Andres Iniesta | Renewed contract with Barcelona

Let's pretend for a moment that we're not on planet Earth and that this is actually plausible, where on earth does he play? Playing him out on the left in our 442 would be a footballing crime. We'd have to go with a 3 man midfield to get the very best out of him. And that's what you'd want. You don't buy one of the best midfielders on earth to play him around the needs of Wayne Rooney.

The worrying thing is that people would actually come out with that sort of thing.

"He doesn't fit our style of play" would be another.

I don't really want this sort of shit clogging up our midfield:

Would much rather stick with a Giggs Fellaini combo.

That one is for you Mainoldo

bit fancy.
Give me a 5 yard Fellaini straight pass any day,

What the feck are you babbling about?

Stop pretending as if you're the only one on the Caf who understands football.

You alright?

I was about to ask you the same question.

You really think if we sign Iniesta, people are gonna say he should bulk up or he's not suited to our system?

fecks sake.

I do. Because at this moment in time, he wouldn't be suited to the way we play our football.

We would need to change formation and our approach to get the very best out of him. If he was played out on our left hand side, I'm quite sure there would be people complaining that a) he doesn't track back very well and b) he cuts in too often.

Where would he play if he joined us as of tonight? A two man midfield? Left wing? Would Rooney or Van Persie get dropped? This isn't exactly controversial.

Pretending we're not on planet earth...

I always thought he could adapt to a deeper midfield role as he got older. Always seemed like a good candidate to take on Xavi's role at Barca once it was needed. No reason he couldn't adapt to whatever position we'd want him in, he's a fantastically intelligent player. Plus if it meant playing Rooney out of position then fair enough, Iniesta is far, far, far better.

Shame there's feck all chance of this happening really. *sigh*

Can he actually tackle? I think he's great but he could get exposed in midfield if he's not up to scratch defensively. Perhaps he'd adapt well in central midfield, but I think he's a lot more dangerous when more advanced. I think because of the amount of possession Barca have he'd probably do very well in the Xavi role. It would be interesting to see him play it elsewhere to get a better gauge.

According to Spanish radio RAC1 and Marca (yes I know), Iniesta has turned down the latest contract offer of 230k Euros a week net. It is thought that he's reluctant to extend because of Sandro Rosell the president. A lot of players don't like him and its implied that he's the reason Valdes is leaving too.

How long is Rosell in term for?

I think reelection is in 2016.

So he'll be 32 by then. I guess another 2 and a half years at this stage of his career under a president he doesn't like is kind of a big deal.

Isn't really Spanish, looks too pale.
Couldn't cope with the pace of the league.
Can he play on the left wing?
Etc. (I've probably already been beaten to these)

Big enough for him to leave Barcelona? I doubt it.

Apparently Graham Hunter said on Talksport that while writing his Barca book, Iniesta told him that if he ever left Barcelona, he would strongly consider United. Didn't listen to Talksport myself but plenty of mentions on Twitter. I've been reading through Hunter's TL, and he is adamant that United were willing to pay what Madrid paid for Bale but Bale wanted Madrid only. Also says that United are interested and monitoring Iniesta's contract situation. Says money is there to be spent. Still think that whatever his agent is stirring up is to get him a better contract. Hunter has good contacts at Barca and would have been fed information by someone. He also has proper contacts within United, David Moyes being one of them.

Also, Rafael Hernandez, who is a bit of a whiny git but who I'm fairly certain has a real contact at Malaga and is generally reliable when it comes to Spanish club rumours, says that Valdes is leaving because of the Barca board and that the Iniesta negotiations are stalling because of them too.

Hunter doesn't have the links to the club he enjoyed previously during Laporta & Pep's time, I've followed him for 5 years now - this is the least connected to the club he's been so take his assessments with the proper perspective

Iniesta is best friends with Valdes and there were a lot of concerns last season when Victor balked at renewal talks that Iniesta was going to follow suit. He cleared that up in the media repeatedly that he wanted to retire at Barcelona and while there have been rumblings for some time that all the problems with the club stem from Rosell, Iniesta has never given any indication he's unsettled - at least not publicly

Rosell, the weasel he is, has had some stories presumably leaked to the local papers that the holdup has been over wages - I assume to make Iniesta look greedy? Iniesta & his agents then leaked word that rather than money, they want his old physio reinstated (This, btw, was also an issue Valdes had when they fired his keeper coach and led to his balking at the renewal). Interesting that Victor, Iniesta & Messi all have physio/trainer issues that stem from Rosell's board - seems a very odd direction to take a club that was absolutely stable and thriving. Corporate whore at work

When a renewal takes longer to conclude (I think Messi had his done in short work), the rumours will obviously build. I can't honestly see him leaving, not only because of his ties to the club but how rooted in Spain with his family, vineyard etc. he is...but you never know

Yeah can't see him leaving either. But I can see his agent letting the rumours fly around to get his client a better contract.

The stuff about the physios/trainers sounds so silly. Just be professional and get on with your job. Unless they've hired utterly incompetent replacements, which I doubt is the case. Makes you wonder what exactly these physios were doing that made them so irreplaceable to some players...

I can't see this happening guys. What was it Moyes said about Ozil?

We will not sign Iniesta. You guys are dreaming! And you can quote me on that!

Oh how I'd love to be mocked in the You Can Quote Me on That thread in the general for this.

Not to be a kill joy, but where exactly would we play him?.

Without changing our shape and style dramatically, he would look just as lost as Kagawa does at times.

He can play anywhere he wants, he would easily be the best player at the club instantly.

Not losing the ball is a much more effective defensive measure than tackling ever can be. Needless to say, he'd excel in a midfield two.

He'd require a midfield 3 I think. That said, he is the best midfielder of his time in my view and is more than worth us re-adjusting our system for. We'd need someone to play Xavi in this script though, seeing as Carrick will be playing Busquets and Iniesta will be appearing as himself.

Well done lads, you've got the idea of the transfer forum to a T!

Oh, that's Fellaini - clearly.

I don't think Iniesta would excel in our current set-up. But he would certainly be up for playing alongside Carrick. He's rather good allround, that Iniesta. Rather good indeed.

In his early barca days he played as the most defensive midfield in the midfield 3. He could easily play in the midfield 2 for us, whether that will limit his game is another question. Either way he'll literally stroll into our starting 11
