Ander Herrera to PSG? | Gone.

We were the ones being greedy (a football club that makes almost £600m a year), by keeping him on his sub market value contract for longer than required. He took a risk by letting it completely run down, and now he's rightly being rewarded for it.
That's the part that gets to me about this whole situation. We always used to be good about rewarding players who outperformed their contracts. Just shows what a bunch of cnuts we have in management post-Fergie/Gill.

The caf: “why do we keep putting average players on sky-high wages? It’s a disgrace!”

Also the caf: “how can we allow Herrera to leave? Just pay the money, it’s a disgrace!”

I'm sure if you think about it really hard you can work out why those two statements aren't contradictory.

Meh, i've always maintained that we'd never challenge for serious titles with Herrera and Mata as first team players.

Can't blame the player either and good business by PSG, replacing Rabiot with an experienced player for free.

From Utds perspective, there's no way we should be losing a 29 year old first team player for nothing!

Negotiate extensions once a player has 2 years left. If its not sorted within a year get rid, regardless of who it is.
100% on those last 2 paragraphs popper. Can’t believe an investment banker like Ed allowed it to get this far. It’s negotiation 101, or well, just finance 101.

If it brings some kind of structure to our wages, then be it. It will hit us now but will help us standardize things in the long run. Even the mighty City backed out with Sanchez .

We got to draw a line and say , enough is enough and half decent players will not milk us.

We extend the contracts of shit players like Jones and Young, then lose a decent player like Herrera. What will it take for this club to start being run like an elite club again?

How hard is it to understand - those are 2 completely different things! We offered Jones a contract - he said yes. We offered Herrera a contract - he said no. It's not like Herrera would have said yes if Jones hadn't been offered a contract!

People will tell you Jose didnt like him. But Jose wasnt the one to decide who to keep long term or not when he survives 3 years at clubs. If we listen to short term managers, no wonder we are in a mess squad wise.

I criticised the clubs policy in waiting til the last year of contracts in the past. The triggering of the one year clause instead of extending was bothering me for quite some time. Thats fine if it is for dross players, but valuable players should get contracts extended much earlier. If you leave it that late, this happens if a big club comes in.
I am of the complete opposite opinion. There is a reason why we have been seeing out contracts for older players and its simply that they have been on cheap contracts and we already have the largest wagebill in the PL.
To offer and extend a contract like Herreras would have cost a lot in wages if we had done it earlier. Its a myth that we are losing value by doing this even if we are losing him for nothing now. Same with Jones, Mata, Smalling etc.
United has the financial clout to keep anyone the club wants to, and we do not have any incitament to prolong cheap contracfs before their due dates especially since those wages are needed for De Gea and signing new players in a market that is completely different now than 3-4 years ago. That does not just apply to transfer fees, it does to wages as well and its funny to see people here referring to wage structures that are 4-5 years old. It costs much more to sign players in wages today and that applies for extensions as well.
Also it should be noted that we are prolonging contracts for younger players like Lingard and Martial in good time which is exactly how it should be.

If paying Sanchez so much was a bad benchmark for us to set, then paying Herrera £200 k per week wouldn't be too far behind, so not really bothered given the circumstances.

Ability wise can do so much better for that sort of money.

As much as i love the passion and drive Herrera shows, i can understand his decision to leave if the rumours are true.
Getting 200k/w, a basicly guaranteed national title and a proper run at the CL does seem like a no-brainer for his last contract.

I'm sure he'd love to stay at United if we gave competitive wages and chance of trophies, but i'm glad we're not offering those wages, and its highly unlikely we'll deliver as many trophies as PSG.

We do need someone of his ilk though, but lets use this opportunity to improve our starting 11 and get a player who has both the intensity and work rate of Herrera, and the vision he lacks.

Yes but the same can be said for most of our squad

Of course.

I'm not blaming them for it, but it's just a money grabbing, egotistical, and in the main very average bunch of players we seem to have atm, and it's hard to have much affection, or connection with them as a fan, so them leaving isn't an issue.

Herrera had other options which meant it was harder to get him to sign.

No other club would want utter shite like Young or Jones so we had a free run at them.

But it begs the question why was Jones even offered a new contract in the first place?

If we want to be competitive at all next year, we'll have to spend well above 250 million over the summer.

This is our own doing. The fact that we didn't extend his contract in the past few years is ridiculous. Bordering on negligence. I am annoyed.

Surprised he seems to be getting the cold shoulder! He's the sort of player that would give his all no matter where he's playing next season! We could do with him tonight

Probably because we already need to spend big on a central defender to partner Lindelof and we already have Rojo and also possibly Bailly leaving.

If Jones is willing to play a back up role and earn a low salary whilst the likes of Tuanzebe develop on loan then it's an absolute no brainer.

I suspect homegrown squad players are more likely to be offered new contracts. Decent English players who would be their replacements wouldn't come cheap so it probably made sense to keep Jones and Young around.

This game is showing that you’ll be fine without him and replacing him with a younger alternative. Fred and Mctominay as squad players will be fine.

- you should have sorted the contract out beforehand though and this does show the issues that Phelan/OGS are talking about in terms of the way the clubs being run. Letting these players run down contracts with uncertainty just isn’t healthy.

If he’s been holding out for £150k+ through this contract negotiations then there’s no “sorting it out earlier”.

A lot of people seem to think players will be happy with a smaller rise just because you are offering it to them with more years to run but there’s no reason why that would be the case.

Since when though? The last few weeks when this has become a news story or since last summer?

Herrera can only stay to clean Mctominays boots. Get rid of him,Mata,Young,Matic and start rebuilding.

I think it’ll turn out to be a blessing in disguise getting rid of Herrera. McTominay is ready to take the step up and become a regular.

Yeah hard to care right now about Herrera leaving based on recent performances by McTominay and Fred. It's very likely we needed a new CM anyway so paying Herrera what he wants for him to sit on the bench when we seemingly have 2 very able players to fill his role in the squad? Nah tada

I wouldn't mind keeping him but the problem is that he's not good enough to play in the first team and too expensive to keep him as a squad player.

Most importantly, we need to improve in our first team and we don't want to keep too many overpaid squad players

Looks like it's over for him. Good luck for him in PSG but he shouldn't play for the rest of the season considering he has no more future here.

That's what I said but was told I was being emotional - we have other options in Fred, McTominay and Pereira

He has the personality but lacks the talent. It’s always been the case for him. There are better alternatives out there who are certainly obtainable for us. If this is how OGS has seen it then good on him.
