There might be some worth in all those numbers but this analytics style stat-ification of the sport does not fit an organic, free flowing sport like football as it does short form US sports where every possession or play is almost a separate event. Sometimes you just have to trust your eyes when watching a player.

Sanchez no longer has that spark in his game of his best years, is much more predictable and defenders fear him less. That cut back and chip through the middle from the left is not fooling many these days, they don't have to worry about him going on the outside of the full back, the RCB has not started to shuffle a few steps across worrying about Sanchez killing the RB one v one, the same with the DM, allows less space for others.
Gotta agree. Especially since advanced stats are new to football a lot of fans don't yet know how to avoid the correlation fallacies they are prone to. Other problems we see are people not knowing the relationship between volume and efficiency when comparing efficiency stats

Looks like ridiculous stat for me.

I'm guessing that's just in the league or something because Depay definitely scored more than just two goals for us (he scored twice on his debut FFS)

Well that's debatable at the moment....
That's true, although it's still like fans buying tickets to the star wars prequel's because of how great the older movies were. Also, it's not just about what happens on the pitch for your average match-going fans.

I was wondering, why don’t we play him on the right? Martial is on fire right now and Sanchez hasn’t been performing as expected. Would he really be that much worst on the right?

''The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he did not exist. And like that... he is gone.''

This almost applies to him.

The comments by United fans in here today are a joke. I hope he does turn it around to see what shower say then.

Looks to be dropped, which is justified. He was great in pre-season and didn't carry that on into the season.

He’s been awful and just before his signing it finally looked like we were turning a corner. Couple of decent assists and the highest wage in the league. Like Rooney- it’s undeniable at this stage that we are watching the end of a top player on a huge deal and we can’t do anything about it only suck it up. Like the majority of our signings has been poorly planned and researched how he’d fit into the team.

What's a progressive pass? They just making shit up now
That’s generally how analytics works. You analyse data and look for patterns, so you can define new metrics to explain performance. It’s explained here: https://www.sbnation.com/platform/a...ga-title-naby-keita?__twitter_impression=true

Even when Sanchez has been out of goalscoring form, his underlying play has been good in helping us build attacks. A big reason why we lost today is because we lacked players who could advance us down the pitch. We only really have Pogba and Sanchez who play forward, incisive passes consistently. None of our defenders, none of our forwards and none of our other midfielder really do that.

See, as I said in the "Are we a better team with Sanchez" thread, it makes no difference with or without him, we're a shit team because we're badly coached. Makes no difference what players are in the lineup.

It’s interesting that the ‘Verified Moaners’ are making sense. Agreed, again.

Yep. Anyone who thinks the alternatives to Sanchez are going to be the difference are fecking deluded.

Watch the BT analysis post game if you want an insight into what progression Sanchez can provide.

Firstly, he's a massive bellend, that we should have avoided taking.

But wild guess secondly, he is probably giving it to Lukaku in situations where Lukaku is supposed to continue the progression?

When he was playing with Giroud, a better footballer than RL, Alexis was scoring 30 goals in a season.

Those are the dots that I'm speculatively joining up anyway.

Could he have a go at centre back instead?

It worked dropping him didn't it, today went really well

Back in the team Tuesday then. Sorted.

We need to see what he's like under a more attacking manager before totally writing him off, as, Lukaku, Pogba, Martial etc don't especially look terrific most games.

On an individual basis, he's looked pretty sharp to me when he's had the ball, but like the CB area, the collective attacking unit is a shambles until they decide to start biffing it long to try & create some chances.

But he's selfish - lends the ball out to get the back when he can't do it himself or play the showboating killer ball. All or nothing.

It's not all AS's fault but there's hardly any linkages or teamplay ever going on is there?

I think Jose is messing about though - I think he's knows the game is up barring some miracle improvements out of nowhere. Manager is just writing the leaving narrative he would prefer for me. Decisions for show & what they look like & how they can be spun. Doesn't mean there isn't some truth to his side of the story but there's no solution to this now outside of the obvious.

It is an odd bit of behaviour to drop the signing the club absolutely shat their pants to beat City to, in favour of a player he's consistently had qualms over. To leave him out totally was a strangely over the top way of doing it.

To then blame the fans, in a "well, you tell me Sanchez is poor, I put your mate in and he's even worse" is just pure petulance

Yes, I agree. As a way of doing it, it's a complete nonsense. Ensuring Sanchez just isn't there to come on & show him up maybe.

I said somewhere a fair while ago. Jose doesn't like it now that no one likes him anymore. (which is the Cameiro incident for the UK media basically).
And that's why he goes into this acting all petulant mode.

Been like that for a while, too. And he just looks unhappy most of the rest of the time.

It's been said many times about how great Fergie was, but now we're seeing how truly great it was to stay at the top for so long, building so many teams, and staying relevant.
It does look like Jose's style belongs in the past - not as long ago as Van Gaal's was, but still outdated.
High pressing, lots of running, front foot fluid passing attacking is the way to do it now.

It's very worrying he still thinks having a tall un who can head it is a worthy tactic.
My boys Wycombe Wanderers do it with Bayo Akinfenwa, and it's fine at the lower levels, but for a Man Utd tactic?
