Alphonso Davies

Think this idea that Trent is a terrible defender is ill founded at this point.

He’s not Cafu but he’s average defensively. Certainly not Marcos Alonso or something.
He's terrible as a defender, I don't see how anyone can watch him long term and think any different.

Going forward completely different player, obviously.

Genuinely, I think he's only a good passer of the ball, I think his all round game is shite and he's made to look better by other players around him and even with thr players he plays with, he still stands out as shite an awful lot

I'm getting pulled into this saga ffs

I think with Davies and Branthwaite, we'd have all the pieces to be able to build the best defense in the world. Or at least a top 3 in the world defense. Would be up to Amorim and his coaching staff to build it, but the pieces would be there.

Onana, Davies, Amass, Shaw, Malacia, Martínez, Branthwaite, Yoro, De Ligt, Maguire, Evans, Lindelöf, Mazraoui, Dalot.

That's outrageous depth and quality. I know not all of those CBs will be at the club next season with the expiring contract situations, but still

Ummm not sure if you’ve ever even watched Davies if you think he gives you the same assets as Kyle Walker. Both are very fast. That’s where the similarities end though.

Having watched them both a lot (I'm Canadian):

Similarities:
-Very fast
-Lack of concentration/positional mistakes happen more than the average top-level fullback, like a winger can sometimes get a few yards distance from them off the ball or their body stance is wrong

Differences:
-Walker is strong, Davies isn't
-Walker covers for his CBs, Davies doesn't
-Davies is a great dribbler for a fullback, Walker isn't
-Davies is average to above average in the final 3rd, Walker is bad

To get the best version of Davies I think he needs to play in a 'back 5'

I rather we went for Ait-Nouri who is doing fantastic at Wolves right now, is much better than Davies at Dribbling, technique, passing, and while not as crazy fast as Alphonso he is plenty fast enough.
He knows the league, and with Wolves not doing to well, hopefully we can try and get him out without paying an arm and a leg for him.

As for Davies, he has lightning quick pace, but without that what exactly does he excel at?
Dribbling, technique, crossing, passing, tackling, are all just above average to decent, it's his speed that is his main weapon.

Alvaro I fear is too slow, if he had more pace he'd be great as well.
Kerkez I see as more as a traditional LB than a wide player in an Amorim system.

Don't get me wrong I wouldn't be upset at getting Davies, but if the 200-250k a week rumours are true, I think Ait-Nouri would be a better deal for a potentially better player if given the chance in a top team.

Certainly flawed defensively but I wouldn't class him as terrible.

Shaw about to turn elite again.
Yeah would lay a bet on him being fit as long as we are looking decent, the second things look like they are dodgy he will be back on the physio table, ultimate fair weather player, Mourinho called him on it, don't like a manager calling out players but I also think Mourinho was genuine in what he said

Could also be that a fit Shaw is a reason that we look decent. When he is fit, he is a very good player after all.

Its a shame that he is, on average, only fit and good 50% of the time.

Martinez benched then?
Not necessarily - I think if we do go after Davies, then Shaw's role is to provide a rotation option among the back 3. It might not just be for injuries, it could also be tactical (e.g. Martinez coming in as the central CB that can step into the midfield and play a more active role in build-up).

Having said all that, I can't see Shaw being available all that often since he'll likely get injured again so he's more a nice option to have to step in rather than benching any established first-team player.
