Was just a poor joke, but I feel his dribbling never seemed to be under control. Just a sequence of the ball bouncing off his legs which lead to him eventually beating his man.

To be fair though, there are many players dribbling like that, so it's not to say he's poor at it, just not very clean. Maybe the bounces stopped coming off?

He was a fantastic dribbler because he kept the ball so close to his feet.

Once he gets his confidence, I’m sure we’ll see more of it again

He's been great, but I genuinely wonder what happened to his dribbling ability. He used to beat players for fun. Now, he never really wants to take anyone on (even when he drifts out wide), and, when he tries to, he isn't as successful as he used to be.

I think the last time he was consistently beating people was in José's first season. I don't think it's about being a CF these past few seasons as, again, even when he drifts out wide he doesn't attempt any dribbles, and when you think back to him as our CF under van Gaal, he was still doing it there.

I don't know if it's related but I feel bulking up affected his dribbling ability.

Also when Mourinho came, he gave him less freedom which wasn't the case under LVG who let him do whatever he wanted in the final third. That saw his dribbling drop down quite a bit in his 2nd season.

Let's face it, if ETH can get Rashford and Martial back to form it would be like two new signings. I remember the one game Martial came on under Rangnick and he decided it, one hell of a player.

I remember that dribble against Real, remarkable ability.

Can’t wait for next season… an inform martial is lethal! His dribbling is insane when he’s at his best. Him and rashford link up very good and add sancho to that..: that is a lethal front 3.

Martial is as good as any footballer when he's on form, how's he's managed fitness wise and the personal relationship between him and the manager would determine how much we get out of him.
He does need to take responsibility as well, try to keep his head up when things aren't going his way, if he can then we may have to pay Monaco a little fee ;)

Insane amount of optimism in here for a bloke who's had 3 decent pre season games against some reserve sides.

He's gone missing for the best part of two years.

He seems highly motivated and determined to make the most of what appears to be his last chance at the club.

Long may it continue.

Maybe half a season at a middling club like Sevilla made him realise he should actually put the work in to try and stay at a bigger club. We'll see at the end of the season.

Weird how he started smiling and pressing after the Ronaldo stuff came out

There were periods where it seemed almost too easy for him to dribble past defenders. Let's hope he can get it back because I think his dribbling was world class when in form (and no, I'm not suggesting he was a world class player at the time before anyone comes at me).

He certainly does have the technical ability to run at speed with close control dribbling. His dribbling style reminds me a lot of R9 where it was constant touches of the ball without it moving too far away from the body.

He just needs to improve his decision making and end product at the end of the dribble. He certainly has the ability to do it though. Hopefully ETH style which presents multiple options in attacks will help.

Let's hope the penny has finally dropped. He's been terrible for extended periods, mostly due to what seems a lack of effort. An in form Martial is hard to beat. Im hopeful we see a good season from him.

My biggest worry right now is that he has an excellent pre-season, Ronaldo comes in and immediately starts ahead of him, leading to him dropping his head.

Although I’d love Martial to smash it this season, I still think it’s a huge gamble if we go into the season with not only him as our only main striker but also the number 1 option. It is more hope than expectation that he finds the form he had under Ole’s first full season. However, we can’t forget that it’s been 8 years he’s been here with the majority of it underwhelming. Let’s hope ETH can work his magic.

He's an almost flawlessly talented footballer who plays in a position that we are a little light.

It stands to reason that fans are going to keep a sliver of hope that he can move past any issues.

He's too talanted to not get your hopes up even if you know it might make you look silly in 6 months time.

The one against Madrid is one of the best 5 - 10 seconds of close control that I've ever seen.

Have we all forgotten that he wanted out of the club at any cost until his disastrous sevilla spell left him with nowhere to go?

To be honest, this is not unheard of where a player ends up staying and still performing. I think a lot of the current players have been pleasantly surprised by ETH’s small time he’s been here.

Bernardo has been wanting to leave city since last summer. In the end he ended up staying and being one of their best players all season.

I want him to do well dont get me wrong. Had he been a bit better on loan or in general in recent years we would have found a buyer and he would already have left by now.

His issues have never been with ability but purely his mentality. It’s not impossible for people to literally wake up the next day after being in dire depression and decide to change their lives for the better so we can’t rule out the fact that our manager is pushing the right buttons and we truly are seeing a happier and more focused Martial. We can’t forget the past but we should be looking towards the future and hopefully he continues with whatever is working for him.

I’m not actually sure what happened to him at Sevilla. I didn’t watch any of his games. But I was surprised to hear he struggled as I expected him to excel in La Liga as I thought it suited him more. I’m guessing he wasn’t mentally up for it as that’s always been the challenge with Martial. I remember when we signed him one of his coaches at Monaco said something along the lines of “We have no doubt Martial can be one of the best players in the world. The only concern with him is his mental state and application”. I guess that’s always been the issue with him. His talent is brilliant as we’ve often seen in glimpses.
