Not sure about that. Cole was mentally weak in my opinion, a shy player that wouldn’t cut it at the top. Gomes looks super confident in his brief senior apps for us, demanding the ball, trying to score and trying to take a free kick off Pogba.

Cole wasn’t mentally weak when in the reserves. Always felt that his size worked against him. We shall see with Gomes, he’s talented but unfortunately you need to be exceptionally talented and dedicated to improving his game given his physique. Fingers crossed.

Reserves is a much lower level and out of the spotlight. At senior level the players are stronger and better. The spotlight is on and performances are torn apart by fans and media alike. Being able to show your best level under those conditions determines if you make it or not in my opinion.

Being small can work against you but that is mentality too. It isn’t the size of the dog but the size of the fight inside the dog, as the old saying goes. If getting cleaned out by a fast and strong 6ft plus defender sends you into your shell then you ain’t going to make it.

I like the lad, hope he stays and gets opportunities next year. Feel like he's ready to step up to the next level now.

Reading something and asking a question isn't falling for anthing, it's asking if anyone has more information. I've read that he's frustrated at lack of first team opportunities, is off contract in 12 months and is wanted by PSG (recently) and Barca (in the past) so not unreasonable to think he may be off either this summer or next, also not unreasonable to thing he may be using interest from other clubs to get an improved contract offer from us.

If you'd read the article you would have seen it was in the last paragraph of an article about the academy in general, not an article about Gomes, so how that can be defined as click bait I don't know.

Ok so you asked if a player who is under contact and hasn’t been released is going to leave. The answer is pretty obvious, there’s been no bid for him, so he’s not leaving.

Don't blame him for wanting to leave. Had so many dead rubbers towards the end of the season yet players that had let us down time and time again throughout the season got the nod over him. Must be seeing his mate Foden at City and thinking he should have the same and he's not wrong.

Not to mention we're actually trying/tried to renew Mata when his role in the squad could easily be taken up by Gomes.

Mata getting minutes ahead of Gomes next season would be criminal.

Difference is Angel has been our best player and captain at every level while Cole was nowhere close.

Been saying it for a while, we are fecking up with this lad not playing enough minutes.
The fact we are even trying to resign Mata, this lad should pack his bags and leave

Larnell fecking Cole???? Seriously

Nothing alike

I meant in the sense of a small made technical player who ultimately couldn’t make the step up. Cole was rated back in the day too, overshadowed by the terrific trio but definitely rated.

Edit: Being one of the best players at every level ultimately doesn’t mean much. Where are the likes of Tunnicliffe, Thorpe, Jones, Wilson, Eikrem, Daehli et al now.

Gomes is a wonderful little player but it won’t be easy for him. Hence why I brought up Cole. Just hope it goes differently for him.

Not by the exact same people who rate Gomes. I didnt see anything in Cole

Fair enough :)

No, nothing like him. Cleverley is a passer first and foremost, everything else is a lot more average with him. He's not particularly creative, he tends to play high percentage passes but with them he'll spread the ball side to side. Whereas Cole is all about the quick feet he can create space for a shot and can hit them with left and right foot. If Cole could pass more like Cleverley thats when he'd have a chance, but right now he just plays 8 yard passes to the person next to him. He's not going to switch play or anything like that

Sure and its not like I catch them all, someone who has watched Larnell for years might be able to tell me that he's shown before that he can play longer passes and he has that somewhere in his locker. I dont know, I just know from the certain amount of games I've seen that its a glaring part of his game that if he was good at it (playing the ball all over the pitch instead of really short passes to someone next to him) he'd actually have an excellent chance I think, because with his tricky feet and good shot he should be able to get a couple of goals a season as well

What I thought about Cole in Jan 2014, talking to someone comparing him to Cleverley and saying he sounds like him but quicker and more technical.

I shouldnt say I saw nothing in him because I clearly noticed a few positive things, but I mentioned he had a glaring weakness in that he only passed the ball to players right next to him and had no range of passing. And thats a reason why I dont think he had an excellent chance, in comparison to Cleverley who was playing in the first team.

So yeah I obviously rate Gomes a lot more than I did Larnell Cole, or Cleverley.

I liked Cole, but Gomes is better technically, and a better passer with better vision. Cole is perhaps a poor man's Gomes. More akin to Lingard in that he was the side's role player rather than the star Gomes is and has been for the side.

If there is one thing I would like Gomes to work on, it's his long range shooting. He's always tried to bend a shot into the corner from distance as opposed to how Scholes could rocket them in. That's something that Gomes could add to his game in order to make him more of a threat as he's already got great vision, and can combine with others in tight spaces. Funnily enough, it's very similar to how Pogba currently is at United compared to his time in our youth system and at Juve.

Verrati’s height was a doubt and now he is touted as one of the best midfielders and to add he plays at times the deepest midfielder.

I am sure Gomes can shine if given the game. We have to see if OGS has the balls to play him. I doubt it.

One thing I hate is when we appoint a new manager, they always forget the recent top prospect that are on the fringes to the first team but try to find new shiny player and forget the others.

First Zaha, then Januzaj, then TFM, Borthwick-Jackson, and now Gomes.

I wonder if Tunazebe would even get a chance?

Verratti and Insigne are/were tiny and they became the best players at Pescara. Verratti moved deeper to play with Insigne. You can see that Verratti is only an inch or so taller than Insigne.

CBJ was never a top prospect. He was just a decent youth player. Smashing a few crosses doesn't change that. He had far too many weaknesses to his game with few strengths to be a top prospect at the highest level. His name should be nowhere near a sentence with Angel and Adnan.

Pescara had some talented players.

I believe if we give a Gomes the minutes, he will shine and take us to the level we want to be. Unfortunately that won’t happen, his hieght is a problem. Even though it should not be.

Gomes should leave and hopefully England can benefit.

CBJ was playing at a good level and had been performing well. His weakness was not targeted by the opposition.

If we had carried on giving him the minutes I believe he would of improved further.

Didn't realise he was only 5'3. I thought he looked 5'7 or there abouts in some of the videos that have been posted.

Exactly - people expect these players to be as good as they can be at a young age and if they suddenly struggle under a more rubbish team in a lower league then he was never good enough for us.

CBj had good game after good game for LVG & was more attacking than any other fullback we have had post Evra. He hardly made mistakes in defence either.

LVG got sacked, Jose came in and even without trying him out he put the lad out for sale. Now he isn't improving and hit a stall. Shame.

CBJ wasn't good. Can't believe people still believe he was. Absolutely limited player.

He very well may be taller than that these days (although I suspect he'd be closer to the former than the latter). The heights that are available on the net are often never changed, so if players continue to grow those stats become out of date. For example google tells me Rashford is only 5'11", but I'm pretty sure he's closer to 6'1" now.

I'm fairly confident he's taller than 5'3, in a lot of photos with senior players (namely the Rooney and Mata photos) he doesn't look too far off their heights, if I had to guess I'd say he's about 5'5 now.

Yeah, but there's a difference between CBJ and say Laird or O'Connor. People will think I'm being a revisionist or acting on hindsight, but they have stood out more than CBJ has. I don't know why people would think I would ever do that btw, since I stood by Adnan, Thorpe, and Wilson. If I had to put a flaw, I would say that CBJ was too passive.

Here is Real Madrid's LB prospect De La Vibora

CBJ is a hybrid between a Centre Back and Full Back, he would not be dominating the flanks like Marcelo. But he would have improved in that aspect, I would had hoped if given the minutes instead of shipping him off.

Vibora looks like Marcelo. I wonder how good he is at defending.

Thanks for the link, That was music to my ears as I have praying for him to take some of Mata's/Lingaard's minutes all season. Hopefully he can get eased into the team this season and pickup a few hundred minutes ready to take a proper role the season after. I really like the look of this kid and think his chance of making it here is a lot higher than Chong's, he reminds me of Silva with his passing and ability to keep possession.

Love the lad but cannot see where we would play him in our current system.....

I think if we play the 433 that we played when Ole first came in Gomes could definitely play the Pogba role. He has touch, vision, and good movement. He deserves a shot this season, and if he can't breakthrough then look at a loan or selling him next year.

LM, AM, CM...not like anyone has torn up any trees in those positions for us lately.

Great - can see him getting plenty of game time this coming season with EL, a better cup run and with Herrera and Mata leaving.

I look forward to seeing this lad get some chances. He has the talent. It almost comes down to confidence with someone like him. When he's on his game he is extremely inventive and technically he has it in him to completely take the piss at almost any level. He can just be a little bit passive and safe at times.

Probably the one youth player that needs to go on loan the most. He is not even close to being ready for a squad place at United next year. And even if he was he needs to play. Would do well with a year at a semi-top Dutch club or something similar.

I think he's the type of player who needs to play in a system which encourages quick passing, one touch football, have more of the ball, team work etc rather than 11 individuals on the pitch who have no fecking clue on how to attack/defend together, If we can hopefully have a set way of playing next season which is similar then I can see Gomes and Greenwood having good games for us.
