Antonio Rüdiger

Hes 28... probably got this contract (5 years?) - and a contract renewal / extension at 31 with then perhaps one more deal to carry on longer fitness depending etc

Hes on about 5 million a year isnt he (100K) so round half of what maguire is on ...does not seem unreasonable he wants more given he might assess his options

Madrid would be interesting with him and Alaba you would think they would need to play back three (presumably with Militao) which would seem to suit him... Carvajal and Mendy at wing backs ... that would be a pretty solid base to build from (presumbly with Mbappe rocking up there in the summer)

Madrid could sign Rudiger, Mbappe and Pogba on a free this summer... That'd be criminal, especially if they can win the race for Haaland

But you have Militao and Alaba and Mendy at LB. Who's the odd man out?

Back 3 probably, as sun-tzu mentioned. I don't know if Carlo likes that system though. There were also rumours about Militao not being entirely happy. He was being linked with different clubs not that long ago, so who knows.

Really dirty player, but clever about it and rarely gets sent off. Sort of player I'd love to wipe out, he absolutely deserves it.

Same old cliche - you'd love him if he was on your team.

That's exactly what he's after. His current wage is in the bottom 20% at the club I think and he rejected an offer of around £170k a week. He wants something north of £200k a week. I think the club should compromise a little here but it seems like the Chelsea aren't going to.
Who’s your highest earner at the moment? Kante? Lukaku? Do you have many over the 200k mark?*

* = as far as we know, anyway. Football contracts are always complete guesswork/ballpark figures

According to Spotrac, Lukaku is way out on his own at £325k.

2. Kante £290k
3. Werner £272k
4. Saul £198k

Then a bunch of players between £150k and £190k.

Rudiger is all the way down at £100k.

If the stats are correct then the last time was in the 16/17 season when he was at Roma. So sending offs are really a complete non-issue for him.

And if he is asking for 200k pw then this is completely reasonable imho.

Surely wages would be the issue here??
Well no. See, Marcelo, Bale and Isco will be gone. Stadiums have reopened(hopefully they will STAY open) and we're currently projecting A LOT of money to spend next summer

That's what I'm saying.. it's not an issue for him but he's one of the dirtiest players currently playing the game imo.

Looks like Wenger was right when he said players were going to start running their contracts down (those three) or wanting to sign shorter ones (Christensen).

It's a risk isn't it, stay fit and on form it could pay off. Any injuries or dips and suddenly you've shafted yourself.

It's more to do with Covid than anything else. Botrh Chelsea and United have offered take it or leave contracts to Rudiger and Pogba respectively. They don't believe better contracts are available elsewhere for them. Christensen wants a shorter contract because he doesn't want to get locked into a Covid era contract longer term. Hedging his bets that in a few years finances will have recovered.

It's not a surprise really.

Transfer fees have become so inflated that moving club is practically impossible now. Clubs refuse to sell unless they're going to lose a lot of money, as a player you're better winding it down - getting offers elsewhere then using it as leverage.

It's up to the clubs to start selling players more often or for fairer prices. I expect players pushing for free agency more often will help balance the market out.

Pogba looks shafted by it. It seems his options have narrowed completely and his (and Raiola's) dream of crazy money in his last big contract seems to have gone up in smoke.

It's the Mail, so you know, apply your appropriate levels of salt.

The 4 clubs cited in this report are PSG, Real Madrid Juventus and Bayern.

Safe to say that if Marina is too stingy to extend Rüdiger, the rift with Tuchel will be opened and only be widening.
Be prepared for a change in attitude towards passive-aggressiveness and a slow but steady deterioration of performances.

Was Rudiger always this good or did he go up a level when playing in a back 3?

He fluctuated between pretty good and pretty average before Tuchel got hold of him. He's been world class for us ever since. Probably the back 3 that's helped. He doesn't look nearly as dominant for Germany.

I'm not entirely sure why Real Madrid want to buy Rudiger. I would think we need a younger CB, not a guy in his prime. We're going to buy this guy to bench our 50m, 24-year-old CB who is playing very well after finally getting minutes?

Not going to happen, but a back 3 of Alaba, Militao and Rüdiger would be fantastic

Rudiger is a leader and has a personality that is indispensable at this Chelsea.
But unfortunately Chelsea's problem goes well beyond Rudiger.
We are currently with 4 CB ending contracts in the summer.
This will not only be a problem for next season, as there is already a risk that this instability will kill the team in the coming months.

I would honestly renew Christensen and Rudiger but if we're not renewing them for whatever reason, bring in 2 new players already in January.

Christensen and Silva have as good as renewed. Not sure about Azpi.

Kounde will happen either in January or the summer.

3 at the back also opens the possibility to play Benzema and Mbappe in a front 2.

Ok.

We're going for him whether or not Rudi extends (we nearly signed him last summer as well). He's the long term Silva replacement.
Ok that makes sense.

I'm not sure the club is looking for a Rudiger clone.
No but it has served Tuchel really well having a fast and aggressive CB.
But like @duffer said you are buying him even if Rüdiger stays or not.

Alaba and Rüdiger are basically playing the same position: LCB in a back 3.
Playing one of them centrally would rob him of some of his assets.

Just play one of them centrally, problem solved
Not really, as both have the ability to move forward/outward. This a only possible when you have someone like Silva on the center who keeps everything organised. Playing Alaba and Rüdiger together means one of them must lose a bit of his strength.

Bayern refused to pay a similar amount to Alaba, it would be strange that they now paid even a little more to Rudiger, but it may be that they have decided to change their salary policy.

Real Madrid is extremely solid with Alaba and Militão in defense, 2 players that were strong bets by the club and Rudiger today would not have guaranteed a place in the starting eleven, Real Madrid will not change the scheme for him.

It will be a good market opportunity for several clubs but I don't know if, apart from the economic situation, this exit will be good for Rudiger.

I heard several times that he didn't want to leave London and here he is adored by fans. Think carefully about what you're going to do, Rudiger.

Do Real Madrid play with a back 3? If they don't, I can't imagine they'll be changing the formation just to accommodate Rudiger, that seems a stretch.
Don't think they do. As opposed what's been claimed here, Alaba plays left CB in a pairing, not a three man defense (at Bayern too). Don't see why Rüdiger shouldn't be able to play right-sided CB though?

Personally, I think it's weird that Chelsea don't get him to extend.

No, we're going to bench the 26 year old 50m LWB who is playing well but is just not as good as Alaba or Rudiger
