We all know theres a quality player in there. Hopefully he clicks with Ten Hag and get some motivation back.

That's it. He hates competitors. He wants to be the main man and he did do well as a 9 before Cavani was signed.

Is there stats for this? Interesting if true

Was just a feeling but ran a comparison on fbref.

We actually scored more points and goals, when he was on the pitch in 20/21 than with Cavani. That is despite Martial being in poor goal scoring form, and by all accounts Cavani had a good season individually.

He needs to recover his finishing touch. He was once a very reliable finisher, but that deserted him in 20/21. His all-round game was actually still very good
He's purely a confidence player. If he can get his head straight and have the desire, he will do great.

It's no coincidence that his best season came when Ibra left and we gave him the 9 shirt and said you're our guy.

Maybe this time away from United will have done him some good, sometimes a fresh start elsewhere can give you perspective.

Sadly I think this is true of both him and Rashford (Rashford's best season coming when Ole treated him like a talisman, put him on pens ect.)

Both very talented but so far too inconsistent to build around long term.

Hopefully having a coach that sets up a system to make it slightly easier for them to know what they are supposed to do will make a big difference.

We've sort of created their weak mentalities by showering them with praise and responsibility too young, and giving them zero competition to earn their places.

Rashford especially feels entitled to be the man because we've built him up as this homegrown hero. It just breeds complacency.

Martial was sort of the opposite, whenever he's got momentum going he's been cockblocked. First Sanchez, then Ibra, then Cavani and now Ronaldo.

I get he's not and probably ever will be a world class 9, but he showed a good enough level in his peaks. It was always consistency with him, but he does need to deal with challenges better.

Ole pampered Rashford far too much. Big contract, played every game regardless of form and was allowed to do zero defensive work. That’s how PSG treat Neymar for feck’s sake.

In 20/21 Martial's finishing was poor but his overall game was good or at least good enough. It's last season that he was poor in every ways possible, I have wondered about whether his knee injury played a role in it or maybe it was coincidental but people tend to forget that he did sustain a big knee injury in 2021.

Who is this that’s replaced the original Martial?

Big hopes for him. I know it will end up in misery but I can't help myself.

Martial FC we're eating good again!

I never lost faith in my guy!

Killer finish that, hopefully that's a sign he's regained his finishing touch

An in form Martial will make for a good option to have up top. But we can't him going into a spell where nothing comes off. If he works hard and links up well he'll he useful.

Pleasing to see how hard Martial is working out of possession. Obviously, with all the usual caveats. However, he's clearly taking on board what he's been asked by the coaches. That's a good start.

He's won the ball back multiple time, been involved with the pressing and containing. Along with some decent movement.

He annoyed me a little not moving for Bruno, who'd picked the ball in the area on the left and gave him no option. But then he hits a Martial classic goal.

He's looked good.

Great to see from a lad many have called 'semi-retired'. Would be so delighted to see him have a strong season as the vitriol towards the man for losing form hasn't been nice to see.

He is very suitable for the one touch lay off football we saw before Fred's goal

I said it before, when it came to link up play/false 9 position martial was the best we had at it. Will not be surprised if EtH likes him and that in turn motivates him to kick on.

He just want to feel loved!!

A running Martial is always a good player. The question is if he will keep doing it?

This is the first time he’s been under a proper coach since 2016, and having a proper pre season hopefully means he will hit the ground running, fecks know we need it with the Ronaldo situation.

Big fan of the talent/player, not quite Martial FC level but, think even his staunchest supporters would be very pessimistic about him doing it every game. He is one of many players if he showed mental toughness/desire every game even when things aren't going good, would be one of the top forwards in football today.

Always hold out some hope - especially considering how bare we are right now for strikers.

I never bought the mental toughness or Martial being afraid of competition, people keep repeating this and they're 100% wrong about it. He proved it to me during the Mourinho years where he was becoming an after-thought and ended up forcing his way back to the starting line-up, despite Ibra, despite Sanchez coming in when he was in good form and shifting him to the bench after a stint on the right to accommodate the Chilean.

But I do think Martial is lazy, I don't think he takes very good care of himself, I don't know if he's improved this specific aspect of his career but he was a poor trainer back in France, and he's been handed a big fat long-term contract for....what? Being inconsistent and doing what I consider to be average in comparison to his talent. So I don't know how much of a motivating factor this season is going to be, or a new coach, I hope he kicks on, but I think he's just never put himself on a forward trajectory in his career, and I'll be pleasantly surprised if he decides to do that this season and onwards.

No beating around the bush, he did well today. If this is a sign of things to come then I think he could be a big help to us this season.

Knew this thread was getting bumped today! A long way back for him but he has to do this in every game he plays between now and January to win us over again

In all seriousness, he is 100% better to play with for Rashford, Bruno and Sancho than Ronaldo up top. He's always had good hold up and link up play, needs to stay fit, motivated, and who knows. Might yet make it work.
