No idea what game people were watching but he was rubbish again, so what if he holds the ball up and does a few lay offs, he is in the team to score goals and he’s not doing that. He’s getting chances and wasting them.

just about anyone would be an upgrade this window.

The attack as a whole almost always functions better with him there because of his all-round game. It creates space and opportunities for the others. Ultimately he needs to be doing that AND scoring goals which he hasn't done the last few games, but not scoring goals doesn't automatically make him rubbish.

It's also worth noting that he's had five goals and two assists in just over seven games worth of minutes this season.

I see people cant come to an agreement whether he played solid or not. For me personaly it doesnt matter, Martial can play like prime Ronaldo all he wants, but the fact is that next injury is around the corner. I would keep Martial if hes happy to be a squad player, aka benchwarmer, anything higher than that I would sell.

He's in the team to help the team be more cohesive in attack, and increase our general quality of play, create more chances as a team, etc.

Saying "he is a forward, he is in the team to score goals" is such a 20th century line of thinking for forward and so far off the truth. Like yeah we can and need to upgrade, but it is also not so easy to upgrade on him and costs a hell of a lot of money. His hold up play and link up play really is valuable, and he did it pretty well today, even if he was missing some chances. That's a net positive to our game still.

What Ronaldo did in his second stint at United, even last season when he was scoring, was a net negative. He did feck all off the ball, feck all to help the rest of the team in general play, swallowed up every attack just to increase his own shot stats. And so we struggled as a team.

Guy has landed on his feet coming back from that failed loan at Sevilla, to only having a stroppy manchild as his only competition for the striker position.

We need to sell him once an for all this summer, no matter if we only bring in one striker this summer.

Should get Kane/Osimhen and Thuram to replace him in the summer, however gut feeling is Thuram will join someone else in January

So you would be ok with Depay or Aboubakar if that's the way Erik wanted to go then because I back him all the way

Really connects well with Rashford - felt he had a good first half but he really should have scored at least one of them. Poor second half though.

His all round game is good but his finishing has declined since his younger years. I used to have full confidence in him scoring or coming very close from every good chance which is no longer the case.

Was pretty decent but needs to start banging them in again.
I don't know why his shooting never has any real fizz to it. Earlier he was a specialist at those one on one chances but you'd think over time he'd develop his ball striking from various ranges and sadly it hasn't happened

Can he stay in the team after this season for his all round game but pretty poor finishing

Yes I think he's more than good enough for us. He makes us better in fact. Good enough to start for our ambitions is a big question mark but we are a WIP too

His biggest achievement would be winning the most flavor of the month awards on redcafe.

We need Sancho to come back soon so we can finally plan on moving him.

Sorry, but this is the problem. Martial was rubbish. And some fans actually think he improves how we play. How on Earth you can draw that conclusion on either his current or historical form is beyond me.

He is a mid-table team No 9, at best. He doesn't work hard, isn't clinical. Isn't prolific. Isn't consistent. Isn't reliable. Isn't inspiring.

Ans his hold up play is nothing special.

This is an average footballer, and there is a reason why ETH is seeking a replacement.

Martial will score a few goals, one or two will look great. And that's it. Because that's who he is.

Manchester United should do better at No 9 and there seems to be a consensus on that within the coaching staff.

I would like Sancho back, so he can rotate with Rashford through the middle, because either of those are better than Martial.

The conclusion I came up with last night is that Martial has had his chance and never takes it. I’ve watched him and been a fan of his since day one. I thought this kid has got something.

He’s not that kid now. He’s near his peak and he might on the odd occasion look special but it is in that odd occasion. I guess it shows where our standards are at.

Over the years we’ve had Cole, Yorke, Sheringham, solkskjaer, Van Nistelrooy, Hughes, Rooney, Tevez, Berbatov, McClair, Cantona, Ibrahimovic, Hernandez, Berbatov and Ronaldo up top. Hands down right now I’d take any of them in their peak over Martial.

Would you take our Angolan legend Manucho over him ? Seriously though agree with you except maybe chicha whose finishing was tiers above Martial but I dont think his overall play was better than him. Berba is a 50/50 for me because of the style of football we are playing now. ETH would gone berserk seeing him strolling in the pitch

We are after a striker because Martial is the only one we've got. Ultimately we probably need two (yes, one a replacement) because Martial can't stay fit. He has also been historically inconsistent. But when on form he's very good.

If you've watched us over the last few years and not noticed how our entire attack (and largely our entire team) simply plays better when Martial is fit and in form, I'm not sure what you've been watching. Now, I'm certainly not saying that's only due to Martial being amazing or anything. It's partly due to him being good at knitting the play and creating chances and openings for others, but it's also partly due to the utter incompetence of any of our other strikers to do it. That includes Rashford who is terrible at striker (albeit he has shown signs of some improvement lately).

I thought he played ok. Not fantastic, not rubbish. But ok. I saw some good holdup play, some nice skill, some good pressing, desire to get in the right positions. On the downside I would say that he missed a couple of half chances.
We all know that he is not Harry Kane but then again there are very few of them around, some of the names that people are throwing out there are absolutely not guaranteed to improve us. There are only three strikers that would come with a guarantee, Lewa, Haaland and Kane, and we are not getting any of them.
So we are better off supporting the best option we have at the moment. We know that we need more strength in numbers and I am sure that the club is trying to do what they can to sort that out.

Move Martial on and bring in two strikers. I thought he played well yesterday as he has this season but he is not reliable and has always been inconsistent.

No one will pay a decent fee for him. Hopefully we can find someone to supplant him now (Felix) but unfortunately I am not optimistic. He will definitely be a squad option next season though. Going nowhere on those wages.

I thought he was complaining about his groin as he was coming off. Anyone else see that?

I'm surprised to see the replies in this thread. I thought he was terrible. Again.

I really can't believe it's his 8th season here and we still hope that by some miracle, he will become a World Class player.
He has talent but it only emerges from time to time, I have lost hope he can be good for us. ETH just does not have a better solution and plays whoever is available at this moment.

Would lose his place to a decent striker right away. I guess he will he sold in summer. Finally

What’s really annoying is he is very rarely in the box or if he is is is right on the edge. The amount of times we have hit the byline and there is no one around the 6 yard box. He stand still too much in the box when he finally gets in there so is rekey an option for the tap ins that you want your Striker getting.

He played pretty well but has to be putting away some of those half chances. As usual he gets judged by different metrics though compared to most players. He’s not liked by a good portion of Utd fans.

Perhaps he's not liked because for many of the years he's been a United player, he's been a sulking knob head who hasn't bothered to put in any effort. Just a thought

Chica looked spent under Van Gaal but before that he was great for us. The thing about Berbatov was he was so talented he made everything look easy and therefore it made him look lazy. He was an incredibly intelligent player.
Reminds me I’d probably even take a peak Tevez despite hating him.

He hasn’t watched us. Or doesn’t have a working brain. Because it’s clear as day how much more cohesive we look pretty much any time Tony starts, even before ETH got here that was clear. And if anyone actually listened to the manager, they’d no ETH loves him and isn’t looking to “replace him” as much as get another player that actually plays the position so our other option is t shunting our top class LW to striker. He literally praised Martial for his movement, pressing, and hold up play yesterday.

Ah yes he’s the only one who’s ever looked lazy at the club. Not the star man to the left of him that just last year was getting hate mail for his performances

And people have been upset he didn’t smile much even when he was a teenager carrying us to an FA Cup
