As a new year comes to an end, I think its time to look back on the past and on the players who made United great! So people lets have your all time united elevens:

Heres Mine:

Schmeichel
Buchan
Irwin
Pallister
Bruce
Giggs
Best
Charlton
Keane
Cantona
Law

Subs:
Edwards
Van Nistelrooy

Ok so I'm a 90's child and some of these I never saw play! But what are your views?

We've done this so many times before, and every time it gets harder.

I'm not even going to attempt it! I mean, how can you leave out a player like Robson for example.

Diego Forlans Headband's team is also very unbalanced.

It's alright picking the best 11 players (which he hasn't anyway), but they would never work as a team. You could pick lesser players and the team would be better. Balance is the key, not a team full of superstars.

If u ask any United fan who saw Edwards, Best and Cantona play they wud say Edwards was the best player... so how u cud put him on the bench behind Pally and Bruce is scandolous...

IMO
3-4-1-2

Schmeichel
Irwin
Edwards
Pallister
Best
Charlton
Robson
Giggs
cantona
van Nistelrooj
Law

Shame that not many of the babes have been mentioned so far, but I suppose it's normal, as not many can remember them.

Pat and Bob, give us your opinion, you two know best. ;)

I would certainly include Tommy Taylor (to spearhead the attack with Law) and Roger Byrne. You cannot exclude Edwards from any all-time X1. Younger United fans should know more about the history of United by reading the many books and seeing the videos on these great players who helped make Manchester United a household name throughout the world.

I've read the books and watched the videos but there isnt much footage of Edwards around so it seems unfair to put him in ahead of players I have seen just because of his reputation.

Always tough picking out 11, and when I do I prefer to try and pick them as a team (rather than pick 8 strikers for example)

My current pick:

------- Hughes Cantona -------
----------- Charlton ---------
-- Best Robson Edwards Law ---
--- McGrath, Buchan, Stam ----
--------- Schmeichel ---------

Over time I'd hope Ruud would replace Hughes, and Rio take over from Stam, maybe even Beckham for Law.

Other honourable mentions for:
Coppell, Giggs, Pallister

:D

I'd put Keano ahead of Cantona and Robbo. Couldn't comment on Edwards and Carey, but agree the little I've seen of Best, Charlton and Law.

I believe you can only pick a team from the years when you were a regular watcher, which for me is 1983 onwards.

So post-83, my team is...

Schmike

Gary Nev
Irwin
McGrath
Stam

Whiteside
Keane
Robson
Giggs

Cantona
Ruudy

Oh, dont you worry your little head about his reputation, he was what everybody has written about him, the complete player. He would walk into ANY team on the planet. In actual fact I would throw the Babes up against ANY team you could pick.
Had they not been destroyed at Munich that team would have changed the whole face of football. Trust me they were that good.

Absolutely. There was something magical about that team which no other United side has quite acquired since, no matter what has been achieved. I think it was the fact that they were so young, certainly the youngest side to win the league up to that time and also because of their adventures into Europe, the first British side to be involved in the EC, which captured everyone's imagination including mine. Edwards was only 21 when he died, not only an established England international, a world class player in every respect, but also the best in many people's eyes at the time.

--------------Barthez--------------

G.Neville--Brown--Silvestre--O'Shea

Solskjaer--P.Neville-Veron--Giggs

---------Scholes------------------

------------------V.Nistelrooy-----

Stop living in the past. That's a "Quadruple" winning side right there. :D

Not going to offer a team, I think it is a silly debate, but one point that needs to be made is that Keano is the best allround and most influential player that this club has ever had, and if anybody has any doubts about this then take a look at the silverware he has led us to.

Agree with you Julian, and what about Tony Dunne? He reached the top 10 European Footballer Of The Year one year and in those days, for a fullback to get there, was amazing.

Tony was a great player, very quick, dependable and could play either RB or LB. Denis Irwin at his peak reminded me of him although I would rate Tony slightly ahead of Dennis, which says enough really. I think Roger Byrne was better than both so I would have Tony as an understudy to Roger in my X1.

I agree that Roy is influential but in terms of all round footballing ability I think he's a little down the list! He cant pass or shoot like Sir Bobby, dribble like Bestie, finish like Law or Ruud etc etc etc

Keano is a great player, no argument. And he has been a great part of our success but Cantona was the catalyst.

I go for Edwards as our best ever even though I never saw him. The support for him from older reds is rock solid. People of my generation who marvel at George Best get told so often, and in no uncertain terms, that Duncan Edwards was even better. I remember one book that I had in the early seventies. It had write ups about the best British players of all time in each position. Duncan Edwards, dead at 21, was described as the best ever left half, ahead of Bobby Moore and others. Can all those old timers be wrong? Do they all have rose tinted glasses because of Munich? I doubt it. I wish I had seen him.

I agree it keeps getting harder. I posted my team in about August. I had Law and Cantona up front. Now RVN comes into the reckonig.

And it's been said often that had it not been for Munich, Bobby Moore wouldn't have got a Cap.

A shout for Tony Dunne , the Denis of his day , and Harry Gregg was also a great g`keeper for babes .....can you have Law , best , charlton without Nobby and Crerand who made them tick ..and if Bruce is in what about Bill Foulkes ........an impossible job when most of us cant pick the best team from todays squad

I think you are missing my point, I said Keano was the best allround player, sure Charlton had a better shot- but could he tackle like Keano, could he go from box to box with such force and energy like Keano- no and the same applies to the other players you mentioned. Keano, while not having the individual ability of some of these greats but at the same time he doesn't have the weaker points that their game contained also- he basically has a bit of everything i.e. a more allroung game.

I would have had Byrne at left back and Dunne at right back. Roger Byrne used to go to my school, though a few years before me. They created a perpetual trophy in his honour when he died.
