman and made 250m losses the last 3 years. The answer to the question is their owners have taken out a big fat huge loan to buy their fans love. Our owners are under enormous pressure and if they do intend to sell will want to do so from a position of strength - that isn’t having to make Old Trafford look like Fort Knox to stop games being called off. What if he ends up a slightly better version of Chong; tricky, skilful and lightweight with shit decision making in the final third? Chong can be benched if he’s shit, at €100m Antony is playing regardless of how he does. He’ll have the press and all the oppo fans and social media after him if he doesn’t hit the ground running at that fee.
I’m very willing to sign him up but the fee makes a massive difference in more ways than one, we should be walking away from this deal and working on it for next season at a much more reasonable price if EtH really wants him.
Yep, that's the concern because you're talking about RVP or RVN level players generally and I doubt all four will transition well. Just hope Antony doesn't end up a Kezman or Depay. It is an incredible sum of money, but that's late window panic buying gets you.

This is the same talk that got this club to 1bn spent on players and the same talent at disposal as Brighton. 87m for Maguire (why would you care), 59m euros on Fred (why would you care?), 67.5m on Martinez (why would you care?), DVB for 39m and the list goes on and on and just more depressing.

Paying this amount of money for both Gakpo and Antony, means that they'll have to deliver straight away. You're not going to pay 150 million quid for two players that need plenty of time for adjustment. After the struggles that Van de Beek, Ziyech, Dest and to a lesser extent De Jong and De Ligt have going from top tier Eredivisie to top tier European teams, I am becoming more and more doubtful if these players will bridge the step easily. Also, the mark that Ten Hag is making on our transfer window is too much, merely scouting players from his network confirms that we lack a creative and resourceful scouting department ourselves.

Why do we care? Because especially in our situation you need to be effing meticulous on what you spend it on. We're not in the situation that we have the 'pull factor' at the moment, players don't want to come to United because of the nice vibes that are surrounding our club. We've got a horrendous track record of expensive signings that haven't delivered anything. Being so indifferent about large spendings is the nail in the coffin of our club, we haven't got unlimited resources and paying this amount of money on a winger who has, at best, mediocre stats in the Eredivisie would be ludicrous.

I think if it turns out to be a mistake, it is on John Murtaugh more than Ten Hag. It’s up to him to have a structure regarding who decides targets, and to provide alternatives. Ten Hag, like any manager, will suggest players he know because he has seen them up close.

The only problem with price tags, is the influence of flocks of sheep who think the price tag is relevant to the player once it’s already paid. You keep saying that, but you know it matters because this isn't sustainable burning all that money. It is the money of the club, so it does matter if you have a short term vision like this where you overpay for players that are a bit of a gamble.
