Another ex-employee sticks the boot in.

The mentality of signing "superstars" is why we're in the mess we're in.

It's always hard to sign superstars when you're not playing in the champions league on a regular basis.

All the players we signed, except Yoro, gave up champions league football to come here.

I'd say Zirkzee is the only one of our signings from CL clubs that was a regular starter. De Ligt, Mazraoui and Urgate were all misfits and eventually unwanted at thier former clubs.

He's probably right in that we've barely improved the starting line up from last season.

Bayern wanted rid of De Ligt due to the high wages they'd given him.

Ugarte was signed shortly before PSG changed managers and the new manager didn't want him.

Valid reasons for each club to sell but it says nothing about the quality of the players themselves.

Imagine if SAF went for the superstar route instead of gambling on the class of 92. Scholes, Giggs and Becks would probably still succeed but him?

It's a strange criticism taking aim at the fact we haven't signed any superstars when that kind of thinking is half the reason we are where we are.

I don't even think some of these ex-players are trying to be disruptive but they do come across quite thick. It's almost impressive how few of them seem to have a good understanding of the game when they were all part of successful teams.

De Ligt was also a misfit at Juventus and became a polarizing figure among the fans. He claimed the tempo of serie A didn't suit him, and that he only joined Juventus to play under Sarri who he believed had more of an attacking approach than he experienced at the club. Allegri was even more pragmatic in his second stint at Juventus. De Ligt left Juventus without improving much individually but his profile remained high and they were able to get a good transfer fee from Bayern

At Bayern, De Ligts game time was drastically reduced by Tuchel in his second season at the helm. Tuchel wasn't a fan of De Ligts passing and buildup play. All this coincided with De Ligt losing his starting place with the Dutch NT at WC 2022. Two NT managers (LVG and Koeman) have used him sparingly and he didn't play a single minute at the Euros.

I simply find it hard to think two giants in world football would give up on a prodigious talent within such a short time period. Bayern would've worked with his wages if they deemed him a pivotal part or their squad in my opinion, the very reason they offered the big bucks in the first place. They made a mistake and couldnt sell him sooner at a loss.

Some players are such huge assets to their clubs that they become unsellable, especially in or before their prime and during difficult times. De Ligt is not in the conversation to be regarded as one of those players going by his career trajectory thus far. He's still young so time is on his side for now.

As for Ugarte, I've only watched him play a few times but all evidence is showing that he flattered to decieve at PSG in the so called farmer's league that is Ligue 1. From what I've read on the PSG forum on Reddit, it appears the consensus is that he's a very one dimensional player that lacks in regards to the technical aspects of the game. I think we need more even from a DM in the PL. These signings just fill me with trepidation but I guess it stems from years of being burned in the post Ferguson era.

Nothing funnier than posters having a go at the club and players all week but the moment an ex-player does it people start crying.

To think some of you believe you’re more entitled to give your opinions about the club than players who actually gave blood, sweat and tears for the club especially CO92.

Way too early to say. I'm happy with out defensive signings for sure though.

The biggest change needs to be the manager, he is making the players look worse.

Who’s crying?

This is a disscussion forum, are people not allowed to have different opinions because he’s a club legend?

Why are you on a forum?

The metric of "you won't challenge for the league with those signings" is bizarre coming from anyone at this point. From an ex-player that was employed by the club up until fairly recently, it's just even more mental.

What "superstars" have even moved to, or within, the Premier League this season?

What was he expecting? Us to bring in Mbappe? Tempt Rodri from City?

He’s complaining we haven’t signed superstars. Rubbish interview.

Considering Nicky had his career under a manager that very rarely bought outright developed stars like Rio or RVP, rather relied on buying talent he could develop, like Ronaldo, OGS, King Eric, Peter Smeichel, Evra, Vidic etc. While all good footballers were not the household names they would become.

This is a bizarre angle from someone who should know better

They (Butt, Neville and Scholes) were all silent when the Glazers started destroying us.

Only reason why they're speaking up now is because their mates no longer work for the club.

Not sure what Butt is trying to say here, what clubs signed more “superstars” than Manchester United during the last 10 years?

Di Maria, Falcao, Schweinsteiger, Pogba, Ibrahimovic, Lukaku, Alexis Sanchez, Cavani, Cristiano Ronaldo, Varane, Sancho, Casemiro, Onana.

I wouldn’t class any of them as successful signings here for different reasons.
The “galactico” approach has been a colossal failure at this club.

Exactly this.

When has signing Superstars done us favours in the last ten years? They all come with egos that distract from what's needed, just look at Ronaldo and Pogba.
This transfer window has been the best in a long time, purely from the fact we haven't chased down superstars in the hope of a quick fix. This window has got proper planning behind it. Yes, the short time might still be painful, but this isn't about the short term.

I like Nicky, but he should butt out of it.*

*pun fully intended.
