Analysis of our attack against Newcastle

The one I found most annoying was when Antony had gotten free of Burns late in the 1st half and had a simple enough ball to Bruno in space at the edge of the 18 yard box. For some reason he went for a much harder cross for Ronaldo.

Edit: It's even worse looking at that photo still (no. 12). We had a 4 on 2 overload if he picks the simple pass.

Everyone who watches us sees the problem of players trying to force the ball to Ronaldo, I do actually think it’s happening less now but it’s still an issue. Get us a half decent, aggressive, fit and mobile striker (they don’t even need to be that good) and we’ll be such a better all round team.

All these analyses, using split second images to show “right” and “wrong” options really boil my piss. If you play football you’ll know how hard it is to even spot one good pass, never mind instantly and correctly selecting and executing the best possible pass. Yes, these guys are so good you can expect them to get that sort of analysis right more often than not but obviously won’t do it every time. Chances are they don’t even see some of the passing options that Twitter experts thing they’re ignoring. It’s not physically possible to look in two directions at once.

True, Pog. This "analysis" blaming players passing final ball to a striker. If we had Lewandowski, those "failed passes" would most likely be goals.

8 of the 20 were due to Fred being Fred, abt 3 were Ronaldo directly. Another 3 were due to players trying to find Ronaldo instead of a better option.

Wasn't sure abt creating a thread but thought this shows how much of a difference Eriksen instead of Fred would have made.

That's a bit far fetched statement, unless next game a guy on twitter proves Eriksen sees and executes "the right pass" every single time.

I wouldn't read much into it. We had some good openings, not a lot of chances created. We need to do better. But we can't expect players to get it right every single time.

When you're putting Fred on the edge of the area and expecting him to make the right choice or have a good shot, the problem is you have the wrong type of player in that position

Very true. Who should have played instead of Fred then?

Who said anything abt every single time?

I am saying Eriksen would have made a massive difference. I feel confident in saying Eriksen would have done so much better in at least half of those situations Fred messed up. That's not really far fetched. If you think so, we'll have to agree to disagree.

Thing is, you've got to know when to hold and give but do it at the right time, and you can be slow or fast but you must get to the line. If you don't, the opposition always hit you and hurt you, defend and attack, but really there's only one way to beat them, get round the back.

This is pretty advanced stuff. Have you thought about coaching at a high level?

We still lack control and patience in our creativity, everything feels forced and rushed most of the time, I don't know what on earth is going on with our full backs as they don't lend themselves to attack like Chelsea, City and liverpool's do

Ronaldo is the wide pass, Sancho is through the middle who shouldve received it. Though yeah Ronaldo still fecked it up.

Ok ya. I can see it as better option. It could be that Sancho was so far on top of other CBs and Bruno thought he's offside, or he wanted element of surprise with Ronaldo on blind side? I don't know. But it's hardly surprising you go with a striker to finish off chance more.

He’s one of the better football accounts on Twitter. Always has smart analysis and doesn’t get carried away nor go too overboard with criticism. Need more like him.

He is definitely a good and balanced guy. Uses a lot of stats too. If I am not mistaken he uses the images because videos are harder to use with copyright and data limits. That's why he shows 4 images or so. Worth a follow imo.

Anyway his intention was to show how we generally played well and how much we got into threatening positions where our execution was lacking as opposed to him shitting on our players.

I’m sure he’s doing it all with good intent. I just think it’s incredibly misleading to portray the constant hustle and motion of a football match as a series of stills where good and bad decisions are made. I’m always amazed by how these top players have such a good picture in their heads of what’s going on around them. But to expect them to instantly spot two simultaneous runs, on either side of them, then consistently pick the perfect pass is asking a bit much. All while they’re trying to control the ball, dribble away from defenders etc
