As amazing as he is Id still prefer Cuadrado or Sanchez over di Maria.

Cuadrado I've seen little of; Sanchez is in the same bracket as di Maria for me. Considering di Maria's versatility, I'd rather want him in the team, but I'd take either of them. Cuadrado looks to have decent pace, but I know little else of him.

Just read a stat that says he has 84 goals/assists in 124 league games for Real. Not sure how accurate it is though. If it's true then you can't really expect much more productivity than that.

Wiki has his stats at 189 games, 36 goals and 87 assists. scores or assists every 2 out of 3 games.
92 assists in 125 appearances in the league in the world where most goals are scored. Since the emergence of Messi and the transfer of Ronaldo, there increase if goals scored in Spain has almost doubled from any normal. You never saw Kluivert or Raul score 50goals. So, take it down a notch. Noone has in 15years scored 40+ goals in the Premier League alone. So, his stats arent as useful as you might think. There is a HUGE difference between bottom-to-mid table teams in Spain and England, thus the emergence of clubs such as Soton, Everton, Swansea, Hull. There have been times where Wigan have been beaten 5-0 or 8-0, but that happens so rarely anyway.

We're talking about recruiting a player who can do something spectacular for us - having played for several season in a league where most defenders give up or 'run out of legs' after the 3rd goal, doesnt give him alot of credit.

To be completely honest, the only stats in his career that could be of any use to us, is his Champions League stats, as they are the closest to the Premier League standard, and 39/14 isnt impressive. Far from it.

I dont give a flying hoot about him having made near 100 assists in 125 games, when were talking about the weakest league regarding oppositions defenses.

Vidal plays in a league thats below the Spanish and Premiership on quality. And he has never really been amazing in the champions league, i wonder what you think of him and the rumours that we might be in for him? Using your logic there would be no point buying players from Spain. Because the attackers have it easy and the defenders clearly cant defend if the attacker have it so easy.

And erm El Sharaway? Like seriously? I cant believe it.

I agree with Cantona. On principle, that is. And because I can't stand di Maria. Or Madrid, really. Wouldn't buy a virus from them. Er, yes - you know what I mean.

I think LVG can get something out of our current crop of wide/wide-ish options, actually. I'd rather further strengthen the middle of the park - and buy a CB - than go for a winger. That can wait, as I see it. With a functioning, or even possibly a very well functioning midfield, our attackers will thrive. And we have great potential in that department. If Aloysius opts for a formation with "three strikers" as he calls it, I don't see why we need a shiny new winger. If he can make a combination of Rooney, RVP and, say, Adnan work as the front trio - well, I think we're looking pretty good. Even someone who has been written off as emphatically as Nani could have a revival under LVG for all we know.

;) Nice comments firmly agree.

Glad I'm not the only one totally baffled

I sort of understand your argument, there's a pride that comes with unearthing the next gem as opposed to say, signing Coentrao like we were meant to last summer. I think the main issue was with the hypocrisy of writing off Di Maria as a reject, then saying you'd prefer two others also put up for sale by elite clubs.

Yes I know I had one great point,, firmly followed up by a bad one, boy did I pay!

By the way Robben isn't for sale as far as I know.

I mean when Madrid put him up for sale, he'd still technically be a Madrid cast off. A bloody good one though.

Ah I see, hating Madrid Goggles off for a minute i just don't think Di Maria is right for us, if we are going all in for a top winger it has to be Sanchez IMHO.

I dont want Vidal due to his goalscoring record. I dont care about his assists. I want him due to his pace, strength and overall vision. He's not scared to play football. Heck I'd even take Flamini if he wasnt such a ponce - not affraid of tackles, not affraid to get pushed or get hit.

I'm not saying we shouldnt buy players from Spain - there are many good players. But take those who do a truckload of assists and score a gazillion goals with a pinch of salt, and put it into English context, and they wont be as shiny.

My only reservation would be his age, other than that i think he'd be an instant hit. Sanchez, Di Maria, Cuadrado, Depay...anything's better than Young.

Judging by the last couple of seasons and not this WC, then di Maria has been the better player.

All a matter of opinion I suppose.

Oh flipping heck yes anything but Young, sad thing is no one is going to buy him.

Any credible sources or is this all because of El confidencial putting two and three together because Madrid want James Rodriguez?

Bit of both from what i can gather, yes to the second part, but they are supposed to be fairly reliable themselves.

I think we're stuck with him, if you believe reports he's on 100k+. Is it 2 years left on his deal?

Think it's that yes, best we can hope for is a loan deal with us paying as little of those wages as possible, west ham, Newcastle, Villa you know you want him.

I don't know ... I don't see us getting both Cuadrado AND Di maria.

Just one is a better wideman than i thought we'd get this summer. Thought we'd neglect that and concentrate on other areas, but we've been linked with several wingers. No smoke and all that.

Hence why I struggle to see any big arguments either way. I'd be more than happy with either of them.

Sanchez , Robben, .............. Di Maria in that order for me, that is even if we are after a winger which I would doubt.

I'm not sure why you'd doubt we might want a wide player.

Nani and Young have been garbage. LVG seems to like at least one decent wide player in his system.

Two reasons, midfield still needs a player, defence maybe two, that won't come cheap, and we have Nani, Janujaz, Mata, Kagawa, Valencia, Young, Zaha, Rooney who can all play wide (some not v well admittedly!), any of these who we want to sell will prove very hard to do so, can we really afford another one.

Plus just an opinion of mine is that I think VG could make something of Welbeck as a wide man.

I would be ecstatic if we sign him and I imagine van Gaal would feel the same. He combines work-ethic and skill to perfection, while being so versatile and having great tactical flexibility, he's tailor made for someone so tactically astute like van Gaal and someone so demanding of his players to carry out his tactical instructions.

For me, he is second to Sanchez in who I think should be our primary wide man target. Sanchez would easily supplement double figures in terms of goals and I do think another source of goals from the team is ideal, despite having Mata . I have doubts whether di Maria could compete with those figures and he is more of a creative player anyway, so due to those margins I'd have to pick the Chilean. It's simply a atter of preference and who I think would be more suitable for the team, but I'd be happy with either.

Why do people keep saying Sanchez is a wide man. His best performances for a Chile and Udinese have been through the middle. He doesn't play there for Barca, so we don't see the best of him even though his stats aren't bad. He is not a natural winger like Di Maria.

I don't think Reus is what you'd call a natural winger, but people would love him here.

I'm not disputing his role through the middle for his national team, but he's a wide forward for Barcelona. Anyway, to rephrase, if we bring in a pacy attacker, I'd rather it was Sanchez.

But Reus plays well there.

Sanchez hasn't performed well in his three seasons at Barca.

Hasn't performed well? Or hasn't performed well there? He's definitely performed well, and last season he was excellent as a wide forward, not a million miles from what we'd do with him i think.

He hasn't performed well there. His best form came not surprising when Messi was injured. Which enabled him to play down the middle.

Looked good to me, don't want to bring this old argument out again, but he'd be an upgrade on what we have, and if he's available i think we should go for him. But that's for the Sanchez thread. Di Maria would be first choice if he's for sale.

But would take Di Maria if I had a choice.

As fantastic as he has been at the World Cup. Cuadrado is 30.....far too old

Bojan/Solid State

I was shocked when I read it.... wonder who I've mixed him up with

Di Marie is quality I remember the two legs against Madrid in the CL I was more worried when he was on the ball than any other Madrid player.

Bringing Young into this isn't really relevant - or fair - I think. If we're looking at replacing Young with di Maria we might as well replace, I don't know, Fletcher with Scweinsteiger - point being that Young is quite clearly a squad player at best and doesn't represent our actual potential in terms of wide-ish attackers.

Unless LVG is looking to sell Rooney I think it's likely he will try to fit both him and RVP into our offensive set-up in one way or another. If we're going for a 4-3-3 that would be two spots taken in the front three, so to speak. The third spot could be taken by Adnan. It could be taken by Nani, who has never really been used at United in what I consider his best role. It could be taken by Welbeck, who strikes me as a player LVG could work with and improve considerably. It could even be taken by Kagawa, who could finally get to shine in a wide-ish role for us under LVG's guidance.

So, it's not really about not wanting an undoubted top player like di Maria - it's more about whether we actually need to buy a top class winger. I don't think we do, personally. Plus, di Maria is a twat, as we all know.

Really?

News to me man!

I'd rather have a twat with quality than a useless twat - such as Young & Nani..

Oh, he's a twat - just look at him. Typical twattish look on 'im.

Seriously, though - of course you take a talented twat over a useless one. But I don't think Nani is useless - and then there's the fact that di Maria would cost us, what, fifty mill? If we spend that kind of money on Vidal, say, I have no issue with it. But I really don't think we need a dramatic upgrade in the wide department. The nature of our wide play of late is first and foremost a matter of having had a dysfunctional (central) midfield. Sort that out and the rest of team looks much better instantly. That is my theory anyway.

Fair dinkim - you got me there Chester

Nani's got talent, but talent is redundant if your attitude / applitude stinks. I'm sick of footballers that are just content in drawing in the wage packet & doin feck all to earn it. Nani has not earned his massive wages - apart from a season (many years ago) that he played well for half or 2/3's of it. Since then he's done feck all - apart from his 2nd-half cameo in the Community Shield against City 3 years ago, where he was brilliant - same as Cleverely. Both have lived off that half of football ever since & its done my head in to be honest. I dont see the point on waitin around for a player to realise his potential, when we can bring other players in that are walking the walk & driven to become great players for the club & their own self-esteem.

Look at Nani at the WC - figgin useless & thats his national team. Where was his pride & drive to help Ronnie out while he got himself fitter as each game passed? Absolute disgrace & the Portuguese fans have been slaggin the hell out of him from what i've read. He's a totally lacklustre player to put it politely. If we can somehow manage to use Nani as part of any deal to get Vidal - then we'll all be friggin delighted.

I agree with your point about CM & gettin that sorted will make us a much better team - not being overly concentrated on playin it wide the whole time is what we want. We need many types of options & being able to have players that can run with the ball through the middle of the park is something we've lacked for God knows how long. Vidal & Herrera would be so sweet & exactly the types we yearn for. 1 down & 1 to go in that mould.

I'd love us to get Carvalho also - that would leave us with one of the best CM's in Europe - added to that Mr. Carrick, who i feel will be back to his best next season too. We'd have wicked options in CM if the transfers all pan out the way i'd love it too!
