Some considerable quality opening up here for the reinforcement stage presuming MBR doesn't make a late comeback.

Indeed. Brwned is probably pretty pleased he is almost nailed on to get either Puskas or Eusebio.

Still just over half an hour to go and only three votes in it.

The more I look into this the more both sides seem to have the right men for their sides.

MBR has the better attacking fullbacks, which would help double up on Dan's excellent defensive one... but for the threat from Dan's. Dan wins that overall I think, and rather comfortably.

MBR's midfield completely dominates Dan's though, but Dan has enough to keep that competitive and not having MBR just strolling through the middle at will. He won't create much there though.

I like Dan's CB pair better, but would rather MBRs to face Drogba and Dan's to face Puskas...

It's no wonder it is so difficult to separate them. Ultimately for me it was MBR having something that is very difficult to defend against and where his superior keeper would matter: long range shots from Koeman, Varela, Breitner, Puskas... He would probably nick one or two that way or from resulting spilt balls/crossbar rebounds.

Aye it's all very close and even when considering shooting from range as Gazza, Seedorf, Ronaldo, Ronaldinho and Drogba are all a threat.

Given control of the central midfield area to MBR, Dan's main threat is to exploit the counter with a fantastic pair of wide players. My only concern is that, whereas MBR has Koeman and Gerets probing from deep, Dan doesn't have a similarly visionary player in his back six to hit early long balls into feet.

Indeed, but that's one where the superior keeper should matter. The only long range feckup I can remember from Shilton was against us in 1990 (pre-tourno friendly at Wembley) and he was way past it then. I remember the headlines: "Stupid Shilton!"

I guess the media have always been the same ungrateful pricks...

That's a very good point actually, and had you made it earlier it may have swayed some borderline votes the other way. Who's providing the outball to the wingers?

Only just realised Dan had Vogts, not MBR, so I got it all wrong here. MBR has the better attacking fullbacks, but defensively Dan's are better and with neither winger tracking back much that helps no end.

So would you like to change your vote now? ;)

I think my back four edges it personally, and then they have Makelele to help them out, his sole role is to protect the back four.

You mention how my wingers won't track back but there is no need for them to do so. Is the reason why I picked 2 defensive minded fullbacks and Makelele to cover to allow the two Ronnies to concentrate on attacking

No, I was aware you had Vogts, just when I made that comment I got things mixed up in my head and thought I should put it straight.

I agree you are very solid, that's why the long shots tilted it for me as it was the one way I could see MBR breaking you down.

I think your fullbacks are ideal for your wingers, indeed. I'm not saying you will be in trouble because they won't track back but rather the opposite, that you have made sure they are free to do as they please.

Gio actually raised a very good point though. Too little too late for MBR, but one you probably want to consider. Beckenbauer instead of Makelele would be awesome, although you would need to find a new RB :annoyed:

Good match up there, could have gone either way.

That was going to be my question, when the next round of drafting takes place, will the nationality rule still apply?

Yeah well done dan. I'd say two of the better teams and a slightly different draw would have seen both go through.

As soon as the draw for the quarters is up the clock starts ticking on Stobzilla.

Yes, nationality rule stays all the way to the final.
