What do you guys rate as Gareth Barrys best position? I preferred him in his younger Villa days as a classy CB/LB than his later years in midfield
To be fair, he established himself as a midfielder more so as a defender as he became more mature and experienced. You could go for either depending on what you want to do, though.

I think he became better as he became a centre midfielder.. started his career well as a left back. But certainly in his last few years and first couple at city he proved himself ato be a better midfielder

@Cal? picks Jamie Carragher

@Skizzo

Fowler is a top notch pick @MJJ, didn't think he'll work as well with Bergkamp as Owen which led us to pick the latter, but Fowler was superb at his prime. top pick.

@Kazi knew you'd take Ballack, no one seemed to care much but it is a GOAT pick at this stage. congrats.

A GOAT pick which cannot be judged anywhere near his peak unfortunately, was a shadow of himself at Chelsea. It depends how we compare a player of Ballacks scenario, vs a less glamorous Batty type who played their peak here and was 3 time PFA team of the year.

PFA Team of the Year appearance, PFA Young Player of the Year, and voted Australia's greatest ever player for fecks sake!

Great pace, goals and assists...and a sweet left peg.

Look I agree it's not his finest hour but he still produced some quality stuff, and he's a GOAT pick just like Desailly or Gullit are GOAT picks although they're not at their prime here. These players draw votes regardless of where their prime was, more than other players, and sadly that's the bottom line.

Anyway, I'm not sure I'd call Ballack a shadow of himself at Chelsea, because he was far from his peak but he wasn't all bad.

Desailly had a stellar PL career bang in the middle of his prime as a cb, so rather unfair to club him with the other two.

To be honest I was looking at ballack.. kaz needs to remember when ballack was at chelsea he was usually in 3.. could he have still done it in a 2??

Yeah you're right, I'm not really sure why for me Desailly will always be a Milan player more than a Chelsea one, even though he did spend about the same time at each club. I take it back regarding Desailly.

Which is why i made the comparison as a matter of example to Batty who made frequent appearances in the team of the year whereas Ballack made somewhat limited league appearances in the relative twilight of his career as shown below.

26 appearances @ 30yo
18 appearances @ 31yo
29 appearances @ 32yo
32 appearances @ 33yo

How good he was during his previous career shouldn't come into the equation unfortunately. Batty may not look as good to the scan voters, but under these restrictions in this draft imo he comes out favorably compared to Ballack.

Glad you got there before me :D

Good. You big jerk :angel:

Most of my options for that position played in a three. I thought Ballack was good for Chelsea, showed good energy.

Certainly did for Germany until his injury in 2010. I'd say it was more a case of Ballack actually being the most versatile and selfless midfielder and therefore the one who accepted the supporting role in the team more than a past his peak thing. If Gerrard or Lampard had been capable of doing the same in the nationalteam, England might have actually reached a semifinal or even more in a tournament.

Ok chaps so, my next two picks (so hard being 1st or last in these things as you have to wait bloody ages for your next pick).

Taken a bit of time to figure out which positions to focus on this time round but can't pass up these two...

Would be a fool to pass up the opportunity to link Shearer with his partner in crime at Newcastle. The year before Les Ferdinand had been voted PFA Player of the Year after 25 goals in 37 games. The following year Shearer joined and they were both unstoppable. 8th on the all time top Premier League scorers list...his 5 goals in 17 England appearances don't do this guy justice. Strong as an ox, clever, great in the air and a deadly finisher.

Next up and with left sided midfielders low on the ground....John Barnes. Pinnacle of his career may well have been prior to Premier League but his football brain, trickery, delivery of set pieces and finishing were still top notch. With the energy of Yaya alongside him to get the very best from him, he'll fit into my side very nicely indeed.

Ferdinand is a great pick up, was wondering when he'd go. Barnes was a centre-mid by the time the Premier League came about, no?

Liverpool used him either in the middle or on the left. Yes he didn't have the pace to burst past players in the PL years but was still used there.

Ferdinand is a great pick up, was wondering when he'd go. Barnes was a centre-mid by the time the Premier League came about, no?
Not exact a centre mid but certainly preferred drifting inside than tearing up the flank. He was vital in Liverpool's free flowing attack under Evans.

With so many strikers gone...and with so many teams still needing one. ..we'll take the Arsenal legend who broke Cliff Bastin's scoring record first...was their leading scorer for 6 consecutive seasons...a pure finisher
..and with a fantastic goals to minute ratio :p

@Cal?

I liked wright for the fact he knew his job was to score goals and he fecking loved it.. celebrated every goal like it was his last.

@MJJ @crappycraperson

I like team MJJ/Crappy, it seems like the best one for me, Skizzo's team look very strong defensively but I'm not sure yet how strong will it be offensive. Gio has a well all rounded team which I like, and berba's side looks also strong.
