Personally I’d rather not see any stats than see them thrown about without the proper context.

Sure, everyone does, but the context was whether he could continue what he has done in his best seasons, and in that regard its interesting to match it with his xG season by season, wouldnt you agree?

Context of playing mins was missed in the post. He outperformed his xg by bigger margin in 2019-20 as he played 2600 mins, compared to his usual 1500 mins per season.

His (Goals - expected goals) per 90 mins

2017-18 - 0.09
2018-19 - 0.22
2019-20 - 0.24
2020-21 - -0.15
2020-22 - 0.25

His finishing is consistent.

even better, cheers - what source?

Trajectory: I'm not sure you really looked at this. Martial started okay (1 season), he largely dropped off other than 2019-20. Whereas Marcus has increased each year, with Martial only out preforming Marcus in two seasons (in goal terms). Martial has only once gone above 20 goals per season. One of the most glaring issues with Martial is his overall contribution tackles, blocked shots, interceptions. clearances, head clearances and assists. They aren't anywhere near what Marcus contributes. In other words, Martial scores less and contributes less defensively. We've seen that many times on the pitch. That trajectory hasn't changed for Martial it, it's his goals that have decreased or maybe hit his level of around 10 per season. That is his bread and butter for his job and he just doesn't do enough, never has really.

The comparison with Shaw is somewhat impossible to comprehend give Shaw had such a bad injury.

Im not disagreeing that Martial has been underwhelming....should have been shown the door long ago.

But Rashford has increased each year? In our worst ever season, he was easily our worst player, his performances and noises coming from off the pitch were terrible. I get the slating of Martial, I dont get the back of Rashford as a player here, he is talented but its hardly like has shed the world alight here either, again he has only had one good season in several. There are lots of better players in the England team let alone outside the country in his position.

As for Shaw, I am still a fan of his, though I think his positioning is poor I still think he has what it takes, but on the same token, yes it was a horrific injury, but its time we stop making that as an excuse for his performances now, its a long time ago and he showed he was over the injury before the season just gone.

All three for me are to be bandied in the same bracket....yet another last chance saloon....AGAIN. Its only that they are in positions we are pretty weak yet have several players to move on that they are still here.

Gets a lot of stick on the caf but I've always thought he could be great for us with a manager that motivates him properly. Has all the tools for it and showed it that one season under Ole.

Fully back onboard. Martial FC members, can I be allowed back in?

He's going to start the season as the main striker, good luck to him

He seems hungrier than I've seen him in a while, even if you can take nothing from friendlies.

It's obvious to anyone that he has bags of talent. The question marks have always been about his application and attitude. Maybe ETH will be the right manager to unlock his potential. It was clear as day that he had no desire to play under Ole, despite his initial good form.

This is it. He can be class when he wants to be, he just doesn't/hasn't had the right attitude to date and has been rightly criticised for it

Ookay, he's definitely cooking something  If he keeps this up for competitive matches Ronaldo will be pushed out

He’s still crap let’s be honest. Such clumsy dribbling, just runs into the defender more often than not.

His attitude, work rate etc. has deservedly been called out. However, people making him out to be a poor player are wide of the mark.

I can't really blame him finding application difficult under Ole, and he certainly wasn't the only one. His lack of effort wasn't good enough, but we can now see that the players didn't exactly love playing under Ole.

Still more impressed with his work rate than what he's doing on the ball, but I suppose it's because 1 is expected whilst his work rate has always been a massive question mark

He’ll always look better in a team than in a team full of individuals, where everyone is trying to shine and go for glory.

Would fill a massive hole in the squad if we can get LVG Martial back - I guess it's possible he needs a possession-based manager to shine after playing under three 'get the ball forward as quickly as possible' merchants in a row.

Will be fully expecting the return of can't be arsed Martial as soon as he has an excuse for his head to drop, though.

He isn't even doing anything special. Just don't be a dick and spend the whole gam camping at the far post like build up is beneath you. Talking about Ronaldo here.

He's already developed a really good understanding with Sancho.

Confidence player. I really really like him when he's on song. I hope he'll start the season up front for us.

He is pressing harder than Rashford, not that it's saying much. Looking hungry with shit to prove.

His quality has never been a worry for me its his attitude.. as long as Ten Hag can keep him happy and motivated he'll be brilliant for us. Just hope we don't have another Cavani situation if/when Ronaldo comes back and Tony automatically gets booted out.

He's been brilliant so far pre season.

Considering ETHs tactics I'm not surprised.

We'll never get that version back, that guy already looked like one of the best dribbles in the league at 19 and we haven't seen that aspect in his game for a long time now.

Our best hope is he gets his 19/20 form back with the added bonus of being under a much better manager.

Is it allowed to say he's been pretty good in preseason without someone jumping on that comment?

Apparently not. As if we've all suddenly forgotten he was poor last year. We're more interested in the here and now.
