With nearly 50% of the world's population honoring him with recognitions its a shame we dont have a thread in the cafe.

Reinstated his class as the best in the world again.Should probably go down in history as one of the greatest champions ever only behind Botvinik, Alekhine and Kasparov.

he won with black and thats even harder.

True...Winning with black is harder certainly to the level of losing the service advantage in Tennis at GM's level higher than 2650.

If a white starts with e4 black can answer e5, c5, c6 e3 or transpose it in to any other defence but at best a player with black pieces can only equivalize.
It takes one mistake from black to lose the match or if black fails to equivalize then the match is good as lost. But white has to make two mistakes to lose the match. Even if white makes one mistake, Black can go one move ahead but still white can get a draw if the player is positionally strong.

More than a decade back Victor Korchonoi former challenger from Russia said the player who can twat Kasparov with a sicilian defence would go on to take over from Kasparov. Anand did that few months later and how true his words were.

I love playing it, but I must make more effort to follow the elite level.

It's a board game.

People call it a sport to let the dorks feel included.

"Chess today is a recognized sport of the International Olympic Committee."

No, it's not complicated at all. I'm quite good at chess, and most other mind games for that matter. But my sticking point is the fact it's actually called a sport (and I'm aware it has been for some time). Because it's not, it's a fecking board game.

And now that it's recognised (by the already failing standards of) the Olympics is preposterous. A joke. That's an insult to REAL sports, and sportsmen. And it fits in with the raft of 'Olympic' sports that shouldn't be there... Like Tennis, Soccer, etc etc.

Usain Bolt's gold medal just had a layer of shine taken off it.

Actually, tell you what.

I'll conceed you the 'it's a sport' point, so long as you lot only ever utter the words 'Chess' and 'sport' in the same sentence around your chess clubs.

You sound like a fecking moron.

Chess is a fecking board game.

The Olympics are a joke if they're going to incorperate another useless game into the equation. Just takes away from the real events.

:wenger:

International chess Olympiad is happenning for ages even before it got recognized by Olympics. fecking board game! Any other board game can be mastered by any clueless village idiot with a bit of practice but to reach a certain level in Chess it takes a lot of doing.

Chess requires lots of physical activity once you start competing at a certain level at least three hour work out in gym is required everyday to relive the stress and the best in the Chess are very much comparable to the best in fields of other research.

Few years back me and my mates were was walking through the first version of BCO released by Kasparov and Keene and was taken back a bit how some theories and popular openings that were devised before '85 got wiped out completely by now with thousands of novelties rendered ineffective.

You're the first mental midged of a kind I had come across who had alleged Chess isnt a complicated game and you're good at that. Incidentally the Anti-Moron™ filter on my PC also went bonkers when I started to read your post.

GYM WORKOUTS ARE REQUIRED?

That's hilarious. And I think everyone's well aware that it's an extremely mentally challenging game, but it's just a game. It's not a sport.

Which was my point in the first place. You read far too much into it, and to personally attack me? Laughable.

Its not not hilarious mate, any one played competitive chess to a certain level can tell you.

no personal attacks there..just sums up how much clue you have on what you're talking.

Whether its a sport or a board game the opinion might differ based on how much a spectator can grasp. But to claim it's an easy game and you're also really good...It cannot hold logic unless you're the type who enjoy beating kids in board games.

I never said I was really good, I said I was quite good at chess. Or more to the point, I'm quite good at solving puzzles and the like.

For someone who virtually never plays/played, I always held my own against my mates who took chess seriously and entered into tournaments down here.

Has any of these Elite Chess Players tried to copy a Baz Attack

 Not a word I associate with Viktor Korchnoi.

Chess is a great game/sport/pastime.

It's a game though, isn't it, really...

Take it from someone who plays sometimes.

On another note, anyone want a game?

Sport is an activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively. Sports commonly refer to activities where the physical capabilities of the competitor are the sole or primary determiner of the outcome (winning or losing), but the term is also used to include activities such as mind sports (a common name for some card games and board games with little to no element of chance) and motor sports where mental acuity or equipment quality are major factors. Sport is commonly defined as an organised, competitive and skillful physical activity requiring commitment and fair play.

sport
noun
1 [C] a game, competition or activity needing physical effort and skill that is played or done according to rules, for enjoyment and/or as a job:
Football, cricket and hockey are all team sports.
I enjoy winter sports like skiing and skating.

2 UK all types of physical activity which people do to keep healthy or for enjoyment:
She used to do/play a lot of sport when she was younger.

So things like chess, poker and baseball aren't sports.

Chess is too complicated to dismiss it as a game it's more than that but not a sport. It's probably equally hard or much harder to succeed at chess than in any other sport.

 This is a joke surely?

Nah...Physical fitness is a big factor once you reach a certain level.

If its only about presence of mind, theoritical and permutations on known variations Bobby fischer would've been easily rated as the greatest of all time.

When you start learning chess and try your luck, its easy to figure that out.

Admittedly at the lower levels fitness does not play any factor, but at the elite levels, you have to be at your peak physically.

Incidentally, anyone fancy coming to chess club with me tonight?

I'VE GOT IT!

Now I know why they go to the gym when they're playing at the top of their game... It's because they're playing Harry Potter-like chess where they ARE one of the pieces!

Yes, it all makes sense now.
