Ange Postecoglou | New Spurs boss on 4 year contract

Could be the ETH appointment spur nails on. Successful in smaller leagues and unproven in the top leagues. EtH had been proved in the UCL tough

Genuine question

What sets him apart from all those other Celtic managers who won everything?

It's the style in which they won. Ange has always set his teams up to play high intensity attacking football and he is a much more 'modern' coach than any of his predecessors at Celtic. He basically ticks every box that fans want in a manager these days. His views on the way football should be played, his ability to get teams to buy into his vision, his communication, relationships with players and fans etc. His methods are also conducive to long term success, as his last two clubs (Yokohama & Melbourne) achieved success after he left by continuing to play Ange's way.

I'm an Aussie and have been waiting over a decade for him to get a chance at this level. Coming from a relative footballing backwater in Australia hasn't been easy for him to build the profile needed to get noticed but he is absolutely the real deal. Everywhere he's gone fans have loved him because his teams are just so fun to watch.

I realise all of this sounds a little too good to be true so here's the catch..

My worry for Spurs and their fans would be that he did, undeniably, look naive in Europe. Was that a result of lesser players not being able to fully implement his vision, or was it naive tactics teams were able to exploit?

This is his only real weakness. It isn't naivety or a reflection of his players ability. It's pure pig headed stubbornness. Ange flat out refuses to compromise from playing his way, even in the face of much stronger opposition. In Australia we loved that about him as we were sick of parking the bus against better sides in the World Cup only to still lose anyway, but under Ange we took the game to our opponents even when we were thoroughly outclassed. His Celtic side were exactly the same in Europe - perhaps he could have got better results by playing more conservatively but that is unthinkable to Ange. He will never die wondering.

Coming from success in Scotland means very little, as we've seen before, so it's a guess whether he'll sink or swim. After the disaster with Conte, if he brings stability for a while, doesn't ask for the earth and Levy allows him time, it could be a good appointment for them. He seems to have the character and the mindset for it.

Yes, I think like with De Zerbi many are in for a surprise with Ange Postecoglou.

Good manager on the pitch and has an eye in the market. He has a good personality as well.

This is a good appointment for Spurs, and if they have a good summer, they will be challenging for the top 4 next season.
Revisiting this statement next May .

Personally I don’t see them finishing above 8th again.

Classic Peter Guillam, always posting about progressive coaches

But seriously, thanks for the post and insight

Spurs were woeful for most of the season and finished on 60 points. Postecoglu will definitely improve them, especially with no European football to distract them. I can easily see them being 8-12 points better off next season which puts them right in the mix for a top 4 slot.
His style of football is very high energy, high intensity. If they can get a reasonable replacement for Kane who gives them 15 goals a season the improvement from the rest of the team will see them win more matches and more points next season. Son in particular will love this style of football. First three months could be rough but once they settle in they will be fun to watch.

He's the type of manager Richy can thrive under so hopefully he gets his chance. Sensible move would be to sell Kane and make him the CF.

He done well at Celtic it’s undeniable but he’ll need £££ to rebuild that squad to play with the energy of his Celtic side.

Wouldn’t be surprised if they go in for Kyogo if Kane goes.

Why are so many writing him off already? Almost Souness-esque in here, probably because he's not British and hasn't managed in the PL. Not every appointment from abroad is a success - but there's been so many that have been written off before they've even managed a game.

Really tough gig for him. He’ll be up against probably 6 better resourced teams, each of whom will have a manager who is better than him. All while he has to carry out an overhaul of his own squad. And there would be questions about whether the guys he’s had at Celtic would be good enough to come in and make an immediate impact at this level of the PL.

I don’t fancy his chances.

I don't know too much of him re Celtic (as I havent watched them for some time..), but his work in turning around that brief Glasgow Rangers dominance is significant.. he will be used to being the attention as Celtic are a massive club. He did well with the national team too, and will have an eye on emerging players from the Asia Pacific.

Good luck to the Spurs.

We do have some really good football managers throughout the Premiership

People are going to be shocked by this guy.
He is the real deal. A quite brilliant manager who will be a success I am 100% sure of it. He's won everywhere he's been and his style of play will rival any coach anywhere in the world. Tremendous appointment.

Always sceptical of any manager coming from success in Scotland however I think this guy may do well if he's given time to build something.

They need a reset, shift Kane (to us) and change of style.

Since 2008 and prior to his spell at Celtic, his highest win percentage at a club was 50%.

People talking about him as if he's the second coming. He won't see out his 2 year contract.

4 year deal is pretty mad, what will they do if they are bottom half at Christmas? I think it's a massive gamble.

Big Ange’s appointment will send shivers up the spines of the Tottenham players. When he enters the canteen for the first time, all the chatter will stop. The players will freeze, the canteen staff will be paralysed and time will stand still. All before a brave soul has the guts to ask the question on everyone’s mind: “Is that Mark Viduka?”

Curious appointment. It would be interesting to see how he does. And how he deals with Levy. Ultimately, I don't think it matters who is their manager as long as Levy is the one calling all the shots.

He has the personality for it that’s for sure. I recall him shutting down reporters right away at Celtic after they were knocked out of Europe early on in his tenure.

He was massively written off on here back then too and despite the boards hate for Souness, a lot of the replies were as if Souness made them himself

That's my main worry about it. Spurs have been a relatively slow low-intensity team for quite some time now, so I expect there to be some tears along the way towards where Ange will be pushing them. Similar to us, where we had been largely one style of play with players mostly suited to that style, so while ETH certainly got some improvement we're still a long way from where he obviously wants us to be.

If Spurs struggle at the start and perhaps get spanked a few times by other teams, there will be a lot of pressure to get rid of the 'inexperienced manager who doesn't have what it takes in the PL'. If he manages to get past that stage I expect it'll be continuous improvement for a while after that though, much like we all expect with ETH.

Think it's more where Spurs are currently.

Kane probably leaving this summer, Son in general decline and a defence that shipped 60 + goals last season with two 36 year old keepers.

It's a harder situation to inherit at Spurs than what Mourinho and Conte had when they came in and will take 2-3 transfer windows to fix and that's with getting majority of signings right.

I'm sure he'll see out the whole 4 years of his contract.

It all really depends how the players react to him, we have a lot of good attacking players, sadly we had 3 managers who aren’t noted for their attacking play. Ange is at the total other end of the spectrum with how he wants his teams to play. I’m not saying he is gonna be a success by any stretch of the imagination but he is certainly a better fit with the players we have.

It's foolish to write him off, but it cannot be understated how much of a mammoth task it is to reconcile Spurs' (or Levy's) expectations and ambitions with the reality of their situation.

They want to be a top 4 club playing in the UCL. Ideally win some sort of trophy in the future. However there are 5 clubs ahead of them (City, Arsenal, United, Newcastle) who are in a better position in every meaningful way: better current squad, more money, settled managers. Spurs' position is like Chelsea's, a mismanaged squad and a team outside of Europe trying to get back in it. Yet Chelsea have way more money and in Poch a manager with EPL pedigree.

His task was nowhere near as hard at Celtic. In a 2-team league, he took the team that had won it 8 out of the last 9 times and had to freshen them up for a title challenge. And while he might be able to turn Spurs' fortunes around, the main question is if he will become a victim of Levy before he has time to do that. Arsenal put up with Arteta finishing 8th twice. At Spurs, Levy usually sacks managers who don't look like making top 4. It would be nothing short of an Herculean task to get top 4 from their current state and with the level of competition in this league.

I don't think anyone dislikes him, more like Levy & Spurs in general after Poch has been very mismanaged and it's hard to deliver in all that while actually trying yo build a working structure.

Im sure this is the sort of appointment that’ll make Harry Kane desperate to stay and fight for major honour, like the championship in a couple of years time.
