Ander Herrera is a Manchester United Player!

All this might actually make their attempts at recruiting Basque players harder. Some might be wary of feeling they are going to be trapped at a club. It is almost like pre-minimum wage clubs here, players were just property not human beings.
True. But I'm guessing a few factors come into play. One is Basque pride even among the players to help Basque clubs. Second is all players know they need to be careful when negotiating the buy out clause.

It's not a release clause, it's a buy-out clause, so Bilbao can reject any amount of money they receive, a bid won't trigger anything.

On that note, i'm off out for a bit. I'm betting when I get back later this thread will have quite a few extra pages lol
Same for me. Retiring for the night. Hoping for more good news tomorrow. I hope ..... :nervous::nervous:

He had a medical Sunday so there's clearly some form of acceptance from Bilbao that he's going to be coming to us fee agreed or not, if he's been at our training ground it's because they've allowed him to be or everything's sorted via the LFP and we're just waiting on official announcement. Either way, it's going to happen.

I'm not sure that is the case

I'm a bit confused but calm. Bilbao rejected a bit yet Herrera is in Manchester and has both agreed personal terms and passed a medical.

This is the most hilarious transfer saga we've had in recent memory

Bilbao's trolling and our asinine response makes it hard not to laugh.

I'd assume there are some form of insurances whereby we don't just hand him the cash and he goes "cheers, I'm off to Real Madrid. Thanks for the £40mil and that".
It was more the opportunity cost than the financial one I was thinking about, Im sure the loan or however the money is legally passed on would be secure, but if he decided to go to Real, to use your example, they could cover the money but have saved themselves the legwork of dealing with Bilbao.

As I said was more thinking about this theoretically, its not an issue Im worried about actually happening.

I can only assume that because he's terminating his contract then he is 'ok' to go to other clubs.

Maybe his status is in limbo, therefore it doesn't matter? Maybe it is part of standard procedure? Maybe the player intends to terminate the contract and pay full compensation (or already did) and so it doesn't matter?

The fact is, if it really is a problem, you can bet Bilbao would have lodged a complaint with UEFA already. They didn't.
well if where talking facts we don't even no for sure he was there.

and im not trying to guess the legal stand points, possibly united are worried about it hense while it has been quite on that front this morning, possibly bilbao don't no if we broke the rules or not becuase this isnt an every day transfer, maybe thier hasnt even been rules drawn up for these occasions.... we don't no.

i still dont think it sets a good resdent or is the ethical thing to do having a player at your club discussing a transfer without permission of his club or a firm deal in place to buy him

Try and think of it as, "we're waiting for the cheque to clear."

Jesus, 30 new pages since last night. Can someone summarise very quickly what has happened? Is the deal off?

What's confusing? We submitted a bid akin to the release clause, they chose to reject, because of that, we have to do it the hard way which is giving Ander the money (And avoiding tax on recieving monies) so he can buyout the clause, he's submitted the money, wheels are in motion, meanwhile, had a medical and showed round Carrington while waiting for the process to be completed, the only confusing thing is the timing at which his club announced their rejection.

Athletic issued a statement saying €36m bid was rejected (probably from earlier in the week) and that's the only 'official news'. General acceptance in all reports that it's going to happen and more a case of when it happens rather than if & he's apparently handed all documents etc. over to LFP that'll allow him to break his contract with Bilbao and subsequently join us.

well if bilbao agreed to him having a medical thats fine.
people having been saying it dosn't matter whether bilbao have said he could come or not becuase we are buying out his contract. which i dont agree with, i dont think you should have a player at your club untill an agreement is in place. which it dosnt seem to be yet.

They dont want to sell him

It's out of their hands.

So you reckon Bilbao are merely acting the eejit here and the rest is a formality?

I'm confused. Didn't we pay the buy-out clause then, because we put in a £29M bid, which is equivalent to €36M bid?
It has to be deposited at the LFP headquarters. We offered the money to Bilbao purely as a formality to give them a choice to accept/reject.

It's not as straight forward as that when it comes to non-Spanish clubs activating clauses etc due to tax issues etc. Herrera would have to buy himself out of his contract at that price rather than us paying it to Bilbao. We bid €36m equal to the clause to try and avoid that issue but they rejected it and it'll go through LFP with Herrera buying himself out instead.

Yeah

It's because of the buyout clause. It's a breach of his contract anyway so theres no harm in bringing him over to sort things out I'd imagine.

United wouldn't be in the situation because they don't use them. Whereas in Spain it is mandatory.
again i get the legal argument, i just don't agree with the ethical argument of having a player at our club without permission or a deal been in place.

Thats fair enough but we wouldn't be able to get him otherwise as Bilbao wouldn't give him permission would they. Also the 'deal' is kind of in place. The guys at the LFP are just looking it over right now I imagine.
