Shame our players that have more quality don't play with the same attitude as this guy does.

I don't understand why people don't rate him. Also he is good on the ball. Doesn't have ability to ping passes but his control and quick feet in tight spaces is very good.

He should start every game.

Jose needs to explain why Herrera, Mata, Fred and Bailly have barely played this season. Only come in when enforced by circumstances.

Herrera and Fred would be Klopp's dream midfield wouldn't it? I don't get why we don't use these players to play the pressing game and win battles in midfield to keep our attack going. I mean, both these two players are real good in this particular area, so why not use them. Its no mystery what they are good at, so maybe try that instead of figuring out where Pogba is most effective. Nobody has a firm answer to that and still we just rely on him every game. This was much better.

Herrera was a real boss against Arsenal and I can't think of a game against a top team where he didn't play good. He has probably had a couple, but often he is just the man you want for the big occasions I feel.

Quality performance and really proud of him to be honest. Skipper material, structurally without Pogba in the midfield there was a lot more freedom for movement in those supplementary areas and even Matic played well. I'm not a big fan of the 3-5-2 in general and/or the 4-2 with two deeper midfielders but going forward there is some room here to fit Fred and maybe even Peirera in if all three guys can be versatile all-round players in midfield. This might allow Matic to naturally gravitate back towards the anchor role when we don't have the ball rather than trying to get involved and getting stuck further up field.

Just like with Martial, it's taken a stupid while for a stupid man to realize that Herrera needs to feature all the time for us. Mourinho is wasting everybody's time by not making blatant tactical adjustments

This is my biggest gripe with the man, he can't seem to spot what armchair united fans can see from a mile away and yet he is being being paid mega bucks for holding us back

Then some people will start praising him when he finally corrects the error he creates himself by not playing the obvious players after months of wasting our time... worst still, he corrects his mistakes one at a time (shaw then martial now Herrera... maybe in 2 months time it will be Fred's turn and then his supporters will praise him when he should have made the decision ages ago)

Like him. Magnificent player to have in big games. You can talk about quality but you're always sure he'll be up to it and will give his all.

It's crazy because Herrera perfectly embodies the perfect midfielder for Mourinho. It's fecking annoying that he still doesn't what is his best team. It's impossible to praise him for it like you mentioned, so frustrating

I love the guy - his only issue is that it's really noticeable when he does play bad - and he'll be dropped for a long spell again. I hope this is not the case this time.

My MOTM.

How some people don't rate him on this forum I'll never know. He takes pride in playing for United and is our only big game player post-Fergie.

Agree just he doesn't suit Mourinhos or Van Gaasl football at all. His best qualities is pressing high and playing a high intensity game. He is not as good in low intensity games and is not a player to dominate in slow possesion like say a Modric or Kroos. That is why he often does much better in big games when other teams often drive up the tempo too.

I want us to play offensive high intensity pressing football. Pogba and Herrera would both do so much better playing that football and so would most of our attackers too.

Completely mismanaged and underapreciated here. Van Gaal didnt use him as often as he should, leaving him out for longer periods. Same with Jose. He is a modern midfielder suited for high tempo, but who performs quite often by giving his best

You maybe should ask yourself the question: Why is that? Two different managers who don't seem to rate him? And don't come with "they're awful managers". Like Jose or don't, like LvG or don't, but they're not stupid. I like Herrera sometimes. He is a good player. But the comparison with Martial is way off. My biggest problem with Herrera is that there isn't any natural position in the team for him and that his positional sense is not good enough. He runs around a lot and in open games, against Arsenal for example, it works well. The truth is that Herrera hasn't been great this season exactly, and one game doesn't change that.

They are both outdated. Van Gaal and Jose dont play a lot of pressing, they stick to their past methods and havent moved on with the times.

And also question marks why we bought him. Club target, but then we appoint managers completely not suited to our players. We have a scattergun approach to players and managers, just buying and taking whoever is available currently. The last of them is Fred.

Herrera is a high tempo very agressive player that take some risk in his play. LVG and Mourinho likes slow and dull games with 0 risk. It is just like De Bruyne not doing well under Mourinho too. (although he would suit LVG better though). I guess Mourinho likes tempo sometimes and to see fight in his players, but he still want low risk big guys like Matic.

I swear this has happened almost every year since LVG times. Herrera is here, but then seems to be replaced in the starting line up for some reason or another which doesnt quite make sense, but you realise when hes back how much effort and work he puts in.

The one season he had an actual run was Jose first season (and that too, after coming off the bench vs City).
His energy is infectious, but also got product in the last two games with a goal and and an assist.

Think he should be starting as many games as possible. He has the dark arts mastered imo but he can be quite a good footballer. Think he would be the obvious choice for a captain.

Just love watching Herrera play, his passion to win and his high tempo play, and his quick passing. He is the opposite of what players Mourinho likes to pick for games who is slow, no high tempo no passion.

numbers vs Arsenal

What were Matic's figures as to why Macca thought he was worthy of MOTM?

Pretty much. His team selections are one of the most annoying parts about his time here

Its the same as Smalling. Managers (and fans) get this idea that they need to improve the position, bring in other players, eventually Smalling or Ander get their chance and perform better than the new players and the ones who were being picked.

They are just generally underrated players who are professional and work hard to win their place, while a lot of players around them are losing their heads and cant show the same consistency or character.

Was about to post these stats. By far the best player against Arsenal.

What were Matic's figures as to why Macca thought he was worthy of MOTM?

Matic: 86% passing accuracy, 1 tackle, 3 interceptions, 0 chances created.

Herrera was obviously miles better. McManaman thought he was MOTM either because he is an idiot or because he is a Liverpool fan and a media narrative that Matic is playing well and deserving his place in the side is good for them.

A good game but no way a starter here. Usually doesn't impact the game as much as last night and passes backwards as many times as anyone in the PL! A widely held belief other than when I come in here after his one good game every few months. Strength lies in stopping opposition.

Fernandinho passes back a lot too.

And he's been our best player in the last 2 matches so yes obviously he should be a starter here

We need him to play every game.

It's not only the energy and love for the club he gives, most importantly - it's the chaos he brings.
We need fecking chaos, we need the intensity, the bickering with opposition players, playacting, we need to be hated again!

I hate Pogba's lazyness, Matić looks uniterested in any hassle and conflict, Martial looks fecking asleep the whole game.....and so on.

God, i hate Rojo, but feck me, put Rojo, Herera and Jones in the same team and you will bring chaos to the game, you'll get cards, penalties, intensity, hate above all!

I ain't saying put eleven Vinnie Joneses on the team sheet, but feck, at least one or two!

We had fecking Roy, Jaap, even older Rooney or Tevez were cnuts sometimes.

One of my most vivid memories of watching United was Roy's incident in the tunnel with Viera.

I want that again! I don't care for flicks, backheels, sombreroes and shit, i'm a grown man, i wanna see passion, passion for the game, for the club, for your teamates, i wanna see them becoming a team again.

what is did Matic actually do?

Wow you do love Smalling, haha.

But yeah, I agree on the whole. I do think both can be improved upon overall, but for what we have, Herrera specifically is probably our best midfielder and should be used as the deepest or box to box (one or the other, but not both).

I think both can be improved as well, but they're currently 2 of our better players so we need to fix the weaker areas first. When we have good players in the other positions where we're weak thats when its time to look to replace them

This is painfully accurate.

This, and simply this. Nothing more to add

Might just bring peoples attention to what Paul income has said about him

Ander Herrera might not be the best player on the planet. But he gets United, he gets what it means to play for them and you can see he really wants to win. He has that desire which Lukaku, and particularly Pogba don't seem to understand."

He might not be the best player we have ever had but I fecking love the guy. Bollocks to José saying we have no mad dogs

Hopefully I a world after Jose we'll see him play at the base of a 3 regularly for us.

Pogba Herrera Fred

Should be the midfield we're playing all the time.

There are certain players who must play every game if Utd want to come out of this slump.
De Gea
Herrera
Martial
Rashford

Criminally underrated, should be starting in a midfield 3 with Pogba and Herrera.
Matic to come on late to see out games.

If he plays consistently then he will get the usual impressive stats (assists+tackles+interceptions) . His form seems to pick up when he's playing successive games.

I'm not saying he's a world beater but he could play for a high intensity pressing team and not look out of place. Underrated.

Agreed. Plus play the above dynamic and tenacious midfield with Martial Sanchez and Rashford upfront, and you have quite a team I'd say. However. Jose Mourinho's world is different.
