I dont recall many players before a game stating that they are a much better team than the team they're about to play because it would generally be seen as unsportsman like and would actually rile up the opposition. He could have just been a normal person and said "We're going to fight hard and we believe we'll win" .

If an opposition player said this about us ahead of a game, i'd be expecting one of our players to do precisely what Matic did.
It's not a big deal and I'm by no means outraged by Onanas comments but I find them unnecessary and ill advised in the circumstances.
I remember ETH slagging off Newcastle a few years back after we played them in a home game. We then played them away and Eddie Howe spent the pre match showing Newcastle players what ETH said. They then ran us off the park completely. Basically don't go poking, ESPECIALLY when you're shite which he is and we are.

Onana was wrong to say we are miles better than Lyon if that is what he said and it isnt really true however Matic's comments are a disgrace and completely unprofessional.

Partial quote or not, when a player says his team is way better than Lyon whilst sitting 13th in the table all gloves are off. I don't really have an issue with what he said, if the roles were switched we would be loving the response.

There's a distinct difference in tone, Onana's initial comment was blase and a bit naive. Matic's were disrespectful and delivered with the intention of causing a stir.
I don't particularly care how Matic has responded though, I just find it bizarre how many United fans are ready to lap them up and react almost gleefully towards them. Does the hatred of some of these players run that deep?

He is the GK of the 13th best team in the PL, having won the total of 38 points, a -4 negative goal difference and if he had any common sense he would have realized that we would be in a relegation fight if any of the bottom 3 teams wasn't as bad as they have been. I as a Manchester United feel disgraced that a United first teamer has no common sense and a bit of shame to keep this in mind. If it was Bruno it would be stupid to say that, but Onana? If United/Onana were actually good right now I would find Onana’s comments about us and the subsequent back and forth with Matic great entertainment, as I do think this sort of drama makes things more interesting.

There's a difference in saying that and Matic saying "he's the worst goalkeeper in the history of United". Matic didn't need to take it to that level..he could easily have said "let's see what happens Thursday". Why take it to a personal level?

He's also our worst keeper in history, so he's not wrong there. Matic may have not won a cup with us but hes a 2x PL Winner, I think he's won an FA Cup too, playing for us when we finished 2nd in the league. I think what he said is accurate.
I do agree he didn't need to openly go so personal to Onana, but after he did I didnt much mind it because Onana was being a tit with his comments. There's no humility in his words and he deserved to be put in his place.
